      Thanks,
      I agree, I see a lot of nice movements with irreversible deliberate damage done to them.

    Hello James , I got my grandmother and grandfathers anniversary clock up and running like a charm. The pendulum had been dropped and bent. Repaired that and installed a new torsion spring. Running five days right on time. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks again.

    • @jamesmartin5370

      Great to hear you got that one working.
      Like I mentioned, our house has too many bouncy floors for those anniversary clocks.
      They are a dependable little movement when set up correctly on a solid surface.

      Yes,
      Always nice to get a well maintained time piece in from time to time.
      Not too many though, lack of a good challenge could allow boredom to creep in.

    Well, that was a surprise!
    1. Why that clamp with that electrical wire on it?
    2. For measuring walking speed, what a nice instrument, never seen before.
    Would like to know more about that.
    3. The platform with the escapement movement with the maintenance of the pivot points and then the audio, really fun.
    Nice gift for the start of the year.

    • @jamesmartin5370

      Clamp is the electrical pickup for the timing machine instrument.
      Timing machine is a Vibrograf B100 from Sweden, its old but still works good for some jobs.
      Yea, that clunking noise was the ships bell striking gears setting up to strike.

    Hey James I have the same clock and would like it serviced. It was a gift from my company in 2002. I have replaced the click springs 2 times now and it looses about 4 minutes a week. The sound spring sounds different from the time spring when winding and not sure if that is correct. Where are you located. Richard

    I was holding my breath while you were working on the platform escapement - such a delicate thing. Is setting up the strike side difficult on reassembly? I guess you've done a few of these.

    • @jamesmartin5370

      Thank You,
      Need some steady controlled hands for those.
      Strike side set up is not a problem, same as any other clock strike side, you need to clock the gears and levers correctly and in the end they all will mesh together as designed.

      I am sure there are others out there that will work but I am unfamiliar with them.

    What is your preferred method of cleaning clock movements?

    • @jamesmartin5370

      No one answer that applies to all, depends on type of movement.
      Ammonia based cleaners for bare brass movements.
      Mild non Ammonia cleaners that won't strip the finish off for lacquered movements.
      A lot of variables to consider.
      Clocks with platform escapements need a watch cleaning machine with different cleaners.

    hello, mr. martin where do you get your clock hammer leather from?

    • @jamesmartin5370

      Its been about 20 years since I have bought it and the clock company is no longer in business.
      I bought about 5 feet of it and still have lots left.
      Any clock supply house will have it, also you can purchase a 6 foot length of antique sewing machine belt, same stuff, for much less, it comes in about 3 different sizes.
      Good luck, Its easy to find.

    Hi James! I recently came into possession of a Chelsea ships bell clock with a very low serial number of 6106 whilst I may not have the expertise in clock restoration as you do. I have watched several of your videos and am hoping to restore the clock to the best of my ability without damaging the clock. I’ll be posting videos of my progress and would appreciate if you could give me some feedback when they are up as I wish to improve while moving forward with restorations.

    Another great video sir! Nice looking clock and movement. Is there a reason why people scratch the barrels? I see this in wristwatches too.

    • @jamesmartin5370

      Thanks,
      People scribe marks on movements because they are inexperienced and unfamiliar with knowing how to put them back together.
      When it comes time to put the movement together the scratched marks help them know where the parts go.
      Movements should never be defaced, it pulls the value of them down to the serious collector, sad way to do business.
