If you’re looking for a disaster film based on a true story, watch The Impossible. It’s based off of a real family that survived the 2004 tsunami when it hit Thailand. Amazing acting, visuals, and story.
The new generation were just too desperate to find logic in a science-fiction movie. I mean it is a movie duh, not a documentary or based on a true story.
6:41 I’m from Chile, and here we feel tremors almost daily so what in other countries might be felt or considered an ‘earthquake,’ we, because of how used to them we are, just see as a tremor… For us it’s not really a big deal unless it hits 7.5+ on the Richter scale-and even then, we might just get up to steady the TV so it doesn’t fall. We’re so used to it that when people from other countries get a bit startled or concerned, we’re usually like: • ‘Is that a tremor? Oh, it’s nothing, it’ll stop soon.’ • ‘Don’t worry about it, just go back to sleep.’ Honestly, we’re just that chill about it because we experience thousands of tremors a year. At this point, we only move if the ground really insists! You should watch videos of Chilean people reacting to actual earthquakes because we are really funny 😂

The San Andreas fault line is largest fault line in the world (fault line is where the earths tectonic plates meet, them rubbing together are what cause earthquakes) In the beginning of the movie they were trying to predict earthquakes which we still can’t do, especially with magnitude
I've been in a few earthquakes in my life, as a California native, I think the absolute worst was Napa 2014 Quake. I fell asleep on the couch watching a movie, for some unknown reason, I shot awake, and about 30 seconds after I woke up, the entire house started shaking, I thought a big rig had driven into our house. My Mom was pregnant with me during the 1989 Loma Prieta. That super bad earthquake in San Francisco that made freeways, including the Bay Bridge, collapse onto their lower levels. The earthquake happened in October, during the Battle of the Bay World Series between the Oakland A's and the San Francisco Giants, I was born 3 months later.
I'm 51 so I remember the Loma quake and the images of the freeways collapsed onto itself with the cars pancaked in-between. I remember the news story from during the game. The whole thing was insane.
@Michelle-ce1qh My Mom and my Grandma were in Mervyn's in Fairfield shopping for basic baby stuff, which apparently was harder to come by in neutrals back then (she waited til I was born to find out what I'd be), and our local Mervyn's wasn't as big. My Mom said she still doesn't know why, but something made her tell my Grandma (her Mom) to hang onto something, they had about 30 seconds to get to an open door frame w no doors, and each took a wall and put their backs against built in pillars, they said the entire building shook, and the malls granite tile floors moved like ocean waves and broke up. Did you ever hear about 1 man, he went through the Loma Prieta AND 9/11 and survived both.
I personally love disaster movies, here is a list of my favorites: - Deep Impact - Armageddon - Independence Day 1 & 2 - The Day after Tomorrow - 2012 - Into the Storm - The Wave (2015) and The Quake (2018) - Geostorm - Moonfall (guilty pleasure of mine)
in my opinion, moonfall is so bad that it wraps around and becomes great. The worst thing a disaster movie can do is be boring, and moonfall is anything but boring with how ridiculous and over the top it is
im from Chile and i remember the earthquake of 2010, it was 8.8 on the scale and it lasted around 3 minutes, it was terrible, there was a tsunami too. I was 12 at that time, some briges fell and some parts of the ground broke open. You can look more info about it, it was a big one, since then it hasnt been one that big, but we usually have many of them around the years
Disaster films are innately cheesey, so you have to remove that from your reaction, but I thought it was definitely one of the better disaster films that's been released. The cargo ship appearing over the crest literally made me gasp in theaters and I honestly couldn't stop shaking afterwards. The adrenaline rush I got from this movie was that long lasting 😂
Yes, the whole of the west coast is at huge risk of an enormous quake off shore. The Cascadian Subduction Zone. San Francisco is also vastly overdue their next ‘big one’ - look at what happened the last time. And check out the LA Northridge quake in 1994 - look at the damage that did. The West Coast is literally a disaster overdue.
It’s so cool revisiting this film. It was shot in my home town in Australia. The University and tv studio locations were shot at the place where I went to film school!
Biggest quake I've been in was a 5.3 here in kansas, they're different though it's not super shakey it's more like you feel like your house is on water going over waves.
Saw this in the movies and absolutely loved it, in Sydney where I live we dont get much natural disasters outside of bushfires and droughts (have also witnessed a rare tornado and massive king tides) but despite not being located near any fault lines we have experienced a few small earthquakes over the last few years. While the diasters in this movie are very overdramatic it still puts into perspective how destructive these disasters can be.

Some regions in France have a moderate to high risk of earthquakes. The smallest one where I live (Alsace) was a 2.1 last year. The biggest one that I noticed was a 4.8, in Mulhouse which is around 200km away. It was like a car hit the house. The cabinet shook, I heard the glasses cling and that was it. PS: San Andreas is a really good movie and one of fave disaster movies!
