From my perspective, Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh and Bahamaut are the core quad members of FF summons. Others can be cool, but they are mostly feeling like guests for that specific game (FF10 being a particular good example of unique awesome guests) But those 3 base elements + 1 non elemental being is just a core ingredient in making a final fantasy roster for any game.
I would add Titan, Leviathan, and Odin to that list. They may not be part of the standard three elements, but they've been around just as long, and their absences tend to be more notable than their inclusions. Alexander is a latecomer, but but has made its own niche in the group as well.
@ I mentioned Alexander! I don't think its as iconic as the other ones, but definitely i a smaller group of "second most iconic", since Alexander occurs a less often, but makes a big impression when it does.
Love to see a revision of the summons video's with FF16 Now out, I especially like the Ifrit designs of him in 16. But I'm also a sucker for summons that truly are monstrous looking
This is the best breakdowns I've always been wanting for ff summons. Perfection in every way and just tons of fascinating information. I love the dedication and respect for each franchise included in this video.
I fell in love with Ifrit upon first playing FFX. he may usually be a low tier summon, but he is absolutely without a doubt one of my most favorite eidolons to this day. it’s always fun to see him, and his FFX model goes above and beyond. those claws and that mane are just so fun, not to mention the way that he acts/moves like both a big, raging fireball and a reliable dog. what a cutie.
FF7 came out when I was in the 8th grade. I was afraid of Ifrit and afraid my mom would walk in my room and see him and I'd get in trouble. I distinctly remember selling the Ifrit materia on my first playthrough.
FFX looked marvelous. But the FFVIII has this really agressive noise when she finally launches the attack… I can still remember hearing it for the first time. (The original FF8, they altered it in the mobile and PS4 remasters)
While Ifrit being more humanoid in XV might be a big change within his own history, it's not strange among the Astrals, as Bahamut was changed in a similar way. Much weirder is that Leviathan wasn't given a humanoid form in XV!
To be fair, what would you do? I guess a mermaid? When you hear Leviathan, you think of giant underwater serpent usually. Kinda like in Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, what do you do about something named The Sun? It's kinda set in stone. Though I haven't played too many FF (7, 9, 10, 14, and 15) so if Leviathan is indeed a different form, I stand corrected.
@@xxAznToxin13xx Well, Leviathan's probably the classic FF summon who's changed the least since it was introduced in FFIII, but yeah I was actually thinking about how I'd answer that question, and taking the same approach that got us XV's Bahamut would have been my answer. Since XV's Leviathan's a she, a mermaid would've worked pretty well, with a long serpentine tail and clothing/armor that resemble the classic design. Maybe giant fin-wings, too.
@@xxAznToxin13xx Actually, now that I think about it, the painting in game depicting the prophecy of the King of Light already features Leviathan as a mermaid.
Since you’ve done Ifrit, logically Shiva or Ramuh would be next. After that, I’d go for Titan and Garuda, then Leviathan, then the summons leading up to the already completed Bahamut. But save Phoenix for last in case XVI comes out sooner than expected. Edit: Maybe merge Ixion’s appearances with Ramuh as the former appears on Ramuh’s staff and is the beastial substitute.
I'd like to see an evolution video of Carbuncle. It may not be a powerful summon, but it's usually freakin' adorable, and that's what matters to me. XD
In XIII im pretty sure carbuncle is the artificial sun inside cocoon. Pretty neat twist on something thats usually a healer now providing life giving sustenance in the form of sunlight :) Also i do love carbuncle in ff8 with the big floppy ears. adorable :D
Previously I saw some people's comment saying Ifrit in FFXV is the worst because he is not a demon beast like in other games, but for me, this version of Ifrit is actually more intimidating. And when his whole body is on fire, that's whole new level of badass..
Please do Odin next. He's one of the few summons who has been an integral part of the narrative for several games, especially in FFXI where he's ostensibly the true/ultimate villain , at least in some respects.
Ifrit, being a djinn, would be made of plasma (when asked about this, they were told to look at the bending light above a flame - that is the substance of djinn) which would make sense of the idea of them moving through walls. Like building a fire on one side of a wall and feeling the warmth on the other side.
The FFX versions of the summons--Aeons, as they were called in that gsme--will always be my favorites, especially Shiva, Yojimbo, and Bahamut. My favorite Ifrit though comes from FFXI.
Loved the video Daryl! Although not mentioned in the video, in FFXV, Ifrit and Shiva also had a deep connection. After watching this video, it makes more sense now seeing as the duo had connections in certain prior Final Fantasy games as well.
FfXVI ifrit is one of the most terrifying eons ive seen fight with Anima close… FFX Ifrit has my hearth, he seems like a warm friendlt beast instead of a killing machine..
Since the release of Shadowbringers, as of patches 5.2 and 5.5, there have been two other iterations of Ifrit: one conjured by the Warrior of Light's memories of Ifrit by the Sin Eater Eden, and Lunar Ifrit, created by the Ascian Fandaniel, conjured in one of his Telophoroi towers in Thanalan, by imprisoned Amalj'aa.
I overall really like the layout of this vid, with the image and various data on the right side and the game footage on the left, with the source given on the bottom. Overall looks very nice. I hope you intend to use this format for future videos. I also think the chronological look was an interesting way to tackle things, since it's easier to recognize the character's evolution after games influence what comes after. Also, a note on FF3 Ifrit's attacks - actually its second attack's translation is more like "Fire of Hell" and the third attack is "Flame of Hell". That's why the translators unusually called the second attack "Hellfire" and the third attack "Inferno", since those are two easy terms to mix up.
No way you finally did it!!! XD I've been waiting for this!!! Thanks for giving some love to my boy Ifrit! He is by far my favorite summon in final fantasy!

