Hi, I have the same problem with error code 500. (Drive unit BDU-290P - Performance line speed) I cycled 9,600 km. Isn't it sometimes hidden in the software to force the drive to be replaced around 10K km? Generally, the engine still works and the error appears after a break in pedaling. If you maintain even gentle pressure on the pedals, you can travel up to 20 km. Could you describe what was the cause for you? The service claims that the entire engine needs to be replaced. It's absurd to replace the entire engine every season! Regards.

I am stunned that the circuit board is not encapsulated, it’s wonderful that you are showing us the pull down, I noticed that there is very little info like this on the internet.
Very good video, clear naration, good video and no annoying background music. Within minutes of watching, I asked myself, how can these expensive motors be manufactured with inadequate water protection. Sealing a shaft exiting a casing is mastered by thousands of applications such as motor vehicles, boats, kitchen and laundry appliances etc, so this is a complete manufacturers defect. The seal design needs to be revisited, as this these EMTB motors should be impervious to rain, puddles and creeks etc. The manufacturers should be reparing these free of charge.
Thanks for your kind words. I am not defending the manufacturers here but if you look at the evolution of these motors, they were first used on road bikes and can normally cope with the odd puddle and a wash down with bucket and sponge. The odd failure would have been negligible. It was the cycle manufacturers who decided to try these motors in mountain bikes, possibly with the manufacturers blessing? I don't think either party fully understood the amount of abuse and heavy cleaning an MTB goes through. There is a silver lining to all this. The motors coming through now, are being better sealed. I am sure the issues we are seeing now will be a thing of the past.

Just serviced mine - thanks for the great vid. You’re right, the trickiest bit is reinstalling the shaft and gear assembly behind the circuit board. Just ordered more bearings and a mudstop flange from you tonight!
I think you've just saved me thousands of £'s. Been seriously considering buying an electric full suspension mountain bike. But after seeing this I think I'll continue to grind away without the aid of a motor. Even my non electric mountain bike has 8 bearings in the frame, that need replacing every couple of years. Add all the bearings in a motor and it's going to get very expensive just to maintain very quickly. My knees are going to have to go without the assistance of a motor for a few more years I think.

Excellent video- I've just bought a KTM with CX, I'll take as best care that I can with it but great to see how the internals strip down and what's involved...Looks like my manky shed would not be the place to do a job like this and without a press and the tools!! Thanks!
I have an E-bike with a performance CX motor too, after watching this one I started thinking my bike made quite a bit of noise too. It's like when you read about someone having some awful disease you start feeling the symptoms too. I think this video makes the motor sound too quiet after it's fixed, it's Hard to judge noise from a video. The noise my bike makes seem to mostly come from the gears inside the motor. The pedals still feel silky smooth when you rotate them, but the motor does seem noisier than this one does after it's fixed. I knew about this issue from the start (probably from watching this video a year ago) so I've avoided water like the plague with this bike, it's never been washed, never been used when it's wet. A couple of times it started raining lightly when I was a couple of km away from home. I doubt I've ever gone through a single water puddle. I'm guessing if you get this issue you would see a difference in how long the battery lasts, because of the extra friction.
Great comment atnfn. Believe it or not, that motor sounded a lot quieter in real life than it did on the video! If your motor is noisy, there will be a reason for it. Firstly, don't be afraid of the rain or water. Enjoy and clean your bike, just don't direct water under pressure at the bearings and your motor will be fine. If your motor is noisy and your crankshaft rotates smoothly, it maybe a broken crankshaft gear circlip, this allows the crankshaft gear to rub against the transfer gear and the motor sounds excessively noisy. If you send it to us in the UK, I would be happy to quieten it for you.

What a great video, thank you very much for this excellent job, would not buy a e-bike with this kind of motor, years ago the name of Bosch was quality this time seems to be over.
This is one reason why i never wash my bike . i brush and vacuum dirt and mud off . The other reason is the dust and dirt and scratches act as a bit of a theft deterrent. It’s the flashy super clean bikes that get nabbed first . I keep my chain lubed and brakes and gears clean but the frame is filthy .
Obviously the damage was caused by infiltration of water. Bosch is regarded as the most reliable motor but it seems like they only tested the motors in the factory.

