I am happy to hear that final note about grumpy Malcolm finally being satisfied with his son's struggles. I am under the impression that poor Donald spent his whole life seeking his father's approval. Poor devil, he made something great but was always haunted by his father. History did him justice. Finally.

I read 'Bluebird and the Dead Lake', about the Lake Eyre fiasco, at the age of 15 when it was first published, and I got a bad feeling about Donald Campbell from it. I got the impression of a man so driven to prove himself a match for his father that one day he'd overreach himself and come to a sticky end. Years later I discovered that Sir Malcolm, who was more than a bit of a bastard, had habitually put his son down, along the lines of 'You'll never be the man I am.' Notice how in both photos of Donald with his father, at the beginning and again at 0.42, Malcolm is smiling and Donald isn't?
I vividly remember how I was having my tea in front of the television on that day in January 1967, when the evening news began. As soon as the footage of Bluebird hurtling across Coniston came on, without pause for thought I said aloud, 'He's killed himself.'

As always a wonderful and well researched video by Scarf and Goggles. Donald Campbell was a very courageous man especially after his high speed accident in the USA. The only man to hold the land and water records at one time. His like will never be seen again. RIP Donald.

I stumbled on your videos a few months ago and I don't know I've ever commented how much I enjoy the content and information in your videos. The speed with with these records were being broken so early in the 20th century never ceases to amaze me.

With a gut feeling like he had, he lost trust in the ability of his machine, he must have realised the massive undertaking he was trying to achieve, pushing himself and machine so much, so hard and far,

Remember as a young boy hearing the news of Donald's fatal accident and over the years feel that he was always overshadowed by his domineering Father when,in truth,he was a talented and very courageous man on his own right and his professional history more than proves this RIP Donald Auckland New Zealand 2024

I have pictures of K4 before the jet, with the jet but not when it went to being a prop rider.
Any suggestions, just for my own Campbell collection?

Not surprised he married so many times, he was a good looking lad, and being a dare devil probably helped too.
