Well if I remember right the environment there is described as cold and dark. Remember the scene when Ed Harris is goibg down the abyss. So cold, so dark, alone. Pressure is rising, Oxgen level decreases. "When you look into an abyss for long time, the abyss will finally look inside you. " (retranslated from german.)
