So, just my thoughts on the timeline, but I do find it intriguing how their assistant said that 'all TV repairmen are a part of the Spiritist movement' and they just so happen to stop at an electronics shop, supposedly without buying anything? They also had the directions for these mystery capsules written in a different handwriting in their journal and bought the bottle of water immediately after visiting this shop? Is it possible the owner of this shop was also involved as a Spiritist and was the one who gave them the pills and the directions on how to take them? They supposedly went directly there right after entering town, meaning it's most likely that shop was their primary destination all along... cadmium, barium, and various fluorescent powders are all present in old school CRT televisions, which would have been the type they were working on regularly and are all toxic, including what the electronics store owner would have had access to.
@@VelvetColt All the items I listed are radioactive at various levels and depending on the quantity, size and age of the items in question. Anyone who isn't familiar with how to handle them properly could absolutely find themselves running the risk of contamination. The levels of these they found in their hair is excessively low for any long term contamination to have happened, so I believe the men themselves were very careful; however, due to the decomposition of the bodies, any recent high level contamination that could have been caused by them ingesting them via those capsules likely wouldn't have been detected in the tissues, if they had any viable tissue where the capsules would have damaged after being ravaged by nature.
As someone who's had to do necropsy (as in non-human animals) and has been explained the bases of pathology, the digestive system decomposes very fast and contaminates the other systems. So if decomposition had already settled in by the time the bodies were reported then it probably was too late for any accurate toxicology report, plus maybe whatever they took wasn't in a pill format.
I was hoping someone from that background would clear this up for me, I'm a physiol/parma grad and could think of a few poisons that might not be found 3 days later. From what I know of poisons assays, they have to look for specific panel of known poisons (heavy metals being obvious candidates mentioned), yet there are many that would be broken down or confounded by decomposition products, and not leave specific evidence in organs. David Anspach above points out above about the additional possibility of the pair willingly acquiring experimental/tainted/poisoned psychedelics. Re, the pills: gelatin capsules would certainly break down very soon, gelatin is a part of normal foods, hence undetectable, esp after 3 days..
LSD is typically taken sublingually under the tongue or on it and absorbed directly in the bloodstream, there is tons of analogue research chemicals of LSD with similar effects that are very dangerous, and when you consider LSD is measured in MICROGRAMS and is undetectable in the system in a matter of hours.....it's understandable why nothing showed up on the toxicology report, especially decades ago when drug testing was much more difficult and less reliable and not as thorough as today. Even in modern times testing for LSD is almost impossible in most cases and the analogue research chemicals of LSD are almost untraceable.
This is an intriguing case. The most interesting part, to me, is the revelation that TV repairmen in 1960s Brazil apparently had their own religion, or at least all belonged to the same one.

