- Listen to the incredible sound of the Avro Lancaster with it's four Merlin engines as it starts up, takes off and lands at RAF Coningsby, home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Also featured is a Supermarine Spitfire.
The planes of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight have been preserved since World War II. The Lancaster, known as 'Leader' and registered as PA474, was built just after victory had been declared in Europe in 1945 and never actually saw action before deployment. The Spitfire, AB910, on the other-hand saw multiple battles and shot down a Dornier Do 217 in 1942.
The planes are intended to pay tribute to the fallen and preserve the history of the conflict for future generations to learn from. They belong to the Royal Air Force. Read more: www.raf.mod.uk...

My Uncle Billy from Oregon flew these for the RAF at the age of 19/20 yrs. He was one nice man and a big influence on me growing up. He passed away at age 71 after retiring to Mexico. Miss you Billy, you were a real man.
I live in London and I thank your uncle Billy for helping the RAF in there hour of need. We will help the USA in all they do. Peace to one and all.
I've only heard a Spitfire in flight one time, and its sound was unique. The Mustang, although it used the Packard built Merlin engine, for some reason or other, sounded different. The British Merlin had more of a rumble while the Mustang's had that steady whine.
That fact this big old bird is still flying is a testament
to the skill, dedication and love of the crew that cherish her!
Absolutely. The Lancaster remains in service with the Royal Air Force's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and therefore has a home and a lot of love at an active and very busy RAF base.
Something about the Lancaster and spitfire that gives me goosebumps, love those planes.
I have the Lanc and Spitfire tattoo's on me. Going to see the Canadian Lanc fly this June. Fr Hamilton to Goderich. Cheers from Canada.
My uncle was a pilot who went down in a Lancaster above France in the summer of 1944. He was 21. The other crew members bailed out and returned to England in various ways. I remember seeing him once when I was 3. I'm 83 now. How sad.
My condolences to you and your family. Such a young age, too, 21. So much life ahead of him. Thank you for sharing your story.
I'm so lucky to live 3/4 of mile away from 1 of the only 2 flying lancasters left. and it fly's every week around Hamilton... gives me goosebumps every tie I hear those 4 rolls royce merlin's...
Condolences to you and your family to have a relative at a young age to sacrifice their life so that we can have the freedom that we have today. To The Aircrews Of Bomber Command who never came back, Rest In Peace
@@CobraEmergency My condolences go to all civilians, families, children and old people killed worldwide by bomberpilots. And to those who survived the pure horror of firestorms, no matter if in Coventry, Hiroshima or Dresden.
as a Dutchman it's not so common to see one of these legends in person... let alone see it fly. i've had the privilege to see this beauty in flight 9 times so far and it never gets old. chill and goosebumps everytime those 4 Merlins thunder overhead. amazing!
Seeing these beauties still flying is a testament to all those Bomber Command pilots and aircrews that did not return, leaving do many children fatherless, my brother-in-law had lost his Dad in a raid in 1943.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight serves as an extremely important tribute to those many we lost and educates many younger generations about what happened, and the importance of it all. I am so sorry for your brother-in-law!
My Dad (RIP) served in the RAF during the 2nd world war and copiloted a Lanc on many bombing missions.
He told many stories of seeing the gunners blown apart and landing on less than 3 gear
Heroic young men back then …
harry the Lancaster did NOT have a co pilot !!!! !
they did have cross-training though and Harry's Dad was likely cross-trained as a pilot :D @@wilburfinnigan2142
Flight engineer dose he mean?
Be very proud of him. I'm so proud of all those who protected us in WW2 on land, sea & air. They all are true heroes.
Can you imagine the kids today who are going around stabbing innocent people having to do the jobs that these pilots and air crew had to do to protect our freedom!!!
Isn't she a beauty, the growling of power from those engines too, for those of us who have been close to one to see a take off and landing that we will never forget. My family and I saw one at Southampton many years ago, fantastic.
There is not sound like four RR Merlin engines. It is the sound of British pride. Not many alive today will have experienced the sound of 20 Lancs taking off one after another, but those that did must have been awestruck. And to think many of the crews were in thier early 20's. Love and respect to them all. 🙏
CHEERS 1
@@FredCsizmadia Yep! Those Merlins purred. Powered the Spit and the Lanc.
@@marekadamczyk8251 And Mossie Hurricane and a few others
dad flew them 32 missions 43 - 45, flt engineer. Thanks dad thanks mr Chadwick. Viva peace.
these engines have the most beautiful sound in the world
We have a Lanc here in Ontario and you just know the sound when it flies over. Beautiful
I live down the street from the War Plane Museum, and have the pleasure of hearing VR-A rumble overhead frequently.
