Amazing service at your Suzuki dealer. Here in Canada, even a BMW dealer wouldn't treat you that well. And the cost of your repair is surprisingly very reasonable!

OMG I love japan Yes Japan is not Utopia, but they do many more things right than many western countries.
I'm glad you are ok. The car was fixed and looked flawless. Made me wonder if I ever should rent a car in Japan. Both of my visits I used public transportation and very expensive taxi. Just that in America we drive the opposite side didn't make me confident about driving.

In Melbourne 95% that you never find the person who hit your car , happened to me twice in car park when I do shopping . Japanese are honest and did a right thing , the lady at the dealer so polite , hat off to her the way she run to the street and watching traffic for you to get out .
I am from Texas and Im alwasy amazed by the honesty of the Japanese population. I had a "hit and run" when a truck reversed into my car and left. no note was left and the apt complex said they could not pull any video footage (this was over 15 years ago). For the Japanese police AND the family member to call you is amazing. Very honest and wonderful how they all took care of you.
The most amazing thing to me is that the drivers insurance company rang you and said they'd cover the repairs, most places now they'd force you to make use of that legal assistance to actually get that payout.
That’s so unfortunate, hopefully turns out okay! Also, thank you for uploading your experience to TH-cam, I’m sure it will help so many people in the future!
I so love that you told the police station: I met you in prison. Such a nice laugh when I really needed one. Glad your repair went well and no one was hurt.
This happened to our car in Japan too. It was parked in a lot when someone hit it, but we didn’t notice until after driving home. A few hours later, I saw the bumper hanging and scratched while in the garage. Thankfully, our dashcam recorded everything. It stays on after parking, and I found footage of someone backing into the car and driving off-a clear hit-and-run. We reported it to the police and they tracked down the driver, arranging for us to meet at the same parking lot. The driver initially claimed they didn’t realize (yah,... right), but when I showed the video in front of the police, they didn't have much else to say. The 100,000-yen repair was fully covered by their insurance. Because it was a hit-and-run, the officer said we could press charges, but we declined. Later, the person called to apologize and offered to bring us a gift, but we declined-we just wanted it fixed. I think they were just worried we might press charges. They were just a liar in my opinion that got caught, and I didn't want anything else to do with them. This experience reinforced how valuable a dashcam is. If we didn't have one, I would be 100,000 yen short out of my own pocket. I'm glad someone left a note and involved the police in your case-also a great reminder to ensure to park within the lines! Sorry this happened to you. It is never a fun experience, but good video and information to share though!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I do wish my car would record after I park but it turns off. That’s a great function you have. Glad you also managed to get the repair costs covered.
Hi Chani! So happy you're ok! This is another example of how awesome Japan is. Not only are the people honest , they are extremely kind and efficient. ❤ 1:29
The service and attention you received is on a whole different, and much, much higher level than you’d ever get in my country. Wow. I’m so impressed. I’m glad you shared the story of this experience, and glad it all came out so well for you. Happy driving!
Hi Chani, a fascinating video! The car accident "nightmare" is in fact another evidence of how great Japan is. The service you received from the Suzuki dealership was something out of this world. I've been living in New Zealand for 30 years and have never experienced anything like that! On the contrary, the service here is mainly rude. For example, yesterday I bought a carpet rug for my living room from a popular shop. When I got to the check out to pay, at first they wanted to charge me the full price and were denying that it was on special. I stuck to my guns and they fixed the price that was advertised online, but wasn't on their system. The carpet is quite heavy. No staff offered to help me to my car. And the shop wasn't busy at that time. I am not going to start on the dirthy and quite hostile farmers markets here. Anyway, I am glad that your car was repaired exactly the way it was when brand new. We love Millie. Julia & Tiger Lily ❤😻
I highly recommend that you send a polite, short letter of disappointment to the corporate offices about your experiences! I was used to hostile, disinterested, and poor service in California as well - things have changed since I moved to another state. It’s so refreshing. Also in California, one the rare occasions that I went to the farmer’s market it was an INDULGENCE as the prices were HIGHER than in stores…yet, not long ago, they started accepting Welfare or government issued money. Curious, when my family was forced to do that we didn’t even buy NAME BRAND items - choosing black and white “generic” to save and pinch pennies!