I still tend to believe it was some sort of poison in those capsules. Considering that the bodies were found already in a state of decay, the poison could have simply also decayed or disappeared. Besides, arent there poisons that dissolve pretty quickly after ingestion and dont leave a trace even on tests? Interesting video as always, Reignbot!
Agreed! I also wonder if it may not have been poison per se but some other substance or drug and they, for lack of a better term, overdosed on it. Or it was one substance that was mistaken for another (I'm thinking of poisonous versus hallucinogenic mushrooms as an example). So testing for classic poisons wouldn't come up with results for that. If they intended to communicate with spirits, hallucinogenic substances are a pretty classic method, especially in the 1960s.
That was also my thought. Once the decaying process is at a certain state you don't even have enough tissue left to test. Stomach content is gone, blood is gone, vitreous humor (the liquid inside the eye) is gone. You can try to find stuff in the liver if it's been metabolized, but it's difficult. It might not even been negligence on the coronor's part, but just lack of resources.
There are a number of substances/chemicals that won't show up in the typical autopsy but would need to be specifically tested for, which most certainly makes things difficult.
THE big problem with poisonings, is that the tests commonly done for autopsies are only for the MOST common toxins... AND that's still a pretty narrow and short list of candidates, mostly comprised of "the usuals"... things like rat poison, organo-phosphate insecticides, and drain cleaner, along with arsenic, cyanide, and things that pretty much EVERYBODY knows has been used for murder or suicide or both before... The thing is, different poisons are tested for in different ways. Heavy metals can't just be tested "broadly" because some of them collect in the aminos and protein strands, like Selenium leaving white bands in the fingernails... and others attack the bones like the famous Radium destroyed the Radium Girls in the 30's and 40's... Meanwhile, if you're testing for metals, you might gloss right over Suxinocholine (spelled phonetically, because I can't remember that sh*t) which degrades fairly quickly and only seems to leave an elevated Potassium level... which is further complicated if the victim is "Potassium Deficient" which is a fairly regular condition... AND from Foxglove (aka Oleander, I think?) there's a chemical that works WONDERFULLY for heart medication if you have the appropriate heart condition... BUT for everyone without THAT very specific condition, it's deadly... and doesn't show up as one of "the usuals" either... Drug O.D.'s are possible, as are lethal interactions (yeah, READ those drug interaction sections on your next Pharmaceuticals run, and listen when the Pharmacist or Assistant warns you not to take certain things or eat certain foods. They're not kidding around)... It's also possible they were "flirting with disaster" as some folks try to bring themselves to the brink of death in hopes for a vision... and things just went wrong, thus explaining why they'd enlist a third person to clean up the scene, avoiding any secretive group being fingered... BUT just as easily, there are unscrupulous scammers who have no problem victimizing the slightly naive just for profit... It might seem like leaving any money would eliminate old-school greed and robbery as a motive, but then, scamming someone and just killing them in the woods to eliminate the witness accounts isn't so different from stealing... and it doesn't necessarily guarantee you haul ALL the cash, or maybe, just to throw off the investigation, even a "proper thief" would leave enough of a chunk of cash to deliberately eliminate robbery as a motive... Hard to say much of anything "Concrete" without a positive means of death... AND we may simply never know that. It's most likely poisoning, though we don't have any way to know what kind of poison... BUT that's not a guarantee, either... only the most likely thing. ;o)
there are most definitely poisons that rapidly decay and leave the body after doing their damage.. consider the cias "heart attack pistol", it used darts made of frozen shellfish toxin. the dart begins to melt as the poison enters the bloodstream and kills within minutes, leaving absolutely no trace.
The translation at 5:17 is slightly wrong. The note says "proteger metais aguardar sinal máscara", which means "protect METALS wait mask signal", and not cover half of the face with lead mask. Someone probably mistook "metais" (metals) for "metade" (half).
@@KanishQQuotes basically, in the 70s, the brazillian dictatorial goverment lauched a full scale military investigation on a string of UFO sightings and reports os mysterious lights that drained the lifeforce of whoever witnessed their passing
My first thought after hearing the sentiment that one might assume from the notes etc that they didn't intend to die, is that I can imagine one scenario where they may have... If this were some kind of Hale Bopp scenario, you know... like Heavens Gate, they had some plan to ascend to the mothership or vibrate into a higher dimension or, something
Also, after having spent a lot of time researching this case in as comprehensive of a manner as possible (like I tracked down Brazilian language sources to use for the bulk of my studty) and from what I understand there were more witnesses than just the child alone who saw the two men alive on the hill the day that the child also saw them. This case is very famous in Brazil and the man you cited is not the only person who has professed to having been involved in the case in the decades since. Hell, the confession might have come about as a result of the perpetrator confusing two men he robbed and murdered with the two men on that hill. In all likelihood he was just making it up. I think that they were two guys obsessed with spiritism and UFOology, as many people were in Brazil at that time, and that they ended up overdosing on something that wouldn't come up in an oridinary Toxicology test. Back then even in the U.S. if authorities wanted a person's body tested for a drug that wasn't part of the basic toxicology test that drug had to be specifically tested for -- -- that was most certainly the case in Brazil at that time period. Even to this day there are drugs which they tend to have to test for individually and there are also numerous others (mainly psychedelic drugs like LSD and all the various Shulginesque analogues and research chemicals) that are exceedingly difficult, if not outright impossible, to test for even in samples from a living person, nevermind a corpse. The permissive attitude about experimenting with different types of unconventional drugs was also found among young people in Brazil at that time and its not at all hard to imagine that two guys with the kinds of interests that these two men had would also be the sort who would be willing to try new types of drugs, especially if theyd previously taken LSD or something and had a positive experience. They way that they scheduled the time when they were to ingest those capsules is exactly the same way that two people who intend to use psychedelic drugs for a specific purpose (for playing music or some other activity that can be enhanced with certain drugs). Usually when people take LSD or other psychedelics with others they do so at the exact same time in the exact same headspace as you end up more or less sharing the same kind of