    I really enjoyed that ride with you David! About 45 years ago when I had hair down to my knees and looked like Jimmy Page, I shared a flat in Hampton Wick. I landed a job as a cleaner at the cinema in Richmond. I used to cycle from Hampton Wick to Richmond every morning at about 7 am… it was summer, mists rising off the river, swans skimming the surface… beautiful! Then home again just after lunch. Watching your ride brought back a lot of memories… thanks very much for that!
    Cheers, John

      Memories! The river is just as lovely now as it was then but it's very high at the moment. Life good in Australia?

      David Thorpe Life is very good in Australia… but I do miss the old country! My wife and I move backwards and forwards between Oz and the UK, so we get the best of both worlds. What interested me very much is Kingston Bridge and its surrounds, those steps where you began your ride I fell down when I was a kid, rolled from top to bottom! I used to fish at the end of a tiny alleyway by the tannery… what a pong! My father used to live on a converted ww2 landing craft just the other side of the bridge, more or less where the sea cadets building is. There used to be Turk's Boat Yard opposite, we would fish along a bit by the power station… it's all changed now though, as you know. But… that old river keeps on rolling along...

      Thank you for this.l used to walk along there regularly with my children.My family goes back in that area for at least 150 years.We moved away 34 years ago, l realised what a mistake that was, but were unable to get back.Such a unique area.

    What a lovely trip down memory lane David. I left Kingston over 30 years ago for Australia and this bought back a lot of great memories. Thanks. Now going to watch Kingston to Hampton Court.

    thanks, as said 'memories' I used to fish the thames in the 1960s and the ride brought back memories riding from Canbury Gardens. the banks were clear in those days, the power station used to put out hot water, which made the fishing superb

    Lovely trip down memory lane, I've been in Australia now for 40+years but fished along the towpath in Kingston, Teddington, Hampton Ct etc. etc. Worked in Richmond and also drank everywhere...Oh Yes ..'The Castle' in Richmond..more memories!
    THANKYOU

    we're planning a walk along the Thames Path to Richmond, this was really helpful in giving us an idea of what to expect, thanks!

      Glad it was helpful. Enjoy the walk. Ypoi probably know but if you cross Kigston Bridge, there's a lovely walk on the opposite towpath all the way to Hampton Court.

    This video takes me back to 1999 when I used to walk from Kingston to Richmond along the towpath, then onwards to Chiswick to meet a certain redheaded woman from her job. What we do for love, eh? Thanks for the video... and the memories!!! :O)

      Desmond Birch That's a long walk, she must have been special. Maybe you should have stayed in Kingston and let her do the walk :-)

      She sure was special. Alas, things didn't work out. Next month it will be 10 years since I last saw her. Ha! Ha! I agree David! :O) She was the one who had a car... but I was the one who walked!!! :oP

    Time to do another trip David, as you probably already know they’ve laid a new smooth path from Kingston to Richmond.
    You could now shoot on your G9 or GH5 . Let’s not wait for the GH6 ...
    Great little video, I ride it all the time, my favourite outing, and back through the park.

      I must take a look at that as soon as I can. Thanks for the heads up.

    You're near Richmond Park and Hampton Court Palace, too. Lots of excellent rides in the area including Box Hill at Dorking if you fancy a shot at the Olympic route. Have a great trip. Maybe you could bring some sunshine with you :-)

    That's nice. I don't think Kingston has changed that much since you left, though its hard to judge when you live there. It was always a great area for cycling, with the park and the riverside.

    @spogley I wonder what speed you usual get with your ebike. The eZip supports pedal assist till 15 max 18 km/h and there is no other otion to chose except the throttle, but throttle is overkill and takes all the pedalec fun away :-)) I am happy to have that little motor supporting me (specially in the beginning cycling again after 8 years) as we have quite a strong wind in the prairies 20 to 25 km/h that makes you feel going uphill even though it is straight :-))

    Hi David. Is the camera simply slung around your neck or are you using some sort of stabiliser are the vibrations are very few? Thanks.

  • @DavidThorpeMFT
    @DavidThorpeMFT  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm mostly in 6th or 8th(top) gear about 10 to 15mph. The last bit is only slightly uphill so anout 12-15mph

  • @DirkME1022
    @DirkME1022 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice Video and nice tour, also a great ebike the Kalkhoff Tasman ;-) What gear are you usual in on that video (okay it was bumpy but) and the last bit uphill, how fast did you go in what gear? Sorry for so many questions but I try to compare (if that would be possible) ;-) Thanks for sharing :-)

    Great comment Peter, thanks. The towpath hasn't changed much, I suppose but Richmond and Kingston have.

    Thanks, David. I've done part of this (in reverse) by bike every morning for the past five years, and often thought of filming it. Now, I don't have to !

      +Alexander G which reminds me, I haven't been that way for a bit. I like the stretch past the Wetlands bird place.

      +Alexander G Yes, I forgot to consider how much the river winds. Alwaya amazes me that Westminster Bridge goes East-West, not North-South.

    Great video, thanks. Are cyclists allowed to cycle along the River Thames on paths 'officially'?

    • @DavidThorpeMFT
      @DavidThorpeMFT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, towpaths are legally available to any vehicles other than powered ones. Electric bikes are OK because they are limited by law and are legally simply bicycles. Horses are OK too, I believe.

    I just cycle for fun, I'm not an enthusiast, I don't wear lycra or a helmet and I'm not trying to prove anything. On such a beautiful and scenic ride, why hurry?
    But, given you are not happy, apply to TH-cam and they will refund the money it cost you to watch it.

    Sadly for a lot f that ride you are on the footpath, not the expensive cycle track that was built for you.