Hey Seb, love your videos. I am an individual who works in the film industry and specifically VFX, and I have some insight for you on the BTS of this film. The reason the VFX looks so good even now is the tremendous amount of dedication put into making the audience feel like they are experiencing it with the characters of the movie. One of the things that was crucial for this is what we call Matte Paintings, and I happen to know Michael Colburn, one of the lead matte painters. One of the matte painting he specifically did for this film, was 48k (10 times that of what is projected in theaters). The file was so big because they wanted to capture every detail down to scratches on the glass of a building a mile away. Michael used to say that the file would take about 30 minutes just for him to open it up in the program! They would open it up and have to take a lunch break, then come back and start working. Crazy high res that we just don't see as much anymore. Thanks for the video. It brought back memories for me! AB

I've been worried about earthquakes ever since I moved to WA. Apparently Mt Rainier is WAY overdue for an eruption, and with eruptions comes earthquakes. I'm mostly out of the main damage path in Seattle, but the real danger is soil liquidation...that's right....the earth under your feet becomes like water during the earthquake. And that keeps me up at night 😆
I my self would never go skydiving. I have a thing with heights. And falling. But I did used to live across the street. From an airport. And they did do sky diving. My middle daughter is 22 now, but for the first three years of her live, she truly thought people did rain from the sky... Memories,😁
You asked if we've ever been in a big earthquake - I was in one of the largest earthquakes in California. It hit the Bay Area on Oct. 17, 1989. It collapsed the Oakland bridge during rush hour but since the World Series was that day it wasn't as busy as it would be on a normal day and kept the death toll and injuries low. I was only a few weeks old and at that time my dad would have normally laid me in my crib for a nap after feeding me but he was watching the start of the game so he held me a little longer. During the earthquake my dresser fell onto my crib breaking it. So pretty lucky lol
The Rock is the new George Kennedy (but not as funny). If there's a disaster movie, he'll be involved. San Andreas is basically a remake of the disaster classic Earthquake, and Dwayne is also in Skyscraper, which is very Towering Inferno
In my 66:5 year's living here in Australia, I have experienced 3 earthquakes, the first when I was about 12 or 13.. the house was shaking, the freestanding wardrobe (about 3" from the ceiling) was rocking back & forth.. this was about half an hour after sunrise, as I realised what was going on, I saw my parents running out the back door, a bit disappointed the left me. The other 2 I didn't feel them as the epicenter was hundreds of km away & deep in the earth's crust, it was just like a bump & a loud crack. My mini foxy heard the second one & was barking at it. Animals know an earthquake is coming before us humans 😊
I was in a 7.5 mag earthquake in 2007 when I was visiting Pakistan and it was devastating and horrific. Not really anything you can do except go outside. That’s your best bet. Everyone says go under the table or something but genuinely get your ass outside as fast as possible on foot.
This movie was amazing when I first watched it, me and my sister watched it a few times after that also when I told her about it, I’m so happy your watching it
I remember that when this movie came out, it was supposed to be the year when the fault was actually gonna crack, because its way past its time stamp and it was ready to blow, nothing has happened ever since
That shopping mall scene was filmed on the Gold Coast Australia, I used to work there (the pines shopping centre) and I remember seeing the rock doing the punching scene from across the street. And I remember them placing the helicopter inside the shop and seen it in the air flying around lol. 17:12
Growing up, I would hear that siren each and every day at 1p seven days a week. The "Emergency Alert System" was checked to make sure it was working. Welcome to the 1960's and 70's in the USA. Depending on your town, it was every day, or once a week. The first time I heard it that I can really remember. I was visiting my grandparents. I was less than ten feet away from the tower, and I was 6.
U love Godzilla so much, you should watch Cloverfield. It’s about a Titan like but from the POV of a some insignificant civilian. The lore behind the film is so insanely deep. Too deep too write about it here. Very cool movie!!
If you haven’t seen 2012(2009) then you definitely will love it! The scale of destruction in that is so damn wild and it looks Amazing still to this day!
I was apart of 2 major earthquakes in my life, the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, I dont know much about what happened during the 2010 earthquake all I know about the 2011 is my sister nearly got crushed by a bookcase but luckily my mum defended her, me and my Pop (mums dad) were in the garage completly unefected
i live in iceland so i have experienced many earthquakes before. largest ive felt was a 5.7 but i was far away but still felt it. the most intense amount of shaking ive felt is from a 4.1 earthquake when i was on the top floor of a building (6th floor) in reykjavík the capital. the couch jolted to one side and everything shook. after that earthquake i felt constant shaking from an earthquake swarm 35km away and the weirdest part about earthquakes is the sound. its hard to describe but its super loud
Seb -- The Richter Scale is logarithmic, meaning that each whole number increase is *10x* worse than the previous one. So a magnitude 8 quake is *10 times* more intense than a magnitude 7, not merely +1 more intense. So an 8.6 would definitely be worse than an 8.5. (Fun fact -- it is *highly* unlikely that an earthquake along the San Andreas fault could get any higher than 8.3. Which is still a pretty dåmm severe quake, but nowhere near the 9.6 of this movie.)
