I love it! Thanks, Falcon. This reminds me of the SC I used to play with my friends back then (rather chaotic, scrappy gameplay all over the place, not a consistent strategy in sight). I do remember Patch 1.08, evidently being almost as ancient as you. I also remember discussing it, arguing how Zealots going from 80/80 to 60/100 is buffing the Protoss (lols), Sunkens being nerfed from 400 down to 300 hp, etc. Why the heck does it feel like it was only last week?

Dude, can't believe I'm tearing my eyes when reading your comment. You are right, we were used to playing this game 6-8 hours a day, watch replays day and night, and arguing every single details of the game. Damn it, it does sound like it was only yesterday! I love Starcraft, and all the Starcraft players.
I was watching Falcon casts from 5 yrs ago and noticed how much more quiet and restrained he was.
Glad to see you show us your bubbly self more, man. You're the only SC caster I follow, because there's no competition in the enjoyment department.
Amazed to put in perspective how much Sc PVP evolved, too. It's an entirely different thing now!
i remember this, we played with black and white CRT monitors , i was light gray and we did that good old fashioned red eye till the birds started screaming at us , then we just loaded up another and kept going
I guess I was lucky to have a color CRT and relatively solid 1ghz processor. a full 60gb of storage too!!! I bought my CPU a few weeks after 9/11 from a really nice middle eastern salesman at Sears. he basically sold it to me at cost, said he hadn't a sale in weeks and needed to keep his job

1.08 was surely the biggest patch ever. Capital units reduced supply was huge, reworking so many of the unit costs/timings/damage...and of course REPLAYS!! I was also a freshman and this patch came out right at the end of the semester for us. I moved to FL for the summer to be a lifeguard and there was no internet where I lived. I remember playing BW in my head on the way to work (yes, I was obsessed and suffering withdrawals)! LT was such a "great map" or so I thought back then. watching this now I'm reminded of how hard it was depending on spawn location, like how zerg at 12 couldn't just fast expand because they needed to block choke where as 9 can fast expand and block from expo... and the high grounds and island options!!! Oh and my claim to fame was that I was briefly ranked #1 on Ladder that winter (1.07 still). When the ladder reset, all of us were online and we played a lot of games and I hit 1400 within a few hours and was #1!!!

Btw, Lost temple is the most played map in that era. It actually appears in my dream some time. I can still draw it out without thinking, even though I stopped playing SC since 2011. Thank you for bring these memories back. Really appreciated.
Weird to see how the zerg barely micro controls hydras and lurkers to avoid the storms which are very effective against it

Funny how when you click from one player to the other, the minerals don't just "switch" to the new player's amounts, but they add/subtract to get there.
I do sometimes install a copy of SC from the original discs to get a single-player playthrough as when it came out.
Might not seem like it from this replay compared to the current meta but Nal_rA was considered the best protoss in the world around this time, before Reach started to dominate. Would love to see a YellOw replay from this era! Btw I competed in Canada's WCG 2003 and 2004 qualifiers :) I was in high school. Trip down memory lane.

Oh it's a different rain for sure. Current protoss rain was originally SKT1 3rd protoss behind Bisu and Best going by the name By.Sun back in the KesPa era. But he was a new guy when Bisu was already well established MSL winner and Best had became house hold name already too. Sun was always kind of in the shadow of those 2 beasts. He was sort of up and coming but he was never able to break out as S-class player before KesPa era ended. He did jump into SCII pretty early on and took the name Rain when he changed over and he stuck with it even when he came back to bw.

Yes.
This indeed was the last balance upgrade. None has been done after this. And yeah they REDUCED scout cost to 275/125 in this update. ALMOST making them cheap enough to be viable :D. But tbh they did amazing job with this patch. Imagine if this had not happened. I can tell you bw wouldn't have broken out as professional e-sports without this patch. And remember bw was the 1st the original e-sports. Without this patch we might still all be nerds instead of being gamers. Well of course we're still all nerds tho :D

bro I like your comment but I really doubt what you said about these 2001 players can't compete with 2024. I have been watching these guys replays and learns since 2001. Nal_ra was the top protoss player and won weighted titles by using protoss when almost all Terran player dominated the era.
I also played during this era, but I have never seen a zerg throwing the game that hard. Good thing Rain plays protoss now, coz he apparentely had no talent for zerg :D
