Great content. So helpful to have someone reviewing things nobody talks about in tennis! Any recommendation for which tennis shoe has a deep sole? I have to put orthotics and my heel rides high in some shoes.
Thanks! SoleCourt Boost is probably the best for an orthotic, yonex eclipsion 3 as well, nike gp turbo is pretty deep, KSwiss ultrashot has a pretty high ankle collar as well as does the asics court FF 2.
In the UK so a lot of these aren't available, but thanks for letting me know what to look for in a sock,. I've just started playing tennis again after 30+ years and finding it hard work on my feet; this explains a lot.
We need a video of what combination of shoes, socks, best practices to prevent blisters. My entire forefoot under the first joint gets wrecked. Engo patches help but not totally. Tx
Your analysis of the socks is excellent. On the Thorlo I would add that they have a special fabric that allows sweat to always circulate in a "waterproof" way, so that the sweat passes into the shoe and does not return to the foot. With normal cotton socks, this "hydrophilic" material absorbs hot sweat from the inside and projects it back onto the skin of the foot. That is why after a while of use. the foot appears white and the areas near the nails slightly inflamed. When you work on the tennis court and have to spend more than three hours a day running after a ball, you notice a lot the difference. With Thorlo, the feet are perfect, no matter the intensity or the duration of the sessions. Another very important aspect of Thorlo is that the Achilles heel area does not tighten, but lacks elastic. It is a rectangular area that is at the back of the sock, which is totally loose. Wearing non-professional socks (even from reputable brands), you find that the elastic shaft of the sock goes down your leg fully adjusted to the heel, causing severe pain in case of suffering some discomfort. When you have an achilles tendon injury, the slightest pressure can cause discomfort and difficulty moving. In Spain they are not very popular, but from the time when American tennis players stayed at my house when they played ITF Futures, I realized that they all had in common, that they wore those socks. Congratulations on the work you do in your channel! By the way, we have a very similar professional trajectory, I have been a tennis teacher, although now I practice another profession as a lawyer ... and yes ... I also fasten my shoes with a safety loop, there are many people who do not know the utility of the hole of the laces that is right in the area of above.
That’s interesting that they’re not as available in Spain - I often wonder what my life would be like if I would have gone all in with tennis after college instead of medicine- I’m sure you do as well from time to time
This is a great channel! Your reviews are much better than most the infomercial ones on here. I sweat a lot and only play outside in heavy humidity so I'm happy to get your suggestions for heat exchange socks. I've been wearing ankle socks and sometimes they're soaked when I'm finished playing. Also, I think my shoes were too tight before and were pushing down on the top of my foot. Could that cause calf pain? Seems like everything is connected.
Thanks for the kind words, I’m not sure tightness on the dorsal foot would cause calf pain but if you’re walking different because it’s too tight that may- also calf pain can be caused by many many differing factors so make sure you check out a good sports med doctor to put hands on it and see if something else is going on like tendinitis / myositis and yeah if you’re in humid conditions I’d always be wearing white crew socks
I don't know about other parts of the country or where the good doctor resides but the Thorlo socks, only socks I have worn for 20+ years, can be bought all day long for like 13.99 or 14.99 her in Atlanta. Or better yet, go online and order them directly from Thorlo. Awesome socks that will last years!
Thanks for the review! Don’t you think that having lots (60-80%) of cotton in the sock is not good? As I understand, cotton isn’t a good material to transport moisture. As you play cotton sock gets wet faster and you won’t get comfort and nice cushioning
For me I want a medium blend- too much poly will slick up the sock, too much cotton will soak - but there are medical considerations for different skin types as well- it’s a wide open question
Previously I had to wear two pair of socks to prevent blisters but a switch to a single ankle high compression sock (2XU) did the trick. I like them very much and have been contemplating going to the crew or full calf. I think I am going to try the brand you suggested instead.
Dr. Motion socks work great for me. Discovered at TJ Maxx. Great compression, stability, and tie nails haven’t worn through yet... going on 6 months playing 4-6 days a week. Tried & true.!,
Just played a week in the Thorlo socks. I play 4.0 Pickleball 4-5 hours, five to six days a week. These socks add just enough additional cushion for the bottom of my feet! Thanks.
I have tried all these socks and more and BY FAR the best tennis sock I have found, personally, is the ELSO Double Sock System. These socks check all the boxes - they are supportive, plush, durable, breathable, and moisture-wicking. If you have not checked them out you really need to. A truly innovative development, the Elso Double Impact Performance Socks are a patented, two sock system that diminishes the friction between the sole of the foot and the shoe with a unique layout, thus providing you with additional comfort and support during any physical activity.
Thanks for the great content! Can you expand upon compression socks? I suffer from heel / plantar now and then---especially if I play a lot on hard courts. Should I consider compression? THANK YOU
Compression will help, not cure, plantar fasciitis. Having orthotics in your shoes, getting shoes with good heel stability, playing some more on clay, and stretching the living daylights out of your fascia, Achilles is what will ultimately cure it - I appreciate the kind words!
I use the Nike cotton crew with 79% cotton and I do the double sock Federer style for extra comfort. I don’t like them in black or any other polyester sock simply because they get super slippery inside the shoes if your feet sweat. I actually can’t stand the Thorlos :)
I do the double sock sometimes when I’m playing a lot or if its really humid- Thorlo although popular is not a favorite of some players I know as well - different strokes for different folks! Thanks for the feedback!

