    Getting ready to build a French cleat and wanted a review. Few tools, not much experience, but I like doing what I can. With the voice of my highly talented contractor father always in the back of my mind I want to get it right. Ha, ha. I appreciate those of you who take the time to share your skill and knowledge. Michael.

    Precise and to the point. I was going to make 2 smaller ones for a headboard until this video pointed out how difficult it would have been to align both of them vertically. Thanks.

    I’ve watched maybe ten videos by different creators on how to build these. I’ve tried a few of them and failed, and was stressing trying to rip a 3/4” sheet of plywood (a common recommendation) into strips. Your video was better explained, had a solid method I could try (1 x 4 I can cut! 4x8 plywood not so much in my little shop) and the bottom strip idea is a great one. Loved the white boarding also. Great video!

    Good explanation. It is also a good idea to put a screw in through the bottom into the wall to prevent the whole thing from jumping off the cleat in the case of an earthquake. Doesn't take much, just so it can't lift.

    Embarrassed to say I had no idea there was a name for it after all these years! I've always known it as a wooden cleat. I was looking for guidance to mount my canvas frame that has a French cleat. For what I'm doing I don't need a counter cleat at the bottom because the attached cleat is mounted inside the frame giving a flush look on the wall. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you. I had a good idea on what to do. I wasn’t sure if I should go 1x4 for top cleat system and then something thinner around 1x1.5 for the bottom support (using (1)hd purchased dimensional 1x6 pine). After watching I’ll give it a go. The shelf it self isn’t too heavy and I don’t believe there will be overbearing weight that it will be holding. It’s not for me. I’ll tell them to use their heads when putting things on it.

    Just what I was looking for. I searched for ready made ones & they all seem to be aluminium which I don't want to use on my artwork & also they did not include anything to level out the bottom of the painting so I would have had to make something for this anyway. You have made this look very straightforward & I think even I can do it. Many thanks.

    I have been trying to watch as many videos on making the french cleat system as I can find. I am still confused as to how you cut the board down the center and have 2 same sized cleats. Especially after you have turned the blade to a 45 degree angle.

    • @xXcajunblazeXx
      @xXcajunblazeXx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      drawlings10 even if it the two pieces of the clear were identical, the mechanism should still work anyway. But to answer your question, the assumption is that the 45 degree cut will intersect the middle of the board on both axis. Theoretically the only material that should be missing is your kerf.

    FRENCH CLEAT?? Is this cultural appropriation??

    • @BOCraftsman
      @BOCraftsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a system the French used when they were building wooden ships. Now , we all have adapted it as common practice. More like cultural appreciation .

    can you make a cleat using a circular saw?

    • @BOCraftsman
      @BOCraftsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can. Just set the angle of your saw to a 30-45* angle . You also may want to have a guide to keep the saw straight while cutting with the grain of the wood.