trip. This is especially true with regard to how two close friends with similar passions and hobbies would use such a drug. I say this as someone who has taken LSD probably hundreds of times by now and that is exactly how I've used that drug whenever I'm doing so with friends: at the exact same time so we are on the same wavelength and having almost the same experiences to enjoy. I'm willing to bet they that they intended to buy something like LSD or Mescaline but were ripped off by someone who instead gave them either a drug or non-psychoactive chemical that ended up killing them, either via overdose or poisoning. The drug was either not individually tested for, was something that had a short half life, or it was a chemical that was also not individually tested for. This is the only conclusion that makes sense, it doesn't require one to reach or making numerous guesses and with all the available evidence and facts on the case point to that being the conclusion. Were this to happen today investigators would almost certainly have further tests for drugs that aren't part of standard toxicology tests once the first one came back clean.
Strange to me though, that they clearly ingested capsules previously in their itinerary and yet took one promptly before donning a protective mask. For what purpose would anyone wear a lead mask? Certainly not for a drug trip, how many drug trips can you imagine would be made better by a heavy mask, and why would they list it as a "protective mask"
@@VelvetColt You can't make presumptions about what people are going to want to do on a drug if they also have unusual beliefs that they have their own even stranger idiosyncratic interpretation of. I just finished spending most of my 20s living in New Orleans and absolutely any and everything you could possibly imagine is on the table as far as drugs go. "Certainly not for being on drugs," is one of the most common things people say before they find out that, in fact, whatever it was was /specifically/ for being on drugs
@@davidanspach1624 but surely since they've been doing these drugs for days, someone should have noticed OR at the very least, they would have attempted something similar for the first two doses listed? The instruction set makes it seem more preordained than just "a drug trip plan"
The note says: meet at the meeting place. So it's possible that a third party member prearranged the location by cutting the grass to make the spot "Obviously Clear"
Yeah due to those instructions were not written in their handwriting, it’s actually likely that Third Party gave it to them, and were the Snake Oil Salesman. They clearly exploited the Men’s beliefs in UFOS as excuses to get them to take strange pills that will make them “contact aliens” or something. Pill 1 and pill 2 were probably harmless and just given to build up trust. Pill 3 was definitely poison of some type. They were definitely told to take out sums of money so once they had unwittingly offed themselves, the Third Party can just walk up and take their money. The Lead Masks were probably for 2 reasons, to further build up trust, in making them think that they needed to shield their eyes from a Bright UFO. In reality the Masks were there so they could not see the Third Party coming while they laid there dying. It’s truly sad. I vaguely believe in aliens but these men were definitely just duped.
I have some personal connection to this case (sort of). I'm from Brazil. Back when I was in college one of my teachers told the story of when he was a young film maker and his team decided to investigate and make a documentary on this. They were harassed and targeted by some unknown group, their equipment was destroyed and their tapes taken as soon as they started to find information that wasn't public knowledge. He told the story about five years ago and he was still scared then, the only reason he brought it up was because he was telling the class about the problems he's faced with the career in the past. It's important to remember also that Brazil had gone through a dictatorship where many people disappeared or died mysteriously.
Grass dies when a body decomposes on or near it due to the body fluids high concentration of nitrogen, the grass will die where a body decomposes but will grow back after. I suspect that the whole the grass never grew back was just urban legend created by the locals. The grass died because of all that body fluid seeping into the ground killing off the grass, there were two bodies decomposing there next to each other which would make the nitrogen levels entering the ground even higher. So that explains the dead grass.
Also if a body lies somewhere long enough the grass under it gets no sun and potentially less water. So the grass is already weakened before the nitrogen gets to them
Nice cover on this story. Few people name the earlier lead mask case or even know it exists. The toxicology exam has good signs of being tampered with, I remember seeing a documentary that detailed a bit more the info. from the morgue and the "forensic mistakes" when the bodies were found by the police. Regarding the secret society bit, maybe we don't need to look too far. Just like the prominent and political figures associated with spiritualism there was a growing and strong popularity in spiritism and its promises among Brazilian politicians. You could cite a number of people who had ties with "spiritual power", the Brazilian president Fernando Collor being a popular one. Where there is powerful interests in Brazil, there is seldom evidence. I have to say that hearing Brazilian names being pronounced as if they wrere spanish throws me off a bit but I can understand that this can be unforeseen if you don't know about it. This case never ceases to amaze, good to see somebody digging it up again!
There is a very interesting story about aliens in Brazil, in the 60s a photographer from the countryside disappeared for a few days and reappeared, telling stories about where he was taken, describing technologies such as cell phones, video calls... He wrote a book telling his experience, this book can be easily found in PDF: Arthur Berlet, Os discos voadores.
Great research. I've heard this case on two other TH-cam channels. Yours presented new information. I had never heard of the earlier case, too similar not to include. Thank you!
I wonder if the COD could be Ergot poisoning? If the Men were taking a hallucinogen in an attempt to communicate with spirits, that would make a lot of sense.
re: dead grass I worked at a campus that used to be a US air force base during the Cold War. The military sold the property saying there was "absolutely no underground bunker" under the property (everyone low-key believes there is). Fascinatingly, they redid the landscaping of the property a few years ago, and one of the roads was turned into lawn, and now there are two rectangular patches of grass that die every time they are sod-patched and they never recover. Campus doesn't know why, but everyone assumes there's something radioactive under those two patches (probably in the bunker that doesn't exist). Just what comes to mind regarding the dead grass.
@@jakespacepiratee3740because what are they gonna do about it? Campus staff COULD get the material to do radioactive tests on those grass patches, but then what? They aren't swimming in cash for excavations The depressing reality is that even if you stumble on something big and exciting, there's really not much to be done about it (and "there might be a bunker under here" isn't honestly that exciting after an hour)