@@FootDoctorZach I have a slight obsession with Bombas. Every pair I have of theirs is amazing, and the few issues ive had they replace the socks easy.

There are several- some people need them for excess swelling, they also help your calf muscles to stay fresh by increasing blood flow, some people get shin splints that they help with , they can also help with foot muscles staying fresh - some people love them some hate them
@@FootDoctorZach So youre saying that in general a compression stocking is beneficial to most but its a comfort issue. I used to be able to get Head Performance socks at Steinmart, they are every bit as good and thick as the Thorlo, but Steinmart went out of business....ughhhhh
2 pairs is nice for the air pocket- I switch back a forth but I love the cushion of the thorlos and sometimes I want more vacuum of 2 socks , sometimes I’m looking for more of a relaxed fit- different tools for different occasions
My biggest issue is that, after about 5 minutes of play, my socks are bunched at my ankles. Nike, Stance, Adidas, etc...I don't know what it is. Don't know if anyone else has that problem but if you've found a solution, let me know.
It’s probably the shape of your calf junction- id either try wearing two pairs of socks or getting a light compression sock like the vitalsox, the other issue could be your shoes are too big and your getting too much motion back and fourth sucking the sock down into the shoe- those are the only two issues I’ve seen that cause that
@@FootDoctorZach I'm waiting on some light compression socks from a company called Lasso gear so hopefully that'll work. But in the meanwhile I'll try the double sock thing. I have seen a few pros doing that. Would you recommend a thinner liner + regular sock or just 2 regular socks?

There are several- some people need them for excess swelling, they also help your calf muscles to stay fresh by increasing blood flow, some people get shin splints that they help with , they can also help with foot muscles staying fresh - some people love them some hate them
@@FootDoctorZach So youre saying that in general a compression stocking is beneficial to most but its a comfort issue. I am testing out the thorlos tennis sock. i love the padding but coming from wearing double sock (compression Nike Elite + regular running crew asics), my foot feels like is sliding around in the toebox. Thoughts?
The shoe may just be too big or wide, or the insole is too slick potentially
Are the thorlo maximum cushions the same thing as their level 3
I believe so - they were the same but I know they have some newer options now , but I believe they’re almost identical
I use Nike Strike, it's like the alphaskin in grip. I think it's for football/soccer... It's amazing anyways!
I’ll have to check them out for my sock review this year
@@FootDoctorZach Awesome! I know that this is off-topic. But have you tried the Nike GP Turbo Clay yet? If it's like Hard Court but different grip I'll buy them instantly haha! :D
They aren’t available in the states yet but if they are at some point I’ll be the first the try them - would love to try them
@@FootDoctorZach alright! I'm just gonna order them now before they're out of stock and try! I live in Sweden, I hope it's the same fit! 👌
I would assume they are- I may have to just pay the shipping and get a pair- was in Sweden last December before the pandemic- loved it, was in Jarpen, Ostersund, Stockholm, went to the Swedish Royal Tennis Club too- can’t wait to go back
Plantar fasciitis is here to stay. Was hoping good socks would help a little.
They rarely do much in my experience- it’s more the orthotic / shoe combo that gives the real benefit
@@FootDoctorZach ok i didn't know. Got to visit an ortho doc soon. Been using Thorlos for 6 months. It's really good.
Thanks!
👍👍
Can I help you with the audio? It's very up and down.
This video is from before I got my lav mic
I used to be able to get Head Performance socks at Steinmart, they are every bit as good and thick as the Thorlo, but Steinmart went out of business....ughhhhh
I didn’t know they went under
I find wearing 2 pairs of white socks are more comfortable than these expensive socks
Just 2 regular they create an additive vacuum effect
any site for heaven at XL?
Holabird.com
@@FootDoctorZach the solinco guys told me that there is no XL size only L. I wear 12,5US at Nike/Adidas. Should they fit me ?
I would think they’d be alittle tight - crazy they don’t make an xl - if it were me I’d still try it though
Shout out to BOMBAS which make socks exclusively for tennis in 4 sizes and they are AWESOME. COmfortable, wicking, cushioning, and all around 4.5/5 stars from me. Fairly expensive although you can get 20% off your first order. My second hidden gem and awesome cheaper socks with all the benefits are: PAIR OF THIEVES, these are super comfortable and a great tennis sock!
Trying out two Bombas styles right now actually as I’m putting together my best socks of the year video
@@FootDoctorZach awesome, check out pair of thieves next time as well
Thanks for some of your videos… I would ask you to edit your sound better… normalisation is needed when you use different cameras or sound recording devices please edit the total video sound to match levels… watching this and some of your videos is annoying when the volume levels change so dramatically….