I hope that all the Suzuki dealerships are as awesome as yours was with this experience. 10 stars to them for their service and attention to detail. Also kudos to the Wakayama police department.
"Hi! I met you in prison!" has to be the best line ever. I usually don't laugh out loud watching TH-cam videos, but I honestly did. What another great contribution, Chani, thank you. Your channel is my favourite of all the life-in-Japan channels out there. I will look at your course now because I seem to be stuck having to relearn the basics of Japanese and can't move on from that.
It’s amazing to see how polite, honest & what good service the Japanese people are. They are just lovely, I wish other places could strive to be the same way.
What a pain! But I'm so impressed with the car dealership's service. I noticed when I lived in Japan that they have a much higher staff to customer ratio than anywhere else I've lived. I've never forgotten the airport shuttle bus I caught being waved off by a team of workers who'd helped stow the luggage, sell the tickets, answer customer questions, etc. In Australia the driver would do everything - there would no other staff. I wonder how it works economically. I know salaries are lower, but prices are also lower.
I’m so sorry that happened to your brand new car. The first few hours must have been very traumatic for you given the unknown. Am glad you are okay and the situation has been rectified to achieve a positive outcome. Love your videos and stay safe!
Another great video, Chani. I guess if there's any consolation, it's that you weren't IN the car when it happened. Nonetheless, it sounded like a very frightening phone call to receive, which could have been eased so much if the police officer had told you your car had been hit while it was parked. How funny that you met your policeman from the prison! 🤣 It looks like the Suzuki dealership did a wonderful repair job. I LOVE that level of service that only happens in Japan. When I lived there when I was 20 and had a car, I used to marvel each time I drove into a petrol station. There would always be three people running to greet me; one filling the tank, one cleaning the front windscreen, and one the back, followed by the customary bowing as I drove away. It's the only place you get to feel like royalty without all the drama that comes with it! I'm glad you're safe, and that Millie seemed obvious to all the drama, sleeping in her cardboard house. 😻
The Japanese are honourable and left their details at the accident. He even apologised over the phone for his mother. This would not happen in Australia (my car was hit in car park). The service repair was smooth and service exceptional in Japan (compared to my experience of repair). Bottom line, if you have to have a car crash experience, much better to have it in Japan! 😊
I am so sorry that you had this unpleasant incident. You made a very interesting video out of it. Fortunately, no one was injured and thanks to the situation and your insurance and the very good Suzuki service team, everything seems to have come to a happy end.
"Charter boat? What charter boat?" 😆 Natsukashi memories from Queensland 🙈😂 The Suzuki dealership lady running to the road to give you the all-clear to pull out onto the road brought tears to my eyes. Shinsetsu desu ne! 😊
Oh gosh you got me laughing out loud! 😂 “met me in prison” 😆 What a day you had. Candid camera like almost… Glad the car was repaired so professionally. Now you can enjoy it again.
I mentioned in another comment that anyone I know who's been to Japan just fell in love with it. After watching this video I see one huge reason why, and I don't understand why we ALL aren't moving there LOL Where I live (Vancouver) one would Never EVER hear an apology from either the person who caused the damage and certainly not the insurance company! Maybe they did in the old days, all I know is that I've lived here all my life and this city has become the land of the inept and entitled. I would love to live in a culture that values respect, accountability, and politeness!
Hi Chani, great news that all was resolved in such a short time. I’m impressed with the service you received from the dealership. Glad Millie is enjoying her cardboard box. 😊
The part where the "Suzuki lady" escorts you on your way is, well....Only in Japan! Another one of your boots-on-the-ground stories....really important things to know.
Even better than here in the States, with our expression, "the customer is always right". (I am not even certain how widespread this this mentality is, anymore. It was the way of handling things when I worked in retail, decades ago...)
You handled this situation with grace and patience. The Japanese certainly make it easy. They provide great customer service. She even guides you out into traffic. Accidents are never pleasant. I'm glad everything worked out.
13:43 Lower-voice Chani freaks me out 😱 Hahaha. Great video, as per usual! Thank you for sharing your story. It's very helpful to hear how things like this are dealt with in Japan.
