The realistic laser-cut physics were always a major selling point for me. It’s awesome how you can keep holding on to the next checkpoint,as long as there’s still a bit of you left.
My favourite part about Distance (aside from the aesthetic and soundtrack of course)...
It has easily the best track editor in any racing game I've ever played (or even heard of). Every track in the game can be made using the in-game editor, and as a result there's a lot of incredible custom maps available to download.
This game is the definition of an underrated racing game.

Distance is honestly one of my all time favorite games. The mechanics play together so well and its so satisfying to pull off a difficult route. I've sunk over 1000 hours into it and I still keep coming back for more. You really hit the nail on the head with this: there really is no other game quite like it.

Glad you included gripfly and making up your own faster routes, most reviews don't play the game long enough to figure that stuff out since it's a little too complex to be taught in the main Adventure campaign, and most people stop playing after that - it doesn't get a proper tutorial until the Nightmare Fuel set in Sprint, in the map Zenith. Fun fact, the devs did mess with disabling the rotation jets and boost if you sliced those parts off just like the wings, but no boost just felt too slow and unfun, and partial jets just led to some stuff being impossible unlike wings where you can still get around with just 1 side. Jordan is definitely still around, we last heard from him at the end of December; he did a stream for about 3hrs playing through all the 2021 DAC maps (Distance Advent Calendar, community workshop event every December).

This could've been the Portal of racing games. It's sad that Refract Studio is now disbanded and the game never reached the audience it deserved, it really is one of the best games I've ever played.
I haven't played an arcade game like this in decades, but I would give this one a go, thanks to this video! I really dig the atmopshere and the fact it's not from a big studio. Thanks!

I love this game alot, I have over 1800 hours in it and have been in the community for over 3 years. Everyone in the community is very friendly and always excited to see a new player. The game is one of the best small titles out there and no one can top it in my opinion. Great review!
For those who can't afford to buy the game just yet but want to try out the mechanics on display, you can still download Nitronic Rush, the original 2012 prototype of this game. It was made by the same team for a university project, back when they were still studying at DigiPen. It's much more simplistic than Distance, of course, but still great fun.
I played that game a lot, and it led to me being part of their 2013 Kickstarter for Distance. I'm so happy to get the chance to support their project over 10 years ago, and I'm so proud to have my name in the credits forever.
I've been playing Refract Studios games even before they became a company and were working on their game as a college project. Nitronic Rush is the precursor to Distance, and you can see just how much influence it had.
I've been waiting a few years and I finally get to play this game on PS5 today. Thanks for making this video!
I have over 250 hours in this game and I think it deserves all the love it can get.
I picked up Distance right after release on a whim, while looking around Steam for VR-compatible games. I was immediately hooked by the combination of fast action, amazing aesthetics, and a soundtrack that evolves as the campaign progresses. In VR, it is one of the most intense experiences I could expose anyone to.
However, when I describe the game to people I use one sentence: "This is a game with STYLE"
the biggest influence on display here is clearly san francisco rush 2049, particularly the dreamcast and n64 versions of that game - also game that doesn't get enough love these days and honestly still one of my favorite racers ever made. distance (and nitronic rush before it) basically take 2049's gauntlet-style stunt levels and do a whole bunch more with the concept. glad to see this getting some coverage on youtube. i wish we had more games like this these days.

Hey man, good review of the game. I would just like to add a few points that actually make the game special, that I think were briefly touched in this review and things you missed out on completely.
- Tracks. This game has the loosest definition of tracks. You have "tracks" like zenith (you showed it here) where there's hardly any track on the faster route. There's tracks in the game that mimic tracks from mario or sonic or the popular acceleracers. You've got ''tracks" that are literal bossfights in which you have to dodge and beat the boss's attacks. And I haven't even mentioned the hell that is tracks like mobra. You've got tracks where boost is disabled and only wings exist. And then there's tracks like coffee (do play that level) which is essentially your car going through a stream of water to the finish line. And there's tracks that I don't even know how to classify.
- Gripfly: That mechanic of going belly up is called gripfly and is a basic mechanic. Its the equivalent of doing some very basic combo's in fighting games or learning how to turn a car in a racing game. You have to know this pretty well to attempt the shortcuts and this is where the real fun begins.
- Campaigns: This game's hidden campaign, "The other side" is properly hidden. And requires a good bit of skill to unlock, particularly using that gripfly mechanic. So this game really has 5 campaigns. Adventure, Lost to echoes (a callback to nitronic rush), Nexus, Legacy (the old distance levels and campaign) and The other side. In addition to the sprint and challenge tracks. I believe if you tell people about them they will at least try to find it.
- Stunt mode: This game has a stunt mode that is not mentioned here. I personally don't play it that much but it is quite fun. And it too requires a lot of skill to top the leaderboards.
- Editor: The amount of freedom this game's editor on offer is truly staggering. Have a look at my channel to see swamp realm from acceleracers. Look up connected lynk, Opus, S A, etc. All of them have uploaded the more interesting levels.
- General freedom: There is almost no racing game that comes close to the amount of freedom that distance has on offer. Maybe the crew, but like the crew the distance car (spectrum) can go in the air, road on water (yes, there's levels that have the car float around like a speedboat) and underwater. The crew 2 may have a gigantic map but distance has insane variety in its maps and has a lot of them. And at first glance distance might not seem like a open world type game but it kind of is.
So, regarding your point about not being able to see anything, you need to turn up the gamma (aka brightness). That will make it 10x easier to see things and make levels like abyss less of a pain.
Overall a solid review mate, but I would highly suggest you add some of my points in your review. The game has A TON of content in the form of workshop maps and if you want some of the most innovative ones, ask me and I'll list them for you. Just a few you might wanna check out: Coffee, Air, swamp realm, dizzy flail, Mobra (this is extrememly hard), no wings only boost, DAC Impact, sakura bossfight, etc. Oh and be sure to check out the other side campaign.

