  • Keith Cooper's full review of the Epson ET-8500 EcoTank printer. The 8.5"/A4 six ink 'All-in-One' printer includes both pigment and dye based black inks which are filled from 70ml bottles of ink. Is this a good printer for learning about making better photo/art prints?
    The review looks at printer features and the different ways it can be used for printing. Both colour and black and white prints are shown including details about colour management and optimal paper selection for print quality.

    Bought this printer several months ago after seeing your review. I don't regret it one bit. Thank you for the detailed, extensive review. You don't really see TH-cam reviews that are as in depth, organized, and comprehensive as this. They're always 7 minutes, with 2 of those minutes being ads, tons of jumpcuts, and they fail to tell you that they company is sponsoring them. Kudos to this reviewer, I will be subscribing.

    I have watched several of your videos regards the 8500 and used these videos to print a number of photos on my new acquisition. I have been astounded by the picture quality on old photo paper that I have had for a long period of time.
    The set up for using the rear paper feed had me scratching my head for a time as directions were rather vague.
    Anyway I am really impressed , more so since the price in uk has dramatically fallen recently.😅😅

    The fact you said it's capable of high quality printing speaks volumes. Im doing a head alignment every day, just to get ink through the heads and stopping drying up etc (good idea???)
    It seems that Epson have really upped their game over their competitors at this price point.
    All in all a superb presentation Keith - many thanks.

      The one here comfortably sits unused for a week - I don't even fire up large format printers _every_ day ;-)
      Once a week is more than enough - remember that this is a consumer printer so designed more for intermittent use than bigger printers.

    Hi Keith,
    I received my new Epson ET-8500 a few days ago and I wanted to say a big thank you for your detailed and easy to understand talk through of setting this printer up. It's refreshing to have someone who is articulate and down to earth in their approach.
    I've looked at the Epson manuals and done a web search but am struggling to find any guidance on what options to use for "power" settings. Auto Power: On or Off (On was already ticked)
    Power Off Settings: Power Off If Inactive - Off, 30mins, 1hr, 2hr, etc. (Off was already ticked). Power Off If Disconnected: Off or On (Off was already ticked).
    I will be using the printer for printing some emails, pdfs, and some 4x6 photos too but this won't be every day - so what do you recommend I se the above items to?
    Hoping you can advise.
    Regards,

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks
      In general, pigment inks are needed to get the density. It does depend to some extent on the coating of the film though.
      If you want to use it for alternative process aa a negative, this makes a lot of difference. Always best to check on a specialist discussion group for that...

    Thx for the note about baryta papers. Epson Traditional photo Paper it’s not bad but I got roller marks. You can use the straight path feeder but it’s not worth it. I also agree that b&w prints better with an icc profile on most papers. With advanced b&w mode you get slightly better gradient but it’s not neutral. I’m curious to see how the new Ecotank you are testing will perform with b&w

      The three suppliers I use are
      Paper Spectrum, here in Leicester
      PermaJet and Fotospeed
      They will make profiles, but be careful with art papers if they suggest using the matte media setting rather than VFA - this needs deciding on a per paper basis [as described in the main written 8550 review]

      Some take custom sizes, but not borderless.

    I have a new problem with this printer. No matter which paper or options I use, the printer leaves pressure lines on the papers. Been trying to get this solved with the Epson support, but they just suck. I have found some forums saying that they have similar problems but only when printing on bigger papers, and that it has to do with the firmware update. Anyone else with that problem?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry to hear this - the firmware update should have no connection with this.
      If someone gave me a printer, the first thing I do would be to do a check that the printer has the latest [you can do this from the control panel]
      If I had the problem with every paper I'd demand a replacement or warranty fix

    Hiya Keith! I’m considering buying this printer as I print on 200-300gsm card and photo paper and my two previous printers both struggled to pull the media into the printer.
    Would the rear tray print on thicker photopaper up to 300gsm or is it only the straight through print path that could handle this? Also, as I print for a busy Etsy shop, would the rear tray (rather than the straight through)hold a number of sheets or can it only take one at a time? You’re currently the only person I trust to give me sound advice! Thank you x

      Thanks - Probably only if it's a properly coated paper.
      Non-inkjet papers generally print poorly on inkjet printers
      The edging might also cause difficulties for paper edge detection, but the lack of coating is usually the killer.

