Tired of walking and driving in Switzerland? Let's travel through Switzerland a bit differently. How different you say? A boat ride on a paddle steamer on Lake Luzern can show you the crown jewel of Switzerland, and the tiny villages on the Lake that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1291.
Lake Lucerne, surrounded by famous mountains, is the most diverse lake in the country. It is somewhat reminiscent of a fjord landscape, but is characterized by a mild maritime climate. Boat trips on five historic paddle steamers and 15 elegant saloon motor ships are among the region's highlights.
The name of the lake has its origins in the historic four "Waldstätten", the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden and the canton of Lucerne, which together surround Lake Lucerne. The foundation stone for the Swiss Confederation was laid with the Rütli Oath in 1291 on Lake Lucerne. In the past, the lake was an important transport axis, and until 1863 it was the only trade connection to the Gotthard Pass.
A steamboat trip on a bright, sunny summer's day across the branching Lake Lucerne is undoubtedly a wonderful experience. But the trip on the late-night service through the mild summer night or just before Christmas towards the sea of lights of the city of Lucerne is at least as unforgettable. Or the mystical atmosphere on the lake during the autumn fog, or when the steamboat safely trudges through the waves of Lake Uri whipped by the foehn. The trip in the cozy warmth of the saloon motor ships offers pure relaxation, while the white, sugar-coated winter landscape passes by outside.
With Switzerland's largest shipping company, you can reach many of the region's most important excursion destinations and mountain railways such as Rigi, Pilatus, Bürgenstock or Klewenalp. Musical and culinary specialties are also offered on numerous scheduled and special trips. The wide range of delicacies from the on-board kitchen doubles the enjoyment of a boat trip.
A boat trip can be ideally combined with a hike, e.g. on the "Swiss Path", a themed trail on the history of the country. There are several cycling and skating paths along the lake shores, as well as numerous bathing and rest areas. A trip to the popular sightseeing and shopping city of Lucerne with a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport with IMAX cinema, the Glacier Garden or a shopping spree through the old town is also worthwhile.
The "Gotthard Panorama Express" still takes this lake route today: the journey begins in Lucerne with a boat trip to Flüelen and continues in a first-class panoramic carriage over the famous Gotthard railway line to Ticino.
