- Scientists believe that pumpkins originated in North America about 9000 years ago. The oldest pumpkin seeds have been found in Mexico and date back to somewhere between 7000-5550 B.C..
The top pumpkin-producing states include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California. According to the Illinois Department of Agriculture, 95% of the U.S. Pumpkin intended for processing is grown in Illinois.

I worked at a watermelon farm for a season, and you are correct, some of the hardest workers on the planet. I also worked at a hotel doing banquet serving and there was a strong work ethic. It was a compliment when I was on my third triple shift in a row and my next door locker mate Juan said "Joure here agayn? Damn, jou work like a Mexican."

It’s generally better to grow varieties that are resistant to squash bugs. Most butternuts or moschata pumpkins have good to excellent resistance, I’d recommend those.
