"Archaeology and the Cultural Heritage of African Americans in Virginia"
Ywone Edwards-Ingram, Ph.D., College of William and Mary Faculty Member, Staff Archaeologist/Coordinator of African-American Archaeology,
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Virginia. Since the second half of the twentieth century, archaeological studies of slave life in Virginia have proliferated, thus resulting in a preponderance of evidence to support historical interpretations at historic sites and museums. This presentation uses data from archaeological sites, mainly in Williamsburg, Virginia, to discuss cultural practices relating to locally made items, imported goods, the landscape, and the use of animals for foods and medicines. The goal is to accentuate the significance of archaeological resources to ongoing efforts to visualize and to make known the tangibles and intangibles of the African American heritage in public representations and commemorations of the past in Virginia.
A public symposium sponsored by the West Virginia Humanities Council, West Virginia University's Native American Studies Program, and Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, West Virginia Division of Culture and History.Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, Moundsville, WV 6-8-13