      Thanks - I'm afraid almost any mention of 'card stock' suggests potential disappointment - this printer [like most desktop inkjets] only works well with card meant for inkjet use, which is rarely called 'card stock' and never measured in points - that's generally for commercial print use [units only used in the US IIRC]

      Sorry, but I cannot answer this...
      "Which printer" is essentially the wrong question to start with
      On it's own, it means nothing I'm afraid, without a _lot_ of additional info
      I have a whole play list connected to the business side of photography, many videos devoted to the 'I want to sell prints' question...

    I’m watching this video before actually buying this printer. I the Choosing Paper section you discuss the importance of using the correct paper, but you didn’t discuss how to choose! Do I just print on a trial and error basis with different papers to see what works? Do you have another video that explains how to choose?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      At the level here it's more about types of paper since I'm assuming an international audience [I'm in the UK]
      The best places to start are the main [written] 8550 AND 8500 reviews where I list all the papers tried [it also links all related videos]

      and
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8500-printer-review/
      The two printers are essentially the same - the 8550 review has more about how the inkset relates to paper choices.

    Would it be due to its setup on WiFi only due to its placement in the room? Don’t have an Ethernet cable but do have 5m usb which may just reach.
    Final point to produce prints I currently only use apple Photos will this be too basic, to access driver features will I need something like lightroom

    I'm getting back into selling my watercolors after a decade, but I want to sell prints rather than the original paintings this time. Based on other videos you've done, pigment inks are better for archival/longevity purposes. I will not exceed letter size for now, but I will definitely paint/print larger later. I want to do borderless if possible, and print on luster finish (maybe glossy) paper. Can I buy pigment ink for the 8550 and not use the hybrid system? Or is there a better pigment printer out there? Thank you so much for your videos! You've given me an arsenal of information to start this artistic adventure!

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you get pigment inks for the 8550, you will need all new icc profiles - that and say goodbye to any warranty
      Then there is the issue of the look of pigments on gloss - sometimes disappoints with gloss differential
      Watercolours often print far better on cotton rag papers - borderless can also be problematic. No simple answers ;-)

      Thanks
      Label printing is not an area I have much experience of - the real problem is finding a media which works well in the printer - and is sufficiently robust.
      The printer is a good one, but such media varies so much the only way is to try it.
      For example, a printer with all pigment inks might be better or it might not.
      This is one where you need to find someone who actually makes such labels.

    Mr. Cooper - I've got 60lb. Red River Polar Matte (double sided, Item no. 1941) - Am I okay with this printer with that paper? Edit: I hope so as I just ordered the printer. 😉
    I used to print exclusively with that paper and an Epson 1280. I was all in on the hobby, but I gave it up as the time required started wear on me: profiles, calibration, errant prints, expensive inks and clogs, etc, etc. Now my kids grown and I'm retired and can devote some more time to it. Also, I hope, that the clogs and expensive inks problem is solved now. I don't use Photoshop any longer. I use Apple Photos on all of my devices and Procreate on my iPad. That's it, so I hope that those programs will play well with the printer and offer me enough in the way of configuring my prints to my liking. I will want to print postcards, folded cards, an occasional contact sheet and the occasional panorama. I won't print large so the 8500 should suit me fine.

      To your amended info...
      Accurate colour is simply not possible on an iPad - there is no facility for using profiles.
      Apple Photos also leaves a lot to be desired in some aspects of print.
      I'd suggest getting a copy of Epson Print Layout to print from.
      See the profiles I created and other info in the two main [written] reviews [the printers are essentially the same]. I have profiles which would likely work with that paper.