It must have been a really stressful experience, but it's all coming together nicely and we're really seeing the incredible quality of service in Japan. 💖
Omg you made the Japanese language course! That’s amazing! Considering I might be moving to Japan sometime in the future, I’ll keep the consultation in mind in case I ever have any questions!
What wonderful service at the Suzuki dealer! And the mother who hit your car and her son did the right thing and were very apologetic. I have never visited Japan but always heard the Japanese people are polite and honest. As a tourist I would be afraid to rent a car in Japan (especially because they drive on the “wrong” side of the road) and your story only confirms that view. I’ll stick to public transit. I’m glad it all turned out OK in the end and no one was hurt.
@@ChaniJapan "I met you in prison"... LOL!!! I am sure that familiar police officer later explained to his colleagues what you meant by that statement. 😆 Glad things had a happy ending!
In the U.S., that would be considered a "hit and run," and you'd have to fix your own car. If you're lucky enough to find the person who hit your car in a parking lot accident, the fault is often split 50-50. Police typically don’t respond to accidents that occur in parking lots. Overall, this whole experience was very pleasant because of the wonderful service you received from the locals.
I have had two brand new cars hit and insurance here in the states refused to repair them properly. We are old and feel taken advantage of. Im so glad you are taken care of.
Your Every is super cute with the green paint and the woodgrain decals, and I'm glad everything in the repair went well! Also, it's interesting to me that even in English you're using the wasei-eigo term "drive recorder" for your dashcam.
Amazing service all around! Let me tell you one of my embarrassing moments and bad English/italian translation. I happened to meet a work colleague far away from the office and I didn’t recognize him as he was not in his usual security uniform. He presented me to his wife and I apologized for not recognizing him WITH HIS CLOTHING ON! I meant to say Uniform and not clothing. I’m glad everyone got a little giggle out of it. 😅
Glad everything worked out! Honestly it's such a relieve to see how much work they put into making sure everything gets repaired the propper way and not even to mention the great service they provide.
This video was the most helpful video all around I've watched in a long time. I didn't even know that a dashboard camera was called a "drive recorder" or how accurate parking can matter for insurance purposes. Glad to see everything turned out ok.
Aloha Chani ....Your channel is already interesting because of your perspective YOU DONT NEED CLICK BATE titles like this one ....There was NO nightmare that was super smooth and SO much easier than what you would experience in the US or OZ
There is a lot to be grateful for in this situation. I know if you had been in the U.S., it probably would not have gone as smoothly. I am so glad that you were able to get your car repaired back to its original condition so quickly.
Sorry you had to deal with this unfortunate accident. I'm glad you were not inside the car when it happened thank goodness.I'm glad you were wise about a very good car insurance, drive recorder / dash cam etc. 😺
Just so love the efficiency and respect in Japan. Here in the UK, if people hit your stationary car, they generally just leave without leaving their details. Glad all was sorted and you can get back to your camping trips. I don't know what was more scary - the police giving you very little information in the beginning, leaving you wondering if this was some kind of scam, or you announcing to everyone in the police station that you had been in prison 🤣🤣!
Sorry to hear about your car. If it happened in Australia, they would just drive off. Just had a neighbour (rental) yesterday reverse into my house wall (we share a driveway), they had no intention of telling me (wall was significantly damaged). It was my other neighbour who sent me the footage and I approached them today. They tried to deny it then when I told them I had it on camera. I asked them why they didn't leave a note. Worst thing is they're vacating tomorrow (as it's a rental). They've said they'll fix it but I've contacted the real estate and the owner of the property (who I'm friends with). Hoping the real estate will fix it from the renters bond. *sigh*. It just ruins your day. I love how polite and considerate Japanese people seem to be. Wish Aussies were like that.
I saw another TH-camr say that insurance fraud is very common in Japan, so you are lucky you got an honest person. And the cameras are a great idea, I've been looking at some recently too.
