I bought a Moonman M800 in purple (amber was unavailable) with Bock nib on Ebay. The difference in price with Moonman nib was less than 10 US dollars. Total cost was 39 US dollars with shipping (no box). I thought it was a very good deal. The nib writes very well out of the box! Very smooth, very consistent. I love that bock nib. I am not sure it takes standard international converter though. I tried Schmidt k5 converter that i have, and it would not fit. If anyone could confirm or refute this, i would appreciate it.
Standard converters are not standard at all. Some may fit and some may not. You always have to look in advance if somebody has tried one. Pelikan, Schmidt, Faber-Castell may not fit the same pen though they're labeled as standard.
Ive found that most of my nibs require work of some kind. All of my Chinese pens have needed wettening and smoothing and in some cases removal of undesired material. But my Kaweco Supra and my Bock nibs have all needed wettening. My Jowo and Lamy nibs have not needed any work but I polish them anyway because I like a smooth nib. My two platinum nibs both needed a fair bit of polishing. I have two Wing Sung 699s which had awful nibs out of the plastic sleeve but I refined them to write just as well as my Lamy 2000 so I never really worry about how good the stock nib is its more about the quality of the feed and the aesthetics of the pen for me.
Had pretty much the identical experience with my amber version. I have had Moonman nibs before and generally they have been pretty good. Bud this one was an abomination, very scratchy with poor flow. I had the whole thing apart, separated the nib from the feed and cleaned it in water with a drop of washing up liquid. Then re-assembled and gave it some smoothing with 3 grades of MicroMesh which thankfully cured the problem. I bought a second in blue, but that hasn’t been inked yet, just hope I don’t have to go through the same palaver again.
Although I don't own the M800, my experience with Moonman nibs is similar to your own. I like the amber colour of this pen. It looks absolutely superb. I don't like tinkering too much with nibs like this. Often I find you solve one problem but create another.
Can I buy a Bock nib separately and screw it in or is the pen designed so that you have to buy the Bock running variant? It seems to be cheaper this way at the moment.
I am thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these, but I don't want to add several bucks to get the Bock version, question is, can you swap this out with a Bock or a Nemosine nib? I have a few of those lying around
Great video, In my Moonman M8 I had to put a well-tuned Jinhao nib in to fix the Moonman drying out/hard starting nib, I was lucky I scored a really good Jinhao a while ago. I have a few really good Moonman nibs but I think there inconsistent nowadays.
Thanks Ethel - I'm so glad that I'm not the only person to have had issues with Moonman's nibs. I'm glad to hear that you had a much better experience by swapping the nib of your M800.
The Bock nib version is a better pen than the Leonardo. Especially because you get the option to change the nib with a wide variety of nibs. For example, I replaced my 800 nib with a titanium + ebonite feed one.
@@zakariyyaalbrahim9613 you can get Bock nibs at Beaufort ink.co.uk I have bought mine there and the guys that have the site are very friendly and supporting.
I have two of these, both with Moonman nib. I really like the design of the body, and the pen is really comfortable in the hand. Unfortunately the nibs on both pens (from different eBay stores) were misaligned on arrival, and needed some tweaking. That really *is* a quality control issue they need to address - though it's hard to know whether that's got more to do with the manufacturer, the supplier, or the jostling these pens endure in the mail system. Thanks for this review - I'm a bit more enthused by the pen than you perhaps, but I think you were pretty fair!
Hi. I have the 800 whit he moonmam nib and after tune it it writes very well but I want to try a different nib. You know if is out there something that fits whit the same feed? Thanks guys.
It looks like the Italian primo pen which costs about ten times as much. Currently about $30 with the Moonman nib…over $55 with the Bock nib. The Italian original is going for about $300! Any and all outrage about these pens stealing buyers should be laughed out of court. Do you buy an original oil painting, or a print? Right. The market is totally different. I say congrats to the Moonman brand (etc.) for bringing these good designs to the masses. Those of us who can never afford a $300 pen appreciate it.
Well, for all the reasons that you mentioned I ordered my Moonman M800 with a Bock nib. I hate mediocre and inconsistent Chinese nibs (although Jinhao has progressed although lot). Didn't like PENBBS nibs out of the box either ... I totally agree with your conclusion about Chinese pens and pricing. I'll post my impression when I receive my M800 some time in June ... I hope ... 😂😂😂 (And I'm going to get a real Leonardo by Xmas ☺)
I look forward to hearing what you think of think of the Moonman M800 with a Bock nib - I'm getting quite annoyed that the Chinese pens are going up in price, but the quality of the nibs, etc. is creeping backwards to Jinhao standards when I first started my Fountain Pen Journey nearly three years ago. I hope that your pen arrives quickly - I've been waiting for months now for an order from PENBBS to arrive!
@@FountainPenJourney the only Chinese brand that makes decent, even very good, nibs out of the box is Wing Sung. For all other Chinese brands I replace the nibs with Bock or Jowo nibs anyway. Moonman has made the leap and upgraded the the design and quality of its pens but not that of the nibs, so justifying the price is a compromise, especially if you are going to spend another £10-12 for a Bock/Jowo nib.
I was thinking about this yesterday - I came to the same conclusion, that the only consistently decent nibs found in Chinese pens are Wing Sung nibs. However, this only applies to their newer pens. Anything pre 2015 seems to be a bit more variable in quality.
I received a blue one two weeks ago. (Doug Rathbun liked the color, although he has since reviewed the amber, as well ;) I love the PenBBS cat colors... I only have one, an Amber is a Cat ;) My M800 wrote very well right out of the box, which is good since I haven’t learn nib tweaking yet :)
It's good to hear that yours wrote well straight out of the box. It's a pain when nibs don't write well, though nib tweaking often isn't quite as scary as it sounds. Enjoy your pens 😀

Thanks for your comment Gary - This pen has been a real disappointment, even by Moonman's (nib) standards.

Having only got the Moonman nib variant, I can't say for sure if the section will accept a Bock nib unit.

I think that it’s a pretty easy swap. I haven’t tried it myself though.
@gadgetstop321 has just done a video about this.

When after I tuned this nib, it's still a very poor writer, so I am also going to swap the nib - I'll let you know how I get on.
