    I remember when 23andme transferred all our trees to MH, after which I could not update or edit my family tree any more, because I had more people in my tree than MH allows for a free account. I suspect the same will happen with our FTDNA trees.

    Frustrating that to do anything once you connect to MyHeritage, you have to have a monthly subscription.

    • @tomask1436
      @tomask1436 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      You don't need to pay the subscription if 250 persons limit is sufficient for you. The larger problem is when you pay for the subscription and this subscription ends, access to your family tree will be blocked for all your site members. You won't be able to do anything, you won't be able to read messages, you won't be able to access your MyHeritage DNA results etc.

      No you can use MH with their free subscription. They say 250 names max but I uploaded 15,000 names a couple of years ago. I have a warning message from MH to upgrade to a paid subscription but nothing has happened. I would delete the tree if I could figure out how, but pretty sure MH want to keep the data even though they don't say so.

    This 'collaboration' feels half-baked. A true corporate M&A would have been better.
    Genealogy research is best served when you have as many main components (tree, DNA, record indexing) as possible co-located under a single system that can inspect and cross-match them.
    MH should have acquired FTDNA, merging in the FTDNA DNA information and gaining additional FTDNA strengths (Y-DNA, mtDNA, DNA group projects) that Ancestry fails to offer.
    As is, it's just a jumbled half-step. FTDNA folks will now have to go to a 2nd place for one of their main components, the tree. And with no DNA sharing, the relevance of DNA matches to that tree is disconnected.

    Like many people who have accounts at multiple sites, I have DNA (transferred from Ancestry) and two trees on MyHeritage, and DNA (autosomal and mitochondrial) at FTDNA. Some of my matches at FTDNA have also tested on Ancestry and MyHeritage. I don't think I've ever built a tree on FTDNA. And, I don't want to lose access to my primary tree on MyHeritage, as my kin in Norway have trees there, and are not on Ancestry. So, it's unclear how I would benefit by linking the two sites, given that I still do the vast majority of my work on Ancestry, and don't expect that to change anytime soon. Maybe someone from MyHeritage can chime in and give their take on the collaboration...

    • @debbeb4499
      @debbeb4499 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      It may be that not many people bothered to build trees (or only created very small ones) on FTDNA. Like you, I never did-more work with possibly no yield since all of my FTDNA matches are fairly remote and I don’t have any idea who they are.
      It seems the advantage of linking is that it will allow FTDNA to see where you place your cousin match in your tree, enabling them to assign maternal/paternal designations to other matches in your FTDNA account based on that. Presumably, they have done this with trees already present on their own site but, as may be the case, many people may not have bothered putting a tree there. Hence, they decided they need people to have access to a tree elsewhere more likely to be used. Since MyHeritage has records available for research, it’s more likely people will build and maintain a tree there.
      And now, since FTDNA will soon not allow editing of your tree on their site (including linking a newly discovered cousin match to it, presumably), they will need access to your tree on MyHeritage to make their calculations.
      That’s my take, anyway.

      Essentially, it means you can use the better MyHeritage tree options to assist FTDNA matching. I have an account with both companies. Both my parents are also DNA tested and come up in my match lists. I have now linked MyHeritage and FTDNA and labelled my mother as my mother on FTDNA and labelled my father on FTDNA as well. So FTDNA can now identify which of my DNA matches are maternal and which is paternal. There may be other advantages, but that is a huge one for me already.

    I have DNA on both sites and trees on both sites. MyHeritage cost depends on the size of your tree. I very carefully keep mine just below 2500 and have premium account. I do not want to go over that number, as it would cost even more. It sounds as if I make this link - for all the account I manage on FTDNA it will add more trees, which means it will cost me more. Why should I bother to do this? I don't want to go over 2500. I can't see any advantage to do this.

    Thank you for asking so many detailed questions about this switch-over!! Katie tried to make sound like it is a good thing for us long-time users of FTDNA, but I still don't get it!! It doesn't do what I had hoped it would do, which is give us the capability of finding more matches through the MyHeritage tree - thus it doesn't give us the capability to not only have all the documentation to use along with the huge DNA database of Y-DNA & mtDNA results that FTDNA maintains. Keep up the good work, Connie!! Thank you for all you do to keep us informed!