Japan is the most honest and trustworthy country, on late September I visited Aomori and forgot my backpack on the bus. After l went into the train station and I realized I left my backpack on the bus. Then I went to the bus ticket office to get help and after a few calls from the staff to get contacted to some drivers that they might look it out for me. No result then the staff suggested to report to the police by the train station as well. So the police have an interpreter on the phone to collect my information and report it in writing in order to proceed. In 2 hours they located my backpack which I have 2 passports credit cards and some cash in it, everything was untouched and waiting for me to pick up at the bus depot. Amazing service and amazing people in Japan. I was expecting it’s might take a few days to get it back because I trust Japanese customs and culture. I’m so impressed by the quality of the people they have! Worth the trip and experience!
This just goes to show how honest Japanese people are. I'm probably 1 out of 10 Americans who would leave a note, copy the plate and VIN number, then report an accident like this to my own insurance company. This is sad but true. I feel so safe when I travel throughout Japan. Luckily, I am there at least once a month for work as an airline pilot. Also, the car dealership culture in Japan is a stark contrast compared to US car dealerships, where they will nickle and dime you to make more money off of you. In Japan, you have full service and honesty.
watching how Japan deals with accidents makes me want to cry. watching how insurance deals with accidents makes me want to cry. watching how your dealership deals with accident repair makes me want to cry. here in california where i am everything will be bungled and frustrate you to death. and most probably no one would have left a note or called the police to begin with so you would just come out to the station and find your car damaged.
That was a suspenseful episode. But I am so glad you were not in the car when the accident happened. Also in the end it turned out to be a very positive experience for you, especially with Suzuki looking after you. Blessings!😅😅😅
Chani, what a terrible thing to happen! I'm really sorry. I can imagine what a stressful and frustrating train ride that must have been, but it seems like everyone, including the "guilty party" pulled together to get Mori back in shape and looking good! I look forward to the next camping adventure.... and thanks for all the good tips you gave us who drive in Japan. I will make sure I follow them when I drive my Suzuki Lapin around.
In the US, there are no apologies ever. Apparently it is trained out of companies due to legal reasons. The service alone from all involved puts service in the states to shame. “Within the hour” and “next day” are unheard of.
I wish Japan would send some representatives here to the States to teach some Customer Service skills. What a lovely experience it must have been to buy a car there.
I can’t believe she didn’t think someone hit her car while it was parked in the car park… that’s the first thing that popped in my head. If you parked your car out and about and get a phone call from the cops saying there’s been an accident with your car and since you were not driving your car it means one of two things… someone stole your car and crashed or someone crashed into your car at the car park 😂
I just discovered your channel and watched a few of your videos. As someone who turned 50 this year, going to Japan to teach is something I have been looking into. It is extremely difficult to find any information for anyone doing this in our age bracket. I'll mention that I haven't seen others mentioning, honestly under $1,500 (USD) for all that they fixed is really good. There is no way it would cost anywhere *near* that here in the United States. Also, everyone at the dealership was absolutely amazing. What fantastic and friendly service. Kudos to the person stopping to leave a note and calling the police station right away to report it and the son calling to apologize on behalf of his mother. Again, it's definitely a rarity also here in the States.
Glad everything worked out, your car was repaired, and no one was hurt. I was feeling your stress as you talked about your train ride back to Wakayama. (And the, “I met you in prison,” was just too funny!) The Japanese level of honesty, courtesy and politeness is above all, and would be difficult to find in the US these days. Was in Wakayama last month and was thinking of you, and understanding why you like it there. It’s really a lovely place! Thank you for sharing your’s and Millie’s adventures with all of us. Stay safe and healthy, especially now that winter is approaching. God bless!
I'm glad you weren't hurt and that everything has worked out in the end! The customer service from that dealership is really impressive! Otherwise, thank you for making a video we didn't know that we needed, but I'm sure it will be very helpful for the future.
Such an important and interesting vlog Chani. I'm going to investigate having those front and back cameras fitted to my car here in the UK having seen how useful they could be. Love little Millie's cardboard home...what is it with cats and empty boxes....mine are exactly the same!

Having this happen with a brand new car in a foreign country where you didn't know the process must have been a nightmare. But I am glad you had such a good experience with the police, the car dealership, the insurance and the other party. And thank you gor another fascinating insight into life in Japan ❤
Hi Chani! I just found out your channel, I'm so happy!! I decided to start from the beginning and check your older videos so I can know exactly what, you have done ever since you came and while I'm watching, this one came out!! Thanks. It was an interesting encounter but all did go smoothly with the repair.