I got a friend who has done 6000 commuting miles on his CX motor and it sounds as good as the day he got it. wonder how many miles this motor had done?
You have a good point Mark. If these motors are used on road in relatively clean environments they will run and run, just as a standard peddle bike will. When you get them in a mountain bike and use them off road in wet, dirty environments they can suffer, again, just as a standard mountain bike does. This motor had not done big miles, but had seen a lot of water!
Turns out I sent this video to my mate yesterday and asked him if he had ever had any servicing done to his motor and he said none at all and wasn't aware that it needed servicing ever lol But as you said this motor has seen a lot of water and hard water! IMO any well known brand mid mounted motor is good for at least 10 years in normal road conditions. These motors are very new technology and I do wonder what the life span / mileage range of them will be. I'm running an Active Line Plus motor myself with 2k on the clock and it has been fantastic, never missed a beat. But again, I only do normal road riding. Thank you for your reply :)
I wonder why they put the mechanical componets right next to the circuit board? If they separated them they coud run all the bearings in an oil bath and all of the componets would last much longer in my opinion. Or maybe some better outside seals?
It's a good question and although oil is extra weight and cost, better seals should have been fitted. But basically, when these and indeed most ebike mid drive motors were conceived, they were primarily designed for road bikes and as road bike motors, they suffered relatively few failures. A few years later when manufacturers started putting the motors into mountain bikes they underestimated the abuse they would undergo or the conditions they would see on a regular basis. Ebike motor manufacturers are giants and for things to change, it can't be done overnight (a bit like turning a supertanker round). However, things are changing and a lot of the newer motors are better sealed, so maybe in a few years, I will be out of business!
The only O-rings that seal anything are between the crankshaft and the crankshaft bearings, and to be honest, they are predominantly there to stop the bearing spinning on the crank. Because water can sit in this area and rust the bearing to the crankshaft, I usually smear some water resistant grease around this area. We tend to fit the double lip rotary seal between the crankshaft and the sprocket carrier, this protects the right-hand crankshaft bearing completely. Then we fit the MudStop to protect the main motor bearing. We have a seal for the left side under development and it should be ready before winter.
Happy new Year to all of you.I love your videos, they are so helpful and your explanations are superb. I have a problem with a bosch performance line cx and i would love to get advice from you: gear makes unknown noises although the drive works. I believe the bearings are okay. In this case it is usually the electric motor brass gear has worn or the electric motor bearings are failing. Easy test is to ride faster than 15.5mph or 25kph and when the motor cuts out you should hear a big difference in noise. If not, please email me and we can discuss further. www.ebikemotorcentre.com
Hello Pete Collard, first of all I have to compliment your videos. The individual steps are explained very well and are also well illustrated. When can we expect a video for the Bosch Drive Unit Performance CX Generation 4 (bearing swap)?
The Bosch Gen 4 is a very different motor to work on. It's more complex, special tools are required, there are a couple of parts that are extremely easy to break, and everything must be done in a very particular way or you will have problems. When we see the mess many people make of repairing the Gen 2, we are reluctant to encourage them to have a go at the Gen 4.
@@Ebikemotorcentre Thanks for the answer! I have one more question, do you have to re-register the motor after connecting the electrical plugs? Thank you in advance
Three things: I would like to know what the owner did to get the motor in that condition? Secondly I wouldn't be taking my damaged motor anywhere eise but here.. Thirdly that component board looks like a weak link and should have been replaced... Of course that would have needed to be sourced..
1, This is quite common unfortunately. Usually, hose, pressure washer, deep ford or flood, transporting behind a vehicle on wet roads without the motor covered, etc. 2, Thank you 3, The board is programmed to the electric motor angle, so not as easy to replace as it sounds + the can-Bus software is a little tricky too. We are working on a fix for the board as we speak :)

