  • Burford is a medieval town on the River Windrush in the Cotswold hills in West Oxfordshire, England. It is often referred to widely as the gateway to the Cotswolds.
In this documentary, Robin takes us around Burford and provides a brief yet insightful history into some of the unique buildings dotted around the high street - from the church all the way to the Tolsey building.

Thank you for much for this, Robin Shuckburgh. I have only beautiful memories of Burford--my brothers and me went to Windrush Prep school in the Seventies; it was located beside the Roman Catholic church at the top of the hill, on the right. That school sadly no longer exists; it's owner and headmistress was a wonderful woman, MJK Milliken, a Dublin Presbyterian. What a kind, lovable and eccentric figure she was! I've not a single bad memory of my time there or Burford either. At the bottom of the hill, also on the right, on the river, was the surgery of Doctors Eager and Sharpley--great names. What lovely men they were, with their tin cars on tables in their rooms which as children we loved to play with. I can recall that a Tory grandee once visited the school and Ms Milliken wanted us all decked out in Tory rosettes. I wouldn't go along with it, even though I was a prefect--my Irish blood kicking in, no doubt. Ms Milliken didn''t press the issue, which was typically tolerant of her. I wish I knew what became of her, though. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

This video inspired me to visit Costwold. I totally enjoyed the visit to the English countryside. Hired a car and tasted the Oxford cheese, savoured the scotch eggs in the local butcher shop and sat on wrought iron chairs by those Yellowstone houses. You can start with a side trip to the Stonehedge or take a detour towards Bath.

Our first visit there was on a bus tour from London. We broke away from the tour group for lunch in a pub the opposite direction and had a wonderful 20 minute chat with the publican. We always remembered his interest and kindness, and returned again a few years later. So many Cotswolds villages are beautifully preserved. We have nothing like this in the U.S. Be sure to visit the church... actually any of the beautiful churches in the Cotswolds, or in North Yorkshire.

A lovely well presented film about one of my favourite places in the country. I actually rebuilt the upper 17' of the church spire back in the late 1980's, along with reguilding the weather vain. Fond memories.

The last time I was in Bruford, I went to have a squint at the Church. When I arrived, I thought I'd gone through a time warp, as the church grounds was filled with people dressed in clothing of the Cromwell period. Then I noticed a large van with a sign on the side saying, Film Catering, and realised I had stumbled across the making of a period film.

Burford is less than 10 miles from my hometown and I visit as often as I can. It's a lovely town, altho in Summer the traffic and parking are a nightmare. Best time to visit is first thing in the morning and try to avoid weekends if you can. Otherwise, it's well worth the trip.

Thanks Robin for another much appreciated video. I've been lucky enough to have stayed at both the Bay Tree and the Lamb hotels in Burford - I believe they had some kind of connection with the Priory in years gone by, providing accommodation to pilgrim travellers.

What a beautifully presented and facinating insight in to Burford. We stayed at the nearby Caravan Club site in 2016, but can now see how much we missed of the history of this lovely place. We plan to return as soon as possible, and explore Burford in much more detail. Thank you for such a well filmed and detailed view of Burford, it has wetted our appetite even more!

You must be a fan of the H.V. Morton series of books? Beautiful studies of the country between the last wars. 'In Search of England' is a classic and so to is 'I Saw Two Englands' written on the cusp of the country going to war.

Drove through here going to Clarkson's Farm last year, we spent 50 quid in Didley squad farm and nearly 200 pound in this little town, every fibre in my body tells me I shouldn't have stopped in this town and even give them £200 for the way they've treated Clarkson on expanding his business absolutely pathetic, thats Oxfordshire Council for you, whether or not you like Clarkson, it's diversifying is business from the farm,