@@JuliaStewart-2023 I totally relate to your rug buying experience. I’m always surprised by the good service here. 😃
Such great service!
Haha, I am so glad you liked that part! Thank you for watching!
I am glad you are ok Chani! At least you have a fun story to tell now haha!
they sound way more honest and organized, glad it all worked out for you
It’s amazing to see how polite, honest & what good service the Japanese people are.
Yes, it was a great experience. The service was really helpful.
I’m so sorry that happened to your brand new car. The first few hours must have been very traumatic for you given the unknown. Am glad you are okay and the situation has been rectified to achieve a positive outcome. Love your videos and stay safe!
Thank you 😃
Another great video, Chani. I guess if there's any consolation, it's that you weren't IN the car when it happened. Nonetheless, it sounded like a very frightening phone call to receive, which could have been eased so much if the police officer had told you your car had been hit while it was parked. How funny that you met your policeman from the prison! 🤣
It looks like the Suzuki dealership did a wonderful repair job.
Yes. I agree. Very honest person. I think Japan has some very good honesty.
Right? My car has a big white mark on it from being hit and I'll pay a 700 dollar excess to get it fixed cause they didn't leave details.
The dealership has been so good even after the sale!
Oh gosh you got me laughing out loud! 😂 “met me in prison” 😆
What a day you had. Candid camera like almost…
Glad the car was repaired so professionally. Now you can enjoy it again.
I mentioned in another comment that anyone I know who's been to Japan just fell in love with it. After watching this video I see one huge reason why, and I don't understand why we ALL aren't moving there LOL
Where I live (Vancouver) one would Never EVER hear an apology from either the person who caused the damage and certainly not the insurance company!
Millie loves the box so much
The part where the "Suzuki lady" escorts you on your way is, well....Only in Japan! Another one of your boots-on-the-ground stories....really important things to know.
Such good service at Suzuki😃
In 👠
17:08 Japanese service is next level. Love it. “The customer is god”.
I’m also glad all is ok 😅 👌
Thank you
Even better than here in the States, with our expression, "the customer is always right". (I am not even certain how widespread this this mentality is, anymore. It was the way of handling things when I worked in retail, decades ago...)
@@allie1953there is no comparison.
None.
14:21 Higher-voice Chain does NOT, I repeat, does NOT freak me out 😆
Funny🤣
異国の地で何かあった時に、すぐ対応できる言語力を持つChaniさん、尊敬します。私も英語頑張ります!
Arigato Gozaimasu! I wasn’t prepared for the situation. It definitely makes me appreciate the value of language.
It must have been a really stressful experience, but it's all coming together nicely and we're really seeing the incredible quality of service in Japan. 💖
If the police had simply said her car was struck while parked at the train station it would not have been so stressful.
I love how organised and prepared you are for these kinds of situations with the driver cams, insurance and even a lawyer! Glad it all worked out ok
Oh no! I hope you're ok. Just watching now.❤
I’m ok! Just a lot of hassle and a few embarrassing moments 🤦♀️
@@ChaniJapan "I met you in prison"... LOL!!! I am sure that familiar police officer later explained to his colleagues what you meant by that statement. 😆 Glad things had a happy ending!
I wish people were this honest and polite where I live!
Welcome to the club
In the U.S., that would be considered a "hit and run," and you'd have to fix your own car. If you're lucky enough to find the person who hit your car in a parking lot accident, the fault is often split 50-50. Police typically don’t respond to accidents that occur in parking lots. Overall, this whole experience was very pleasant because of the wonderful service you received from the locals.
I have had two brand new cars hit and insurance here in the states refused to repair them properly. We are old and feel taken advantage of. Im so glad you are taken care of.
That's really unfortunate. I know how frustrating that feels. So disappointing insurance didn’t do a good job for you.
18:28 Awwww, you've put so much pressure on that poor gentleman 😅
Your Every is super cute with the green paint and the woodgrain decals, and I'm glad everything in the repair went well! Also, it's interesting to me that even in English you're using the wasei-eigo term "drive recorder" for your dashcam.
