The Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago) marked the height of dinosaur diversity, with iconic species such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. This era also saw the evolution of birds from theropod dinosaurs. The Cretaceous ended with a mass extinction, likely caused by a massive asteroid impact, which led to the extinction of most dinosaur species.
Dinosaurs have left a lasting legacy, with their fossils providing invaluable insights into their biology and evolution, and their descendants, the birds, continuing to thrive today.
