I really enjoy the fact that Mark's videos pop out on a Friday lunchtime. It means that after a cool 8 mile run like this morning's I can come home, shower, eat lunch and then relax in front of my screen in the warm watching a consistently heartwarming video...with a coffee and a doughnut 🍩☕😊 Thanks Mark!
You've inadvertently taken me on a trip down memory lane - Meningitis has messed me up a little bit, but I used to love being really fit, especially in my forties; I could never run though, without triggering my asthma. One day, I discovered counting my breath while running. It was a revelation and from that day on, running was a joy. I used to go cross country through the woods near my home - my dog loved it! Thanks mate, it was a good time in my life. Now, where's my doughnut 😅👍
I'm continually amazed by the DE wet shaving community! I read so many wonderful stories--generosity so very often the badge of honor that folks wear. Given how much I enjoy it now, it's funny to think that I used to hate shaving. It's true! I didn't know what I didn't know and nearly every shave was only a source of pain. For these reasons and more I wore a beard for several years. But then, back in April, I cut off my long ponytail and trimmed the beard. Then I shaved the beard. That experience was also less that satisfying...until... I'd watch TH-cam to learn other things. Why not shaving? The rest is history! Thank you for the razor, Mark. But more than this thanks for sharing all what you've learned. I really enjoy shaving now and I'm actually beginning to get good results! Cheers!
We're not a bad bunch really 🙂 Thanks a great story Derek. I think there are many of us here that endured shaving or perhaps just didn't give it too much thought - a chore! I love shaving now. The product range is unbelievably varied and of good quality. We are in the golden age of shaving - happy days. I have your email Derek, I'll get in touch in a day or two. All the very best 👍
Hi mate. I'm quite surprised there's any plating left on that razor. It did come up very well; much better than I ever imagined, to be honest. I think I was lucky. I hope your weekend has started well - we've got a rare morning where it's not raining! All the best.
Hi Mark- Great shave and soap review; thank you! Good that you were able to polish the British Aristocrat, as it looks like it is a very nice razor. Amazing brush! I hope you are well and wishing you a restful weekend ahead. All the best, my friend!
Hello buddy. I hope your doing well and enjoying your weekend. I'm relaxing and looking forward to a new drama commissioned by the BBC - War of the Worlds, which starts tonight. It'll be right up my street. The Spielberg film started in your neck of the woods, didn't it.
That knot looks like what I imagine a Kent BK12 to be like. I have a Rooney 1/2 Silvertip and although too soft to really face lather it's feels lovely on the face, especially if you have any irritation. You've done a Stirling job on the Aristocrat, beautiful razor 👍
This was the same - it was absolutely lovely on the face; super soft. It was a bit if a lather hog though 😃 Honestly, I'm chuffed the way the razor came up. I really thought it was for the bin!
I'm the same as you Claude, I do prefer a smaller knot but I couldn't resist having a go with the monster! It hogged the lather a bit. Well this weekend I'll be wondering what on earth to get people for Christmas. I've no idea. I hope you are well. Enjoy your weekend. Take care.
Hey Anthony, what a very nice thing to write. Thank you very much indeed. I enjoy making the videos, I must admit and it helps me. I really love finding out about the products or the history of a razor. I'm keep doing them. All the best 😃👍
nice video. that brush looks almost designed for head shaving.... Very nice razor. I have heard Gillette sometimes made razors out of parts they had available.. I bet someone can replate just the upper part for you and make it all look the same.
Yes, I'll bet it would be great for head shaving! I've heard that about Gillette to and know it to be true with certain razors. The Goodwill, I suppose is a good example of them mixing parts. I thought you had too take the razor apart to be re-plated. I'll stick with it for now, it looks pretty good.
Hi Mark. Thanks for this weeks shave video. I wonder if you could possibly show how much shaving soap you press into your bowl. Or if using a tube of shaving soap what amount would you squirt in the bowl? How much is too much? How much is too little? I never seem to get it just right. Maybe it depends on the brand of soap. I'm not sure. Anyway, have a great weekend. Looking forward to your "12 Days of Christmas" idea.
Hi David. It's strange you should ask because it's something I have been thinking about myself, of late. I don't think it does depend on which soap you use but don't quote me on that. I know one gentleman uses a cookery measuring spoon, I think it's for a quarter of a teaspoon; that seems to me to be about the size I use, when I scoop some from the pot. Obviously, my method is a bit hit or miss but I've been playing around with it myself - hence the lolly stick.
Amazing razor you used today. Very glad you could bring it back to a high lustre. These old razors appeal to me a lot and not sure if I should fall down that rabbit hole.