This must be the same one that has periodically come out west to Calgary, and always makes a pass over the town of Nanton. It has definitely shaken my windows on a few occasions.
You don't realize how big this this is until you see it up close I saw one at the war memorial in Canberra its big ! my father (RIP) was a tail gunner thanks for your service lads !
Whoever is responsible for maintaining these , my hat goes off to them . Its just amazing that it still flies.
Routine maintenance is done in house, major jobs are farmed out to companies like ARCo
I was wondering if its reconditioned
My Brother was at RAF Coningsby maintaining City Of Lincoln.till he retired, he now works at East Kirby getting NX611 Just Jane into airworthy condition it's a 10 year renovation job.
My Uncle was on the front lines in WW2, my Dad, who is about 13 years younger and a big plane freak, wanted to go the a Lancaster a couple years ago when there was one in towm, so he asked his brother if he wanted to go with him, he said "No, I saw enough Lancasters in the war and I really don't want to see one again." Fair statement from a veteran, personally, though I was in awe of this beast.
I can understand that! Some veterans get nostalgic, others don't want anything to do with them, and I can see why. Not a nice time! At least future generations can learn from seeing these old machines. I certainly find them awe-inspiring.
Sat in pilot's seat in one, at Castle Bromwich airfield ( now Castle Vale estate) in Birmingham, in the 50s. Amazing experience.
Spitfire and Lancaster birds. Beautiful.
Now thats a powerful sound in so many ways 🇬🇧
cant beat the mighty sound of merlin engines tbf
Scared the Nazis
@harryt988 this plane is my favourite ww2 bomber ever made absolutely beautiful and absolutely terrorising to Germany
Lucky enough to have seen this remaining Lancaster fly in person...Amazing Aircraft...
It's hard to explain just how incredible it is in person. Definitely something I'd recommend to anyone if given the chance.
There is nothing that beats that lovely sound awesome sound and plane 👍👍
all engines will be the swish sounding merlin ones
the next one in the family
took noise to a completely different level
oh that Vulcan
HOOOWLLL 🤩🥰🤗❤
@michel9999 I am glad you are here to tell us the story.
The greatest plane the British ever made. A majestic aircraft.
I lived on the South Coast and seeing Spitfires, Hurricanes, was almost common there.
One afternoon there was a similar sound but much bigger. I rushed into the garden and in the sky were two Lancasters!
I remember thinking 'Take this in. You will never see it again'.
I had the one in Hamilton, Canada fly over me once. I couldn’t believe how loud it was. An incredible thing to see and hear and FEEL
My dad would be 96 now sadly passed away a couple of years ago said one off the best moments he ever had was in 1944 in Lincoln when he saw all these Lancasters taking off from all the Lincolnshire air bases and meeting up with each other on there way to Germany he said the sky was full off them that moment stayed with him for ever he joined the Raf himself in 1945 just short off the war ending rip dad
Really amazing. I can't imagine what it takes to keep this big aircraft airworthy.
had the chance to hear this beautiful bird fly at bray, amazing sound, like angels on earth
There is a Lancaster bomber 24 km up the road from me with all engines operating. I have touched it and seen all its engines working
We had those in Argentina. Wonderful planes. I love the sound of its engines.
It was a Spitfire PR MkXI that mapped Argentina post war which had flown all the way from England
hi, what a wonderful plane, Guy Gibson would be so proud of this so would the dog.i am sure he is looking down, well done to the maintenance team,
I am very lucky that I live in the Lincolnshire area and see are city of Lincoln she is a very beautiful aircraft l have been in just Jane for a taxy run and boy does the sound of those Merlin engines sound amazing can’t wait to see just Jane take to the skies and meet up with city of Lincoln 😊
There is a Canadian-built Lancaster bomber in Nanton, Alberta, which has been restored to the point where its engines can be started up. It is truly a phenomenal experience when they're revved to full throttle. The association which restored it wants to make it flyable again, which is a bit of a problem as Nanton doesn't have an air field.
what a beuty ! i probably saw that magnificent beast over golcar huddersfield once and its why im into aviation a tad now and im planning to get a model to be pride of place in the aviation fleet among the avro vulcan
That’s what this country stands for
Saw this beauty fly over Swansea bay today. Awesome plane.