Forgot to add this when saw the video: I know it's a tricky language that seems a lot like spanish, but it is not (it's like saying french when you can only read italian - it's not the same and sounds weird). The lead masks imply that there could have been radiation exposure, as stated, so I'm wondering if the capsules were actually iodine? Many people will take iodine if it's anticipated that there will be such exposure.
I'm guessing they were targeted by a cult, playing on the radiation of "antennas". after missing most of their $10k, buying a car, my guess is that they were targeted by some sort of cult (cartel) that played on religion, and added the "science" mumbo jumbo on top of it. Being a radio specialist in a region poor of radio signal like south America kinda implies that you have some money. My theory is based on the fact that to this day radio towers in Guatemala are still being guarded by a on site guard with a shot gun. On top of that, last time I visited Guatemala (my home country) all I could hear is talk about spirits and money. Being raised in Norway I don't have any faith, and money is relative (I'm also poor here), but staying over there all I could hear was talk about "money" and "faith".
Iodine does not protect against radiation. Radioactive iodine is taken by those with thyroid tumors in order to target and destroy the thyroid gland. IV iodine is also used as a contrast medium during CT scans, to help make the blood vessels more visible in the CT scan images. It does nothing to protect from radiation (CT scan exposes a person to a lot of radiation).
I find it surprising that the electronic shop owner at 2:11 wasn't considered as being possibly implicated in whatever happened. Just seems a bit odd that they'd enter it to talk with the owner and exit with no recored purchases, with the shop owner likely being connected to their line of work, and then afterwards go off to do the rest of whatever they were planning. Seems like a likely source for the capsules that they supposedly would've taken.
great video as usual reignbot! though as a side note, and not to sound rude because this is extremely common, i'd suggest looking up how to pronounce names of people/places in portuguese instead of defaulting to a "spanish" pronounciation because there's some pretty big differences and it sounds a bit jarring 😅 (eg: "chico xavier" is pronounced not like "chee-co havier" and instead like "sheeku shaviehr")
I like this video. I especially like the voiceover work, well done. I'm currently producing an audiobook of Dr. Jacques Vallee's book Confrontations, which dissects this case in minute detail. Vallee visited the site and interviewed all of the witnesses. It should be ready in January.
Too bad that ReignBot has to have a real life out there like the rest of us as I could watch her fascinating videos 24/7. I get that notification on my phone and I can’t wait to see what scary thing she has for us.
the translation of the note has missing pieces. the second part is (roughly) "take the capsule, then after it's in effect, protect metals, wait for signal, then put on the masks".
Miguel “I’ve been thinking about these masks and yellow overalls. Is it ok if we get radiation everywhere else besides our eyes? Or is the idea we die slowly of lead poisoning?” Manuel: “I don’t know. I thought the aliens may appreciate the ‘Breaking Bad’ reference.” Miguel “This is the past what’s ‘Breaking Bad’?”
I'm brazilian and highly critical when it comes to my country being talked about by foreigners, you and Nick Crowley are the only people that do their research properly. Thanks for being respectful and showing accurate information about spiritism 🙌
I wonder if the device they made that ended up burning up had toxic metals within it and when it caught flame it released a gas that killed them. It would explain why the bodies had no ingested poison or physical damage. The toxic metals could also have sunk into the soil and killed the grass?
So you're saying on 2 different occasions 3 people total in the same profession were found on a hill d3ad with the lead stuff over their eyes. Yeah that's not odd.
Mary Todd Lincoln never got over the loss of her child which is the reason for the seances. Had she not lost her child, I don't believe she would have been doing that.
Personally, I think someone took advantage of these men who were desperate for supernatural answers. The big thing about the supernatural, be it spiritual, alien, or otherwise, is that we know next to nothing about it. I think these men were fooled into taking intricate steps (which in the pursuit of something so unknown it would make sense to them) and having to bring "financial compensation" for this answer to everything they wanted to know. The lead masks I believe were also a ruse, but also a clever way of hiding their eyes once they died. Lead is heavy so it would be difficult to remove from the face by wind or other natural forces. Typically the eyes stay open after death, which is an immediate giveaway something is wrong when someone comes across someone else with that "dead stare". They were possibly given placebo pills prior to buy into the illusion of steps to reach their supernatural answers, and the final pill would be the final buildup to get that answer. However, the final pill would not be a placebo, but a poison that killed swiftly. Being dead for three days is plenty of time for a toxin to dissipate, and being told to sit on a hill away from prying eyes is a great way to ensure it would be the case.