It's a very big Rabbit hole! It's a lot of fun though. You have to be careful though. I bought a WW1 Khaki Set case, for £33 inc. postage. There was no razor, but the case was in great condition. By the time I track down a genuine US Army razor to match it, which will be expensive, I assume, and a blade case it actually would have cheaper to buy a complete set!
Most hobbies are a giant Rabbit hole! This hobby is fun indeed! Hope you can find a US Army razor at a reasonable price. Sometimes it just takes much patience.
Hello Mark! My favourite razor in my den in shaving terms is a British aristocrat like the one you shaved today. Smooth and efficient, with the right weight and probably the best knurling pattern in the handle ever! My second razor that I prefer may surprise you: It's the aluminium Lupo from Razorock. Yes, it's that good, (at least for me). 😉
I agree with you there George, it is a great razor. I slightly prefer my British Rocket but the handle is not as nice, that is for certain. I'm looking forward to using the Lupo, now. Thanks for telling me about it. It has surprised me slightly but it is a nice looking razor. Cheers 👍
I have a large badger like that, holds an amazing amount of soap. After three passes, I can squeeze enough soap from the brush for two more people to shave😁 👍👍👍
Hi Richard. I use Peek polish but only a very tiny amount; it goes a really long way and when I'm finished, even though the razor is shiny, I always wash it in soapy water just to remove any old polish etc.
Richard Torres my FatBoy should arrive today shortly, after I clean it I’m doing to be using it to make it nice and shiny. Also if need be... I have Testors black semi-gloss enamel paint for the adjuster numbers
Ooh, I'm sorry to read about that, Jay. I didn't thumbs up, on purpose 🙂 Is it definitely razor burn and not a reaction to your soap. Maybe miss your shave tomorrow.
Silly me, all this time I assumed that the British Aristocrat was Rhodium plated all around. I am shocked to hear that the head is chromed. That doesn't make much sense, given that the head is where all of the action is. The Pol Silver blades are really special, aren't they? I managed to get 5 excellent shaves out of my first Pol Silver blade, and the 6th was obviously one too many. Mine are 90's vintage, made in Russia; perhaps not quite the same as those made in Poland. So, how many shaves did you get out of your blade, prior to this last shave? They say that size doesn't matter; but that brush intimidates me. I think a 26mm knot is about right for me. And, badger sucks up so much soap, I just can't see going any larger for a face shave alone. Seems a good fit for head shavers. Thanks for sharing. That was a fun mix of kit. Oh, aloe vera is a perishable ingredient. I think the soap maker can get away with it in this application because the lemon acts as a preservative. It is used in after shaves where the alcohol acts as the preservative, and works hand in hand with witch hazel; the aloe vera counteracts the drying effect of the alcohol.
For a moment I thought you meant the aloe vera was awful, but you meant exactly what you wrote. I confused myself there! That's very interesting. Thanks for the information, I had no idea. That brush is massive. I think it would be superb for a head shaver - it was good fun though and super soft on the face. I got 6 shaves, with the Polsilver - I tried another shave after the video. It really didn't feel like it wanted to go more,
@@FriendshipShaving Oh no, aloe vera is good stuff. But when you apply it to a wound, you need to filet a portion of the plant. The soothing properties are in the gel contained within. The skin is not soothing. I would say that it is nearly as useful for burns and abrasions as manuka honey (from bees who feed on tea trees in NZ). And, you can grow it on your window sill.
Hello Mark, nice shave. I have a mint Rhodium Aristocrat British made #16 it's the best shaving razor. Are you sure the one who just shaved with is not a Aristocrat? Because it looks identical to mine.
Gosh - nice one Chris. I know it's an Aristocrat - I have no idea why I wrote Ambassador in the title and description. Did I call it an Ambassador throughout my video? I hope not. I'll have to watch it back! Thanks for the heads up.
A polished brass tool is nicer than an odd chromed one. Doing this by hand seems a hell of work... Surely brass is btr than zamak alloy, imo. Some comments say brass stinks (Karve), but my nose seems not good enough, whatevr. If y can get hold of the new russian 'Start' razor, pls do so. I bought an CC head with 1,18mm gap. It shaves close as R41, but in comfort like Karves. Welcome Russia, actually Omsk in Siberia. Brrr...
I find that when I polish a razor, I have to wash it and that removes any smell. I don't think brass actually smells, although I could be wrong. I don't have an all brass razor. I'll look at Start razors - Siberia, eh. The postman probably uses huskies 😅
I really enjoy the fact that Mark's videos pop out on a Friday lunchtime.

What a fantastic idea to have a 12 days of Christmas giveaway, Mark. And congratulations to Derek on being the lucky recipient of the TV Special.

All that elbow grease really did a great job on the razor and that brush is something else. A lovely relaxing shave.
