Keeping a tiny red led button battery light saves your night vision.

Outdated. You can get a regular red flashlight or a multi mode one with additional red light. No one uses button cells anymore.

From someone who rode for years:
-Arizona tea jugs are among THE ABSOLUTE WORST containers to carry water in! They are NOT BPA-free, and the handle can be VERY uncomfortable to grip. It is positioned at a VERY uncomfortable angle to be carrying for any length of time. Lastly, this rigid type of plastic gets VERY brittle from sun exposure and will split and shatter if bumped or dropped! The last thing you want on a hop is to lose your water after hiking to the hopout, or after tossing your gear onto or off of a train, or any time at all for that matter. Don't be lazy, and go find yourself a BPA-free jug that is NOT rigid. Many grocery stores and pharmacies carry BPA-free gallons. They may cost more, but you have WAY less of a risk losing your precious water in the desert. The best option would be to find single-wall stainless steel canteens with a wide mouth. They don't insulate, but they are way tougher than plastic. They will last many reuses without affecting water taste. You can boil water in them if you want to either cook or just boil drinking water. They are way lighter weight than double-walled insulated canteens.
-take a small daypack rather than a fannypack. Even a standard bookbag if you're into blending in with society when you get to town. Basic JanSport and L.L. Bean packs should be tough enough and come in darker colors. If the weather and your body temperature are hot enough to NOT carry a sleeping bag, you're not going to want to hike around with an insulated jacket around your waste lol That's so irritating just thinking about. The jacket around the waste will definitely act as a butt flap, though, in order to protect the seat of your pants from tears and chemicals, etc. Ideally, I would say the best all-around bugout pack would be the Dragon Egg, made by Direct Action. It IS a tactical style pack, but I believe you can get it in solid black if you are avoiding the camo colors in order to blend in when the sun's up.It isn't that typical square, blocky, inefficient, non-durable design that most tac companies butcher.
-Back to the water jug thing... You can ground score some tow strap or ratchet strap webbing... Get a pack of good tough sewing needles and waxed dental floss... Use the floss as thread and stitch yourself up a water jug carrier. They will last forever and save you from having water jug handle failures. Also, while riding a suicide bucket or underneith a piggyback, you can hang/suspend the jug by the carrier and prevent the jug from wearing through due to vibrations and sliding around, etc., or even from sliding/rolling off the train.

Makesure the knife has a can opener on it, spoon isn't really needed you can just use your hands, Don't carry any bills larger than a $50 since a lot of places refuse large bills especially late at night.
A battery booster for your phone is helpful, since you might be stuck away from a charger for a long time n that could be your only way to get help
If you do have a pack, a tarp in it is going to be a life saver if you're stuck riding a train for hours in the rain and wind

Yo, pretty decent set up. I always used a tactical vest for all my extras. I rode from '98 till '08. Pretty steadily jungled up. No phones.... Ha ha. I had a scanner with all road frequencies programmed. Been thinking of taking a trip this summer. Probably Portland to Cheyenne or Roseville. Those lines still easy rides? Anyone know?

oHAWKWINDo Portland to roseville should be good keep ur head down in K falls. Also idk if youve heard the horror stories of officer Flood in rose but he sucks. But once you get outta there it's too easy. I would say avoid rose all together and hop east outta portola via the feather river route. It rejoins the sunset in winnemucca NV.

Have some small bills on you. If you get robbed you will want to be able to hand over a small amount of money and also you can't always break or pay with a 100 dollar bill, such as if you need a drink or small purchase.

Not sure what kind that one is but I would highly recommend a Petzl Tikka XP. All though it starts off on the high setting and takes 3 aaa batteries, it does last a long time and able to last many nights. Also has different color lenses for night time! Another amazing flashlight is a Nebo Redline, small compact and has a powerful light. Plus the adjustable focus from spot light to flood light and magnetic base is nice. And it fits in your palm!
