I truly appreciate hand cranking when coming through the ranks iny early days. And feel blessed to have earned the hydraulic systems in my later years. Newbies want instant gratification. Only the mechanic back in the 80's had the cordless screw gun. That old Makita with the long battery. It's 35 years later for me.
I'm grateful for this experience in the field.

A new truck costs closer to $65,000-$150,000 in the USA today. That old $2,500 truck is less complicated and less expensive all around. Ideally a Toyota, Honda, or old Mazda truck.

If you have a job that is going to require punching 100 KOs or even 25 KOs or more you buy the $2k KO set and charge it to the job. Add that cost right into that estimate either as the tool purchase or spread out that cost into other parts of the job cost.

I was the same. I started as a driver and then the warehouse foreman for what was the biggest elect contractor on the West Coast and we also had a full time tool repair man who I grew up with and we were only 20 yrs old and we would fix tools from screwguns to ramset guns and we both went to Greenlee repair school so we worked on hydraulic table benders and KO sets and we fixed rotohammers you name a tool used in commercial industrial electrical we knew how to fix and use it. Then I went to work as an apprentice for a small 5 man old school family shop. Amazing electricians with great work but nothing modern as far as tools. But it's good to know that you can do almost any job with Linemans, a screwdriver, strippers and a Wiggy tester.
But when I became a journeyman I went back to working for the biggest and best companies and you walk on any job that first day they handed you a care package with leather and cotton gloves, whole saws and arbors may tip hex drivers ¼ - 3/8, Philips and straight may tips for your drill, safety glasses, an induction tester, a step bit, forehead liners for your hardhat and brand new hardhat if you needed one, there was a gangbox with blades for your razor knife, hacksaw blades, boxes of brand new hole saws and brand new arbors, boxes of sharpies, pencils, earplugs, you could get fingerless leather gloves or fingered or with just thumb and index and middle fingers uncovered, boxes of drill bits, first aid kits that had drugs in them.
In those days we, the crew, would get to scrap our copper and use the money by giving the apprentice a couple hundred dollars and Fridays were long lunch beer and pizza or Mexican or whatever. And come back in time to clean up and go home.
I have been working for myself for 13 years now after 16 as a union journeyman and over the years I've collected, acquired, bought almost everything I needed to start my business.
I have tool bags full of hole saws and arbors and boxes of sawzall and hacksaw blades and may tips and I get to know salesmen at the supply houses and some are shady making extra money on the side giving deals on tools and expendables. I have doubles and triples of all hand tools, some not even used. I've got a couple hundred feet of 6/4 temp cords and two distribution boxes, at least 1k feet of 20 amp twist Loc extension cords, I've got everything except power benders.

Ibosad on Amazon is $140 for a hydraulic up to 2”- it stays in my pack out base at all times with my core tools. Compact and light enough to always keep close. Won’t knock out an ATS or switchgear to 4” or anything but does 98% of what I work with day to day.

I have a hydraulic set that out performs the Milwaukee battery powered 10 ton set. Would still love to have that set, but I don't have the funds for it. The hydraulic isn't as fast, but when it comes to the thicker metals it actually does a better job because the tonnage on it is higher. And it only cost me about $400. My boss liked it so much that he bought himself the same set. He was more than impressed with it.

I actually like my old truck. Less to go wrong, easier to fix, and if the road is getting washed out, I can go right up against tree limbs and scratch the hell out of it. In regards to that tool, I'm a cheap bastard. But, if I'm up to the maximum amount of hours I want to work a week (whether that's 20 or 120), and the tool saves time, all it has to do is save enough hours over the life of the tool to more than pay for itself, and it makes logical sense to buy. Farming doesn't, so I don't buy tools like this, only what I need to run. :D

You DEFINITELY want to own a knockout set. Never look back afterward. I have the $50-$100 Amazon hydraulic. It is HEAVY and CLUNKY but it works like butter.
I finally learned to "step" the knockout. First one makes the hole for the larger shaft, second one does the big hole.
    * Factory knockout hole will fit the smaller shaft
    * Choose the knockout that's perfect for the bigger shaft
    * Do the big knockout
Doesn't take any drilling at all and you can offset the hole to just the spot where you want it.
I knock out plastic, nylon, aluminum, thin sheet metal, thick sheet metal, polypropylene, all sorts of stuff. Makes an absolutely perfect hole every single time with no effort and it seems to never wear out.
    Hole saws suck

Plus it's taking me about two weeks to unlearn how to drive that thing and actually drive my van again. And the worst part it only had Bluetooth can't hook up a cassette recorder over Bluetooth! Have to use Bluetooth with the phone but then you're downloading all your contacts into a vehicle you don't have control over and it's probably gonna suck out to Ford. I can't wait for the time with car stereos that's gonna happen like copiers you know those things just archive everything you copy nowadays because they're not securely erasing the hard drive. It's not worth 2 grand but it make the job easier and why do people use new compared to old $2000 and it will still break down on you and won't be a DIY fix