Got to see the Lancaster fly yesterday. Looked and sounded amazing
Hi Guys, brilliant, i had the best experience ten years ago when this Lancaster took off from Lydd airport for the Folkestone air show, it banked left over castle water and the sound from 4 merlin engines was amazing will never forget the sound , i jumped for joy as i was on the lake myself, and waved to the air crew, I so wish i had my time then took my chances & done my bit , done 20 years + with the military, dont know about the guys now , dont think they have it in them ?? i am 60 now , brilliant memories, brilliant, brilliant brilliant, memories keep us going and strong x
Now that is a proper aeroplane - great capture and upload!!
the only sound that beats this is 2 lancasters flying together I was lucky enough to be able to see the canadian lancaster fly alongside this one about 10 years ago at Duxford. A sound I shall never forget. Another unforgetable experience was walking underneath the bomb bay of this old legend.
Ditto. I've also been able to get inside Nx611 for a tour. Absolutely my dream come true.
Please add a capital C to Canadian in your sentence. Canadian Lancaster? Remember we are thinking about the fallen soldiers.
Amazing design, it's great to see that piece of WW2, that airplane was such an important part of the war.
My Grandfather was an engineer on the Lank He flew all but one mission when part of his heel was shot off by AA. His crew left wit out him and didn't make it back. He re upped and did another tour.He came back home.
My mum worked at Avro, Yeadon building the Lancaster. She would rivet the outer skins on to the fuselage. Her partner, Nelly was on the inside of the plane holding a 'dolly' and checking that the rivet had gone in properly and if it was wrong she would knock it back out. They worked high up on scaffolding. Mum said it was the best job she ever had and the money was good. The hangers where they were built had a flat roof which was painted green to look like a field from the air and they made paper mache cows and moved them around every so often in case the Germans flew over.
Quel Bel avion.... savoir que le monde doit sa libération à des milliers de ces avions, respect.
4 Merlins in close formation, what a glorious sound, when I was kid we lived a couple of miles from RAF Stanmore and the BBMF used to come directly over our house at least once a year
The Merlin engine on it's own is a symphony.
Agreed, I miss it!
I was lucky enough to have a day out in lincolnshire and visited Just Jane a Lancaster at the local museum and had a taxi run and the opportunity to sit in the cockpit and the rear gun position. I had to clamber over the internal superstructure to gain access to rear bubble and then shoehorn myself into the seat and close the blast doors behind me. An emotional moment for me and one I will never forget. The ever so brave crews what they gave to protect us. I could only imagine combat conditions freezing cold, deafening noise, vibrations, and the fact your parachute was the other side of the doors in an emergency. So so brave god bless all who gave everything for us.
I had the honour and privilege of going up in the one that flies in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. My father flew these at the end of WWII. You have no idea how loud it is inside until you fly in it. Incredible experience!!
What an experience! I hear they are quite cramped inside aha. It would be great to see the two Lancasters flying together again. They're working on restoring a third one to flying condition, in Lincolnshire, UK.
Thank you to your father for his service!
Nothing so evocative as four Merlins going flat chat!. Bril job to the teams keeping this iconic aircraft flying keeping the memories of those who flew them alive. Lest we forget. Nuff said.
Thanks!
This is really appreciated, thank you so much. 😊
An AR unit code? That's got to be 460 Royal Australian Air Force markings. Their home was Binbrook. The Aussies flew and died from there. Bless 'em all.
I saw a flying Lancaster bomber really up close today it was so fun
One of the most beautiful engine sounds in aviation.
1920s: piston engine
1950s: radial engine
1980s: turboprop engine
21st century: jet engine and E-jet engine
My grandad flew them in the war brings tears in my eyes so proud of him and flying while being shot at
The spitfire and Lancaster were married to the merlin engine perfect combination both aircraft look so graceful in the air thrills me to bits seeing them flying still
This is history. God bless you always. God bless. All. The people in world. War. 2. Thanksyou so much so this plane. In Blackpool. Some years ago loved it lovely 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️✈️😍
That was absolutely amazing footage. One interesting thing was when the massive landing gear came down. Thank you for sharing.
My nans uncle Stanley Ireland was the pilot of the original L Leader Lancaster bomber he flew for the raaf in 460 squadron. He was shot down over the Netherlands only one crew member was able to bail and was a pow from the remainder of the war. It was nice to see the paint replicated on this beautiful machine.
I remember 7 years ago when I was at East kirkby when just Jane started up all her Merlin engines what a great sound it was.