My Cannondale had a noisy motor from new, it wasn't until my mate got his LaPierre with the same Bosch motor I realised how bad mine was. 300 odd miles I had on it and it was replaced free with a new one, perfect, apparently there is a 2 year warranty on them and it starts again on a replaced motor ?
I have an electric bike with a small hub motor which had nylon pinion gears which I swopped out for metal ones . cost 30 euros ..... no other problems with bearing or anything in nearly five years...... this Bosch unit seems ridiculously complicated and the repair looks seriously expensive ........ very glad I don't have one !!....... How much was it ?????????
A few years off road, through rivers dust, dirt, over rocks and tree roots and constant cleaning. Not to mention climbing 1 in 2 gradients, pedal strikes etc. I reckon they do alright.
How important it's to use the right grease for these motors. I'm using blue grease. Before I use to used white grease synthetic but it doesn't last too much
The right grease is generally critical. The wrong greases can affect the plastic gears, can cause the clutch bearings to slip, damage seals and O-rings etc. For example, using an aluminium based grease with a lithium based grease, will turn the lithium grease back to oil, and then it will just run off of the parts it should be protecting. The genuine Bosch grease is readily available and does a fantastic job.
Muy bueno tu canal, congratulations!!! Tengo el motor Bosch performance line cx del 2018 que está pidiendo un cambio. Me podrías decir de algún sitio donde poder comprarlo??
Good video, not simple to change the bearings at all. Surprised at water ingress into these? Are the latest builds better, I’m just getting one? I’ll send it to you for service, how many miles generally before a service is required?
No, changing the bearings is not something you want to do in your shed! Don't panic, the Bosch motor is an excellent motor and very high quality compared to some. The later builds are the same as the early builds, but the water in this one was caused by the last person who worked on it. Sometimes, when you re-fit the right hand motor cover, there is a dowel (peg) at the top and bottom of the motor that align the cover up with the gasket face and screw holes. The dowel at the bottom of the motor can stick and once all the screws are done up and feel tight, there can still be a big gap between the case and the motor underneath. If this gap is not spotted, water can flood into the motor!
I have Bosch active line plus basically brand new bike and motor starts giving annoying noise... Probably bearings are bad. I cannot use warranty because I bought it used from second hand ... It's very annoying.
Fascinating, thank you 🙏 personally I’m surprised these don’t run in an oil bath with a sump… I realise the electronics might not like that but auto gear boxes on cars seem to cope with valve bodies running solenoids and wiring, and I believe, possibly wrongly, some electronics? But at least if there was water ingress the oil could be changed. Plastic cogs? To stop harshness I guess but that can’t be good. Metal powdered cast gears instead? …anyway any Shimano motors in? I see they keep cracking crank shafts to crank arms falling off…?
Hi Pete, I have a Bosch Performance Line CX, and a few days ago it began to make a noise, mostly on emtb o turbo mode but only at climbing.... Similar to a coffee grinder. How can I know the kind of bearings or kit I need to replace? Thanks a lot
The “coffee grinder” noise is usually the first sign that the main motor bearing is failing. As your bike is 2018, it should be covered under warranty. As your bearing has failed so soon, this normally points to an issue with water getting into the bearing? This maybe from a deep-water crossing, hosing/pressure washing the bike around the crank area etc. You can normally confirm if it is only the main motor bearing by removing the chain from the front sprocket and turning the pedals. You will hear the bearing while pedalling forward, when you pedal backwards, you are then listening to the crankshaft bearings. Either way, if this is something you want to fix yourself, I would leave the motor in the bike, remove the right hand crank arm and sprocket, remove any plastic motor covers and then remove the right-hand motor cover, you will then be able to see and feel all the bearings and ensure you get what you need. Or, you can send your motor to us for repair. I hope this answers your question?
Was a great video and much appreciated. Couple of questions as I feel it could just leak again. No smear of grease on the bearing outers or seats before you pressed the bearings in? Makes bearings easier to remove in the future. Looks like water has got to that circuit board covering those electrics with liquid electric tape or corrosion x oil which is safe for electrics would be wise as this waterproofs the board. Would definately no matter what the seal looks like add some silica sealant around the housing as obviously water has got in there and I would be adding a good layer of grease on the outside of bearings to help stop water. It's pretty poor to have water enter an outfit like this I have a bafang motor on a fat bike that has been through a lot of deep water fully submerged and has had no ingress. Looks like the Bosch motor could do with a pre service before use. I. Looking at getti g one so will strip it down from new and redo seals.
This motor was pressure washed so hopefully, would not suffer the same fate again but I get your point. If we service motors in our workshop, they all get a smear of waterproof grease on the outer face, it makes no difference for later removal and does not last 5 minutes on the bearing seal, but it does help with any gap between the bearing and motor case, stopping water or debris entering this space. The printed circuit board is already quite robust and thinly coated. Also, with little fresh oxygen within the motor any corrosion is very slow and can normally be easily removed. Normally, if the board has been wet enough to cause problems, the rest of the motor will also be badly damaged and is usually scrap. I have never known a motor cover seal leak yet? So adding silicone to something that does not need it seems a bit of a waste? It also makes future removal of the cover more difficult and time consuming. Fortunately, we now offer seals for the outer bearings on the drive side of the motor and have a seal in prototype for the left side. Personally, I would not buy any current ebike mid drive unit if you want to take it under water. I would stick with your Chinese one because it will be cheap to replace 👍

