To be fair, the Lancer Evolution was a Group A car for many years. The first year of the WRC specification car in competition was 1997, and while the cars were fast most of them were equally unreliable. The Group A specification was a less competitive package in comparison but it was a lot more reliable, they were always there to pick up the pieces. I am not taking anything away from Mr Makinen’s driving ability, but look at the entire season and look at how many times the WRC Impreza had to retire. The Ford Escort WRC lacked a bit of pace in comparison but it was still quite rapid on most surfaces. I think it was 2001 when the Lancer Evolution was finally built to the full WRC specifications, it was grossly uncompetitive and even worse it was plagued with dreadful reliability issues; the same teething problems other manufacturers had to spend time ironing out in the infancy stages of their program. That’s another year of competition you can review to see for yourself. Despite its history, the Lancer delivered fantastic memories in the hands of a number of drivers. There was some magic to its performances, but, it was the sort of magic you could quantify. All the same, this collect of footage was decent viewing.