I’m glad you liked the car and I agree the Japanese term for dashcam has morphed into my English. 😄
That is hilarious 🤣 love it! ❤️
Sorry to hear this happened to you Chani. Thanks for using this as an opportunity to help others.
I appreciate your kind words.
Your story was actually very amusing, but I'm sure your experience was anything but. Your car looks very nice by the way!
Thanks 😃
Glad to see everything went fine Chani... amazing customer service from Japan as expected
Yes. I was really impressed! 😃
I'm glad you think my channel is interesting! Very kind of you to say that ❤️I just wanted to capture the anxiety of the moment. 😅
There is a lot to be grateful for in this situation. I know if you had been in the U.S., it probably would not have gone as smoothly. I am so glad that you were able to get your car repaired back to its original condition so quickly.
Sorry the accident happened but you were at the best country and good people around you. love your videos❤
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words.
Glad to see you’re OK. Take care😊
Thanks so much! I am doing well! ❤️
Sorry you had to deal with this unfortunate accident. I'm glad you were not inside the car when it happened thank goodness.I'm glad you were wise about a very good car insurance, drive recorder / dash cam etc. 😺
Thank you. I’m going to continue to be careful. It’s a bit of a reminder that anything can happen. 😃
I do really miss the excellent & consistent level of customer service in Japan. Great video!
I am a middle aged woman in the US and I've never known this level of customer service in my life.
It was like a comedy of errors 🤦♀️
Oh no😬That is not good. I hope the cost is covered.
I saw another TH-camr say that insurance fraud is very common in Japan, so you are lucky you got an honest person. And the cameras are a great idea, I've been looking at some recently too.
It seems like a lot of people are getting dash cams these days.
Our family still says 'what charter boat' when someone can't find something that's in plain sight.😃
Yep! Me too 🤣
We love Suzuki! Such service! So glad we saw the young guy who was so nice. The lady too.
The young sales man is the same age as my sons. Such a good young man.
What a lovely story. So refreshing to hear again and again everyone’s positive experiences.
They are so polite and efficient 😀!
I know exactly what you mean. I would probably have a battle back in OZ too.
That was a suspenseful episode. But I am so glad you were not in the car when the accident happened. Also in the end it turned out to be a very positive experience for you, especially with Suzuki looking after you. Blessings!😅😅😅
Thank you! I was really disappointed the car was damaged but it did all end well ❤️
Yes, Nancy! It was, indeed, "suspenseful"! Had I not been sitting in bed, watching this on my laptop, I would have been "on the edge of my seat"!
Thank you for sharing important events like this.
You're welcome!😊
Chani, what a terrible thing to happen! I'm really sorry. I can imagine what a stressful and frustrating train ride that must have been, but it seems like everyone, including the "guilty party" pulled together to get Mori back in shape and looking good! I look forward to the next camping adventure.... and thanks for all the good tips you gave us who drive in Japan. I will make sure I follow them when I drive my Suzuki Lapin around.
Thank you so much! Yes, it was a stressful ordeal, but I’m glad to see the car back in good shape. 🙂
Wow I learn so much with your videos. Thanks Chani. Keep going, keep growing. I hope one day to meet you for a coffee in Japan.
Chani, your storytelling ability is amazing. Clear, concise, funny and to the point. Love your videos❤
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. ❤️
What a polite people the Japanese are, wonderful attitudes and service. If that had happened where I live they'd have just driven off
I can’t believe she didn’t think someone hit her car while it was parked in the car park… that’s the first thing that popped in my head.
Surprisingly useful video, hopefully none of us ever need to use this information. Awesome little van.
Thanks for watching! Hope you never need to use any of this info.
I wouls ALSO be the person to blurt out ”i saw you in prison!” Hahaha! 😂
God bless!
Thank you. You were in Wakayama! Yes winter is coming. Time to get warm stuff out.
I'm glad you weren't hurt and that everything has worked out in the end!

Very good service at the dealer 😃 Thanks for watching 👋
Such an important and interesting vlog Chani. I'm going to investigate having those front and back cameras fitted to my car here in the UK having seen how useful they could be. Love little Millie's cardboard home...what is it with cats and empty boxes....mine are exactly the same!