I personally will be THEE biggest fan of my number 1 summon video once you get around to him: Bahamut!🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿 Until then, I have nothing but absolute respect for what you've done and I look forward to more from you. Keep up the great work as it's very much appreciated.
i love these videos, they pop up in autoplay all the time and the summon ones especially i always let run. i would love to see a final fantasy that took eidolons such as ifrit, and gave story and context to improving them to become bahamut-level powerful for endgame content.

Just to give you some direction on Djinn. Djinn were created made from smokeless fire. Humans from clay. There are able to take many forms, and they are just like humans - some are malevolent and some benevolent
Even though I played FF9 for a long time, I didn't know how Ifrit looks like in the game because I don't usually use summons when I play FF. This is the first time I saw Ifrit's design in FF9. 😅😂
There's another iteration you are missing. In FF14 shadowbringers expansion, ifrit mixes with garuda for an ultra tough as nails fight. And they split apart to fight separately as more humanoid monsters.
you kinda missed the reimagined design of Ifrit in XIV Eden's Raid, where ifrit were more humanoid with masive horn. Ifrit also fight alongside Garuda (which is new) and even fused with Garuda to become new entity.
there is this new mechanic for ffbe called "zone effect" which makes espers elemental support more relevant, depending on what unit summons who, there is NV Terra who can summon iffrit (does not matter what lvl the esper is, just he exists in the team) to boost fire magic damage, NVA IF Rain can summon him in the same manner, but for physical fire damage boost, only one zone can be active, so it has some strategy of sorts to deal highest damage possible.
The Ifrit in "FF Brave Exvius" actually appears in a CGI LimitBurst attack alongside a different version of the main character Rain, called "Infernal Fire Rain". Plus all the Espers in "Brave Exvius" has 3 different animations based on what star level they are.
Excellent video! It was really interesting and I liked it a lot. Ifrit also appears in Final Fantasy Record Keeper as a boss battle and after as a summonable Magicite.
It may not be because mistranslations that the early games renamed Hellfire , Americans of the time really didn't like the word hell or any kind of perceived blasphemy being used in anything that they considered aimed at children. I remember reading about the reason that the God Gundam was renamed Burning Gundam in the dub, it was over some pearl clutcher's forcing Walmart to stop stocking the Deathscythe Hell model kits.
Give yourselves a nice pat on the back, FFU. Another great video! If we are sticking with summons, then how about doing an evolution of Lighntning-based summons: Ramuh, Ixion, Quezacotl.
Im sure im in a minority but i really loved the espers in FFXII.. The mystery surrounding them as fallen scions of darkness... And the designs are are just beautiful.. But i digress, Ifrit is badass especially in FFX
Great video, I forgot some of those ifirts. Definitely likes the new layout. When talking about the evolution, I do think chronologically makes the most sense. That we can see how it actually evolved. I'd say keep it going forward. But now I'm curious about the other two iconic summons Shiva or Ramuh.
Really great video! The only thing I know of that would have been cool to mention is Ifrit's use in the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game as a summon who deals damage.
I have something of an alternate suggestion, but how about a series on the ultimate summons from each game? Each holds some special story significance and they all have very different concepts.
Great work as always Darrel, thanks! Please, down the road make a Complete Evolution of Paladin-class video. Paladins are always my favourite class in FF games and i'd like to see a video about them.
Hey Oble, thank you for commenting! I'd recommend that you check out the video we did on Bahamut at the end of last year (th-cam.com/video/AOwT9SCh9b0/w-d-xo.html). It's not quite in the same format, but we still covered significant number of appearances!
On the topic of Ifrit in FFXI, I'm pretty sure Ifrit uses hellfire as part of Summoner's 2 hour ability which unless I've forgotten since it's been some time, unleashes the signature ability of the summon.
Loved the video! And saw a lot of different forms of Ifrit I didn't know were even a thing. I think Shiva or Leviathan would be cool ones to do if I'm just not forgetting if you have done those already.
Correction for the Final Fantasy 6 error. Inferno was not a result of a mistranslation. For the SNES release, Nintendo of America’s guidelines were very strict in regards to religious references. Very rarely would words like God or Hell be referenced. The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past was even called Triforce of the Gods in Japan. Words like Goddess only get though since they don’t reference the Christian god. Hellfire was likely removed due to referencing hell, and the PS1 version likely adopted the SNES translation.
Just gonna toss this out there: Ramuh could loosely be that Djinn connection you kept mentioning. Lightning being the main air-connected elemental attack in the franchise until the aero spell line got introduced, and Djinn being associated with the air as well.
I'm 99% sure the "mistranslations" of hellfire are very deliberate. As the English translations are designed for an american market, its really sketchy using the word Hell in anything (especially going back decades)
Yeah, we didn't see much of this in the UK because of the games flat out not coming out here, but anything religious used to be a big no-no for translated Nintendo games. The Zelda games were a much more subtle example of this.
Im guessing ifrit (Joshua) will be the final boss in XVI. Would be the climax for such a legendary summon that marked our childhoods. Can’t wait to see

I love this series! Ifrit is my favorite summon!
Gilgamesh is my favorite "villain" lol
My favorite version of Ifrit and other summons is Final Fantasy X
I love that Final Fantasy: Mobius looks the same way