I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH! Sure, it's hard and incredibly punishing to unskilled players... But it's still got a userbase continuing to create levels to this very day! And honestly, I had NO idea Jordan Hemenway was left by himself to work on the game.
This is such an amazing game and deserved so much more recognition!

It's amazing. I played through the first campaign, and while it was frustrating for like 5 minutes because I didn't reconfigure my controls, after that, it was spectacular.
Amazing atmosphere, capturing the dark, technical future, has an amazing soundtrack, it's easy to get into, the only problem is that it's a bit too short, and also, you're given a timer in the beginning and it's not really relevant, and I wish they'd let me drive around a green forest in the end more. But other than that, this I think is a fantastic little hidden gem. 9/10 for the overall experience.
Legend says the dev was hesitant to take time out of developping the game because of burnout... as he thought the players would shed buckets of tears...
The only intense racing game I’ve ever come across, spent thousands of hours especially when you have to rotate and use D or A to jump to the other track😭I uninstalled it because i got frustrated but I’ve installed it again and I’ve passed where I couldn’t cross and I’m loving it❤️I think i might be reaching the last level soon, this game is just unique❤️
been playing this game off and on for a long while now, I just played it recently again since the last time i played and it's gotten so much better with it's visuals. The last time I played was when the first chapter was still being finished, and holy cow they completely revamped it and it's all so amazing. I definitely recommend this game if you're into racing, racing with friends, or I believe there used to be a battle mode to fight players too. Glad to see someone putting some well deserved notice to this game!

I played the game since it came out. It's basically a Trackmania game except the car has boosters on all directions and wings.
Yes, if you are curious, yes there are mods for this game that bring more cars including cars from the Hot Wheels franchise
If you were born there around the 2000s and watched hot wheels highway 35 or hot wheels acceleracers, you understand what I'm talking about.

the only downside to this game is that it should be way more known. i literally found out about this game not by a friend or an ad, i was watching a video that happened to have the game as background. this means i discovered it with complete randomness.

This game is basically "what if Spiderman was a car?"
Jumping from the road from a building to another building to driving upward another building to fall into a looping then around a tunnel like in Rollcage and doing tricks all the way through like you're Tony Hawk or some shit, discovering hidden tricks or content hidden a bit of everywhere... derping about in zero zero bits with the thrusters and and then flying about with open car door transforming into wings like you're a vehicle from the freaking Mask cartoon... falling into gigantic holes and gathering more and more speed as you call into a tunnel made of broken roads and asking for more as your smiles start getting so big it hurt your mouth x'D

i remember playing this as a child, was really hard
I have this game in my steam library and I remember I played it many years ago. But I wanted to give it another shot. Connected my gamepad and wanted to play. Constantly this virtual keyboard was popping up rendering the game to almost unplayable. Why? This is a steam issue not a game issue, or is it? Don't know.
That definitely sounds like a Steam issue. Try seeing if this helps with solving the issue:
On the Steam application, click on Steam at the top left
Click on Settings
Select Controller at the bottom left (second last on the list)
Select Desktop Configuration
Press Browse Configs at the bottom
Click on the large box which says Disabled
On this screen, you should be able to see if any buttons are activating any of the keyboard keys, which may be activating the virtual keyboard.
If nothing is bound on there, click the Apply Configuration button at the bottom, then restart the game.

If nothing is popping up after selecting Desktop Configuration, make sure your controller support is selected by clicking on General Controller Settings at the top of the Controller Settings box, and then ticking whichever controller you're using.

Freedom. I can go off track and use whatever means I want to get to the finish line in the fastest way possible. No stupid barriers like in nfs. The custom tracks are so versatile, they can cover a nearly limitless genre's of games, from sidescrollers, top down view, puzzle (and I mean portal level puzzles), pure drag races, regular races, story levels, etc. Hell it even has bossfights. Go look up sakura bossfight on youtube for distance.
You tell me of any other ''racing'' game that does this. Not even trackmania gets that versatile. Forget nfs mw 2005 or blur, which have 1 or 2 unique things about them. Distance straight up has MANY unique things packed into it.
Which other game offers you a car that flies, rides walls/ceilings, goes on and underwater, jumps, has wings, etc. Not even rocket league goes that far. And that is just 1 aspect.
I love the game, I'm playing it now for the first time. We need mre arcade type games like this. However as soon as the game introduced the air tilt ability i just couldnt. it got so confusing .

IMHO Distance failed to catch players because it took forever to release since its hyped alpha demo then it gets no support after that. For such a slow development they should have more marketing communication or reduce their ambitions to deliver quicker.
I feel really bad for pirating this game in the past, but i was younger and i didn't have a job.
I'll get a job in 2023 and one of the first things i buy is this game on steam 👍

it originally released as early access in 2014. the FULL game came out in 2018. so the game is technically 8 years old.