Dear people, what is the cause of the ticking or clicking noise I here when putting some pressure on the pedals? Its obviously produced in the crankshaft though.

It is not possible to remove the plastic gear from the boss without damage. We do sometimes get good condition gears for sale, but they are rare. Have you spoken with our German partner www.ebike-doktor.de he maybe able to help?
Seems not very sturdy, this motor. Some of the comments below state not that much mileage before overhaul needed. Glad I still have my rear motor e bike, no troubles at all after 10K + miles in all weather.
Do you ride off road with your hub motor, through rivers of water over 300mm deep? Ride through constant deep mud, grit, sand etc. do you wash your hub motor after every ride? Any hub motor I have seen treated the same as a mid drive motor fails in the same way. We have been doing hub motors for some time now and bearing failure is as common on them as mid drive motors if they are abused. We also see hundreds of mid drive motors used in road bikes through all weathers with 30,000 to 50,000 miles and no problems. Again, as I always say, I am not sticking up for these motors, but sometimes a like for like evaluation puts things in a different light.
We had some manufactured because although they have a standard designation number, they are not a standard size! If you need bearings for your Bosch motor, check out our website www.performancelinebearings.com
Do your research, I am sure you would be happy with either one. All UK bikes are restricted to 15mph though. You would need to fit a de-restrictor (illegal in the UK)
Yes, the Brose has a free wheel drive that lets you pedal without turning the electric motor. The Bosch drive is geared so each turn of the pedals equals 2.5 turns of the crankshaft, this makes it hard work.
The Bosch feels like it hit pocket of sand when max assist speed is reached. As this is exactly the speed range you want to commute at I find this disconcerting and it takes all the fun out of it for me. Legal consequences of derestrcting are not to be sneezed at, mind you.
We use Bosch Drive Unit Grease inside the motor and Bosch Long Life "Tacky" Grease outside the motor. You can see these here: www.ebikemotorcentre.com/bosch-gen-2/