There is something romantic about the sound of those piston engines lifting the aircraft into the sky. A lot more appealing than the sound of jet engines. 😍
They call the Boeing 747 the Queen of the Skies, but I reckon before the 747 was even an idea, the Lancaster would possibly have had that famous nickname.
cpr NOPE !!!!
Fabulous! The most beautiful planes ever. And what a sound!
Must be the best Lancaster video...amazing how quickly the ail lifted off, to gain control.
That's very kind of you, thank you! I really enjoyed seeing the Lancaster fly that week.
Wonderful. Flew over my house in Stockport yesterday.
My old man god rest him worked on the spitfires during ww2 I was helping him in the garden one day when he heard an aeroplane in the distance and before we even saw it he could tell by the sound of the rr Merlin engine it was a spitfire.he never forget the sound that amazing engine made.miss you old man.❤️🛩️♥️🇬🇧
Years ago I wanted to write to Jim”ll Fix It to experience a flight in a Lancaster Bomber but unfortunately it never materialised. I can only dream 😢
A Lancaster flies over my house most weekends from May to October. You hear the four Merlins long before you see the majestic airplane. Love to get a ride in it but I understand there are no places left this summer.
It's amazing how slowly the propellers go round.
Beautiful!!!
my grandfather was a pilot in the Korean and WW2 war, he worked with lots of brave men, also he probably saw lots of bomber in his missions
Aw and then she gets tucked away again. What an amazing aircraft.
what a beautiful aircraft after 80 years of flying.
It really is. And they look after it!
What a beauty, still formidable and fierce. Total respect. Katrina.
The unforgettable sound of our
Freedom.
i live near an old Avro factory in Chadderton where they built Lancasters, and i think there was another just down the road in Failsworth,
Wow! ❤🇬🇧
I have always loved the Spitfire and the Lancaster!!
Both amazing and beautiful machines that have endured the many years since WW2!!
I almost forgot how huge the Avro Lancaster is!!
I try to imagine seeing hundreds of them up in the sky heading out towards a bombing mission and trying to think what those brave and courageous young men were thinking about...
I know that the RAF bombed strictly at night...because of the huge losses from daylight bombing..
But I also know that nighttime bombing wasn't as good as daylight...
Both times were tough and losses were high and in my opinion unacceptable..
I know that the Allies had to win the Air War.. it was something that had to be done!
But I always stop and think about what those young men who died during the bombing raids...daylight or nighttime would have done with their lives? What would they have came up with to help humanity or the world??
Sadly we will never ever know!!!
Buitifull amazing ❤❤❤
This was and still is the Queen of the sky ✈️
This thing has 2 spitfires on each wing....brutal.
God, imagine a sky full of a THOUSAND of those. terrifying.
Just AWESOME
Oddly, instead of sounding like four Spitfires on takeoff, the Lanc sounds like four Mustangs!
That's actually possible. The Mustang used Merlin engines that were manufactured by Packard, and their quality was such that they could be interchanged with those made by Rolls-Royce. As for the different sound, I think you're on to something. I've only seen a Spitfire in flght once, but have seen Mustangs a couple of times. They do sound different. The Spitfire had more of a rumble to it while the Mustang had more of a whine.
Super Document , ça fait rêver ...Merci ...Paix aux disparus pour nous avoir offert la LIBERTE ...
Fantastic 👌🏼
Such a beautiful piece of music
I'm from Newark upon Trent
so.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great video of the Lancaster. Can you change your frame rate? The props look like they are either not turning, or they are herky jerky. You should only be able to see the yellow blade tips as circles when they turn.
The Lancaster Flew Over My House Around 10 Year Ago On Route To The Sunderland Air Show - However I missed The Photo Opportunity #GUTTED.
great video....thanks
you can never beat the great sound of the 4 marine engines
The four engines of the Lancaster is a great sound. Iconic really.
Great vid, This plane played a MASSIVE part in saving England from nasty A H and mob,Respect to all who had to do the nasty job,Im real glad they got a decent shed to keep it dry and warm, you wont get a shed like that in B and Q,they only sell rubbish sheds,my mate got one i did tell him...he is cloth ears.
Your channel is good
Glad you think so!
I would love to go for a ride in that lovely sounding old beast.xx
Oh, can you imagine? The sound and the sights. Quite cramped inside!
A huge and frightening bird with a grim face of vengeance and death. Let's appreciate these surviving machines but remember they are relics of dark days indeed.
See the 'Roo below the cockpit. Good stuff.
thankyou
Flew over Blackpool
Has been busy in the North West!
Saw it in the same land
