Wonderful experience & we learned by witnessing & interacting with some of the owners of the sculpture shops & their works. Many of the sculptures are sculpted with only a single piece of stone. Mahabalipuram is famous for Krishna's Butter Ball, Varaha Cave, Beach, Descent of the Ganga River, Souvenir shops, Group of Monuments, and Shore Temple. The ancient name is Thirukadalmallai. Mamallapuram is a town in Chengalpattu district. It was one of the major port cities in the Pallava Kingdom. It became the site of a group of royal monuments, many carved out of the living rock. These are dated to the 7th & 8th centuries, rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), the giant open-air relief the Descent of the Ganges, the shore temple Oh yes, you can also see people working on the art & they are friendly people enough to hand you their chisel to try a chip. You can find here mostly the sculptures are made of sandstone & granite stone. There are many replicas in these sculptures or souvenir shops.