Hi, I have a question. I bought a service pack. Engine block with bearings and gears. I drove 8000km. So a lot of noise, will. After installation, however, it is a bit more stiff. Do you think this is normal?
Yes, perfectly normal. The last batch of Bosch motor service covers have all been slightly tight. Don't worry, this tends free up after a few hundred miles / kilometres.
Hi! My motor started seizing up occasionally. The pedals will just stop and i have to backpedal to break the seize. There is no strange noise at all and everything else seems healthy. I installed lights recently and im thinking i might have overtightened the crank arm when putting back and then breaking the lock-ring on the inside. Do you have any other good idea? Whats the chance of me finding the actual fault if I open up and look around?
Over tightening the cranks shouldn't cause the issue you have. Do you feel any vibration through the pedals? Can you hear any noises? Have you suffered a pedal strike recently?
@@Ebikemotorcentre nope. No issues apart from the pedals seizing three times. Well. Atleast i cant hear anything obvious now. But I do have winter tyres with studs on. @@tydlig You can see from my pictures (Haibike Rider) in that post, the snapped inner crankshaft circlip. There are three of these on the crankshaft inside the motor and any one of them can fail. When this happens small bits will be floating around inside the motor and could jam a gear? If this happened though, it would be fairly shocking and I would be surprised if it would clear with a back pedal, but you never know? @@Ebikemotorcentre Thank you for your quick anwser. To my suprise and releaf the sound was gone this morning. But I will get it checked anyway, official servis is nearby. I tried to start it twice, both time same sound and then just left it to dry through the night.
All the moving parts within your motor run on bearings, so squeaking is not common. First, I would remove the chain from the front sprocket and turn the pedals forward and backwards. This will eliminate the drive train, and pushing the crank arms forward and backwards uses different bearings and may narrow down where your squeak is coming from? Good day, I am writing from Ukraine through a translator. I have one question, I have a bosh gen 2 performens lain CX motor, I found a small shat on both sides of the shaft. Like an ordinary one, when the carriage is broken a little. Is it necessary to dismantle the motor to replace the bearings?
What is the average age of the bosch cx before it needs rebuilding? Thinking about getting the 5 year warranty but it's $537.00 US. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
This depends massively on so many different variables that it can't really be quantified. The length of time a motor normally lasts depends on riding style, riding terrain, bike cleaning habits and equipment, countries climate and weather conditions (wet or dusty), how you transport your bike and how you store your bike etc. If you jet wash your bike for example the warranty would be an excellent choice because your motor may last as little as 100 miles. If you ride on the road, keep your bike in a warm garage and wash it occasionally, it could last over 50,000 miles (at which point you would probably have sold the bike and bought a newer model). This is a question I am asked a lot, but sadly, it's very tricky to answer.

hi, i changed bearing but now it gives me error 500, any idea what i did wong?
Did you put the small clutch bearing round the right way? Is the gear that holds the small clutch bearing cracked? Did you knock a component off the printed circuit board? Did you use the wrong grease on the clutch bearings? did you set the torque sensor angle back to where you found it? Did you re-connect the torque sensor? Did you trap the torque sensor wires? I could go on all day like this, but these are some of the more common things we find.
If you are spinning the pedals backwards, this is normal. If you are spinning the pedals forwards, look at the aluminium boss that the front sprocket is attached to. This can wear and allow the motor to spin without turning the sprocket and chain.

I'd love to have the confidence to tackle this myself but some things are best left to the professional engineers....HIGHLY recommend PLB....
Outstanding video! Wow. I just learned so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your presentation style is the best, keep up the great work!

A very detailed video and excellent demo on a complete overhaul of a CX motor. I know where to come in the future! Many thanks.
Just serviced mine - thanks for the great vid. You’re right, the trickiest bit is reinstalling the shaft and gear assembly behind the circuit board. Just ordered more bearings and a mudstop flange from you tonight!
Yes, wow.....excellent video by a gentleman who really knows what he is doing. Thank you!
Excellent video Pete iv got a performance line Moyer a moustache friday27bought two years ago Moyer sounds great I’ve done 6,000miles hope it keeps going
Questo video è eccezionale e mi è stato molto di aiuto per sistemare i cuscinetti del motore , senza questo video non mi sarei azzardato a metterci le mano, GRAZIE GRAZIE GRAZIE.

Excellent video- I've just bought a KTM with CX, I'll take as best care that I can with it but great to see how the internals strip down and what's involved...Looks like my manky shed would not be the place to do a job like this and without a press and the tools!! Thanks!
very grateful for people like this
Your videos are giving food for thought as I look to buying a used ebike. Avoid grinding and gritty motors.
I bet this video is in real time. Skilled worker at work!

Thats magic to make out of a coffee grinder a motor for an e-bike
What a great video, thank you very much for this excellent job, would not buy a e-bike with this kind of motor, years ago the name of Bosch was quality this time seems to be over.
Don't worry, the quality was there, just the sealing wasn't. However, this has been rectified to some extent on the latest motors.
Really appreciate this video. I don't know anyone in the states doing this.
Great job you make, Thanks for this video I have all tools so i hope I need this in a distant future🙂
Very good. Congratularions.
Obviously the damage was caused by infiltration of water.
Bosch is regarded as the most reliable motor but it seems like they only tested the motors in the factory.