That sounds more like getting rid of the undesirables and covering it with crazy stories
100% what I thought especially when I saw the notes
I just finished spending most of my 20s living in New Orleans and absolutely any and everything you could possibly imagine
is on the table as far as drugs go.
Makes the most sense I've heard yet. Kudos!
That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the comment!
I feel like there's a huge cover-up somewhere here, whether that be a government one or some other unknown group
Yeah thats the thing brazil is a weird nation though
Época da ditadura era foda msm
seria muito interessante se você pudesse falar mais sobre a investigação que seu professor participou e os detalhes das ameaças que receberam
It's like that anywhere in this world
Grass dies when a body decomposes on or near it due to the body fluids high concentration of nitrogen, the grass will die where a body decomposes but will grow back after.

This must be one of the most misterious brazilian cases

re: dead grass
I worked at a campus that used to be a US air force base during the Cold War.
What's the name of the campus

Forgot to add this when saw the video: I know it's a tricky language that seems a lot like spanish, but it is not (it's like saying french when you can only read italian - it's not the same and sounds weird).
An example: the "x" is actually pronounced like "sh", not "h". So Xavier would read like Shavier, not Havier.

Would poison even show up in hair if it was a single lethal dose? I was under the impression that a hair test would only be applicable in a longer term poisoning.

They were possibly anti radiation capsules they took. It would fit in with the lead glasses
They were UFO nuts who took heavy drugs to "see" spirits. They apparently thought that when the aliens arrived there would be a blinding light, hence the lead glasses. They were wearing suits I'm guessing cuz they wanted to look good when the martians arrived lol

@@svampebob007 Wow. That's really interesting!
Ooh excited for this!!
17:50 you mean “raise the question” not “beg the question”
great video as usual reignbot! though as a side note, and not to sound rude because this is extremely common, i'd suggest looking up how to pronounce names of people/places in portuguese instead of defaulting to a "spanish" pronounciation because there's some pretty big differences and it sounds a bit jarring 😅 (eg: "chico xavier" is pronounced not like "chee-co havier" and instead like "sheeku shaviehr")
They always do that, they know it's portuguese but then they go and pronunce like spanish, that's just ignorance
I like this video. I especially like the voiceover work, well done. I'm currently producing an audiobook of Dr. Jacques Vallee's book Confrontations, which dissects this case in minute detail. Vallee visited the site and interviewed all of the witnesses. It should be ready in January.

Could be, but the question is : why ?
I want to watch this video but I had to turn it off because 70% of the visuals being off center and cut up was not working in my brain