  • @Lia_T
    @Lia_T 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    I have an FTDNA account that is new but wasn't able to create a tree there as it is already disabled for new users. I have a basic tree at myHeritage that I started a month ago. I don't want to have all the people that I have in my Ancestry trees. Just wanted to keep it simple in case I cancel my subscription there in the future. I use RootsMagic at home and use that to sync my Ancestry tree. And while myHeritage says it integrates with RootsMagic it is a manual process that is hopeless. My FTDNA account is linked to my tree at myHeritage. I'm not sure I understand the impact of this as I have DNA results from myHeritage as well...l will have to see how things work out I guess, and hopefully they'll do some kind of video tutorial in future - one that is easy to understand.
    Maybe because I am used to Ancestry I find the myHeritage tree clunky to use.

    • @Lia_T
      @Lia_T 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think it means that I'll still go to FTDNA to see my DNA matches from my kit there, which links to myHeritage tree to work out those matches, and then go to myHeritage for my matches using the myHeritage DNA test, so should be two pools of matches still. I am very much looking forward to FTDNA sorting out one login for several kits as that is what I need too. And they need to sort out the Home person better on the linked tree when you have more than one kit but only one myHeritage tree.

    I'm not sure why they wouldn't also allow linking the Y-DNA matches known and mtDNA matches known to the tree collaboration. Currently on ftDNA if you have taken those other tests, it would allow the link from the Y-DNA test result to your ftDNA tree. This would also help with sorting paternal vs maternal matches on FF. If you matched a closer relative on FF of a Y-DNA match, but not the Y-DNA match tester, (assuming they tested), then it could provide dna evidence of which side that closer relative FF match falls on. I always found it an annoying experience to build out the FF tree and link FF matches to the FF tree, so from that perspective this is a positive move.

    I really wanted to do this, but FamilyTreeDNA doesn't seem to want to connect with my MyHeritage tree. I've had this message for over a week "Your connection is in progress. This may take a few minutes to complete. Once connected, you will be able to select who you are in your tree and link your matches."

  • @pam.h4007
    @pam.h4007 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    This was extremely complicated. My take away is that I don't see the advantage of the MH tree unless I plan to do research there. I use MH for finding DNA matches and have a basic tree there so matches can see how we may be related. I prefer Ancestry for my research even though I'm not always happy with Ancestry DNA services.
    Personally, I'd rather keep my FTDNA tree live so I can easily link my matches. Right now, FTDNA allows you to link Y-DNA matches to your tree. What will happen to this functionality? Will the link go away once the tree is connected to MH since MH only does autosomal? Will we be able to link future Y-DNA matches after 9 Sep?
    MyHeritage has a clunky tree. When you look at a match's tree, sometimes it opens, sometimes you have to click around on the pedigree icon, etc. They limit how much of a person's tree you can see if you don't have a subscription.
    My other takeaway is that I had better update my FTDNA tree to the max right now because it will soon be frozen in time.
    It seems like this was a solution looking for a problem.

    So, I have several kits on FTDNA for which I’ve paid for the YDNA, Big Y, etc., as well as MtDNA kits. If Family Tree DNA is still the only place to obtain these matches, what happens when I can no longer access trees for my matches for Y and Mt? If new trees cannot be added to FTDNA, by me or my matches, and I cannot add to my trees, I’ve just wasted my money on all these kits. I also have a My Heritage account, and have no problem transferring my trees and linking my kits, but what happens to my YDNA and MtDNA research? I may get new matches but they won’t have a tree on FTDNA. And why would anyone pay to upgrade their FTDNA kits to Big Y, etc., if there is no possibility of finding their matches on another tree?

    I might have missed this, but will this affect law enforcement using FTDNA for IGG? MyHeritage prohibits law enforcement.

      It's only the tree being shared, not DNA data.

    Otherwise nice but the connection doesnt work for many people, just says connection in progress and it never connects. Maybe fix the bug before 9th september...

      I just did it during the video and it worked for me. I had to hit refresh on my screen on FTDNA to have it show the connection and then I could set my Home person for each kit.

    I gave up watching very quickly and can see in the comments I'm not the only one. There's nothing about this mish mash that will benefit me and there's no incentive to have anything other than the basic free accounts I already have.

    I talk fast, and I hate when people talk super slow. Like pulling teeth. Personally, I had no problem with her.

    it's almost a real shame that there's no option to share dna data as well. i guess it's not a big deal, since we've uploaded ours to both, but that can be an intimidating process to many.