Muy buen video, explica claramente la forma de reparar el motor Bosch. Aqui en Republica Dominicana nadie sabe hacer algo asi y todos los dias hay mas bicicletas con motor Bosch aqui.. Buena oportunidad de negocio...
Good to see what’s inside these motors..Bike shop told me these are water proof. Pfft.
Thank you. Most instructive. I did wonder (due to water getting inside before) how much sealent & silicone lubricant you would use in the "O" rings.
I allso wrap to thin strips of plastic bag around the cranks . Stops water getting in when washing
Happy new Year to all of you.I love your videos, they are so helpful and your explanations are superb. I have a problem with a bosch performance line cx and i would love to get advice from you: gear makes unknown noises although the drive works. I believe the bearings are okay. I suspect that the first tooth ring causes problems, even though all teeth are present. I stand ready to answer further questions and would be so grateful for your help. Thx in advance, Heijo.
@@rolfkronjager4228 No.
@@Ebikemotorcentre Thank you!
Three things:
I would like to know what the owner did to get the motor in that condition?
Secondly I wouldn't be taking my damaged motor anywhere eise but here..
Thirdly that component board looks like a weak link and should have been replaced... Of course that would have needed to be sourced..
1, This is quite common unfortunately. Usually, hose, pressure washer, deep ford or flood, transporting behind a vehicle on wet roads without the motor covered, etc.

Great vid, but IMO it's quite shocking that tiny electric circuits and chips are that close to gears and grease - with no cover or protection.
Good work!
Great job buddy 👍🇬🇧
Thanks..will be careful washing my bike in the future....
@@Ebikemotorcentre interesting thanks. Got mine now, hopefully will last otherwise it'll be coming your way one day

Changing all bearings. Thank you
Hello, you can find our costs here: www.ebikemotorcentre.com/repair-overhaul-upgrades/
@@Ebikemotorcentre thank you.
I have thought about the oil too, I would like to build a motor like this...One day maybe.
Hi Pete just fitted one of you right hand bearing kits thank you for the quick delivery, I am also going to order a left hand crank arm drive bearing from you for my other bike, question for you why don't you unplug the torque sensor out of interest and just have it hanging loose.

It is not possible to remove the plastic gear from the boss without damage. We do sometimes get good condition gears for sale, but they are rare. Have you spoken with our German partner www.ebike-doktor.de he maybe able to help?
Nice job

Hello, where did you buy one of these bearing pullers? by 36.30
36:30 is the end of the video?
Im stuck with going for a bike with either a Bosch motor or a Brose, i need reliability and 20mph
Do your research, I am sure you would be happy with either one. All UK bikes are restricted to 15mph though. You would need to fit a de-restrictor (illegal in the UK)
1200Pete i have and Brose lets motor smooth change when reach above 15.5 but Bosch is sudden
I can’t believe that there isn’t any seals on the ends of the shafts to stop water and dirt from entering the bearings. Or did I miss something ?
No, you spotted the issue :) This is why we supply the MudStop and crankshaft seal to help keep water and debris out of the motor.

@@tydlig You can see from my pictures (Haibike Rider) in that post, the snapped inner crankshaft circlip. There are three of these on the crankshaft inside the motor and any one of them can fail. When this happens small bits will be floating around inside the motor and could jam a gear? If this happened though, it would be fairly shocking and I would be surprised if it would clear with a back pedal, but you never know? @@Ebikemotorcentre Thank you for your quick anwser. To my suprise and releaf the sound was gone this morning. But I will get it checked anyway, official servis is nearby.
About the sound, I would describe it a small coil whine with an abrupt thump sound at the end, very short, maybe a sec or 2. I tried to start it twice, both time same sound and then just left it to dry through the night.
My motor is squeaking when I manipulate the cranks. Any idea why? The cranks don’t seam to have any play.
Espectacular!
Hello whats the problem can be when i spin pedals chain is not moving or barley moving when no resistence
If you are spinning the pedals backwards, this is normal. If you are spinning the pedals forwards, look at the aluminium boss that the front sprocket is attached to. This can wear and allow the motor to spin without turning the sprocket and chain.