6:42 experienced a 7.3 quake when I lived in Japan during December in 2012. was in a dept store when I heard everyone's phone started blaring the earthquake alert and then I grabbed my phone to start filming as a coworker and I started to move out to the parking lot. the alarms going off and the start of the quake were more than a bit concerning to say the least(had felt a few quakes already but not really any big ones that actually set off the alerts). got the last part of it filmed as we were going out. just some footage of stuff falling off shelves and breaking, lights on the ceiling swaying and the workers moving around hustling people out. luckily it wasn't too long a quake so wasn't all that bad. not really any major damage. I had been there for a just a couple months when that happened. people there had always told me "we have quakes all the time." up where I was living. I thought they were exaggerating a bit, thinking maybe 1 or so a month. pretty much had at least 1 that I could feel every week some times more. a coworker even showed me the official website to look at the intensity of each quake and where the epicenter was. would basically pop my phone out and look ever single time the ground shook because they fascinated....and kinda scared the crap out of me when they lasted more than 10 seconds or so. when they happened at work, I learned real fast just to look around and see what my coworkers were doing. most of the time I would just see them put a hand on stacks of paper to keep them from shifting and continue grading papers and stuff and not even look up. wasn't unless I saw one of them move that I knew it would be big.
When I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in the early 2000s a group of us went to the skydiving business on North Shore near the Dole pineapple fields. All of the instructors were locals and looked like had just finished surfing at the beach before taking us up in a plane a lot like the one in this movie, even had the same door as the one in this movie. I got extremely nervous because the skydiving instructor I was jumping with kept mentioning his faulty pacemaker and seemed to be in his mid 50s with a full head of long grey hair. When we scooted to the door I was absolutely terrified and yelling "I don't want to do this" but somehow the guy I was strapped to and no more than 8" from never heard me screaming "I don't want to do this" and launched us out of the plane. Once your in freefall it only last a few seconds till the parachute released and opened, him and I floated over the pineapple fields and he started moving us over the ocean next to the landing zone for fun I guess and the only part that actually scared me was scooting my ass up to that door and my body basically hanging out of the side of the plane, everything after that was incredible and it wasn't very expensive.
Ooh I remember watching this so many times because we’d moved recently and there was no WiFi so I only had what was downloaded on my laptop 😭😭 to this day I always skip tht Taylor song if I hear it in a car
I studied geology in university. This movie has so very many geological... if not impossibilities, then *highly* unlikely improbabilities, that it doesn't even scare me watching it; I just laugh and make fun of it in proper MST3K fashion. Earthquakes -- especially those along the San Andreas Fault (and heck, the San Andreas itself!) -- Just Don't (or won't) Do This. 🤣
For the question of if I've experienced an Earthquake, well I remember two that I've lived through. One was a long time ago during the 2000's which happened in Virginia if I remember correctly but I was taking a mid-day nap since I was a young child at the time and it was a Saturday and all I remember was falling asleep on a couch and waking up on the floor. The second was last year, it wasn't a powerful earthquake but I was at the dentist and being on the 4th floor it caused a lot of shaking.
@sebscreen so for the short story, their kid drowned and the rock blamed himself for not be able to save their daughter. which torn their family apart. also the movie is set in California. an alot of people believe something like this cant happen. but it would be like, if Great Britain got hit by a earthquake, and half of it just sunk in the ocean.

This movie was amazing when I first watched it, me and my sister watched it a few times after that also when I told her about it, I’m so happy your watching it
I remember that when this movie came out, it was supposed to be the year when the fault was actually gonna crack, because its way past its time stamp and it was ready to blow, nothing has happened ever since
I watched this in AP environmental science class last semester 😂
I was less than ten feet away from the tower, and I was 6.
love your videos seb ive been watching u for almost two year i just wanted to say your a great youtuber and hope your well
The ultimate of ultimate disaster movie is “2012” (2009) I rented it some year back, and bought it the same hour.
I saw it at the theater and it was crazy!
2012 is my fav disaster movie this is a close second
same
ZI DID NOT EXPECT THIS AFTER WATCHING THIS IN MY SCIENCE CLASS?? IM ACTUALLY SO HAPPY RHEJ
"She is tweaking" followed by thats not funny killed me LOL
This is one of my favorite movies aaah I’m so excited for this reaction 🎉
Sebs got sonic 3 to watch now
U love Godzilla so much, you should watch Cloverfield. It’s about a Titan like but from the POV of a some insignificant civilian. The lore behind the film is so insanely deep. Too deep too write about it here. Very cool movie!!
This was literally my favourite movie. I was 11 when it came out and was the top movie for me until a while ago
If you haven’t seen 2012(2009) then you definitely will love it! The scale of destruction in that is so damn wild and it looks Amazing still to this day!
YEEEEESSSSSSS HE FINALLY REACTED TO IT. My childhood movie, and it’s still my favorite movie ever
Me and my family love this movie and I cry every time I watch the scene of Blake drowning and Ray trying to save her 😭
i live in iceland so i have experienced many earthquakes before. largest ive felt was a 5.7 but i was far away but still felt it. the most intense amount of shaking ive felt is from a 4.1 earthquake when i was on the top floor of a building (6th floor) in reykjavík the capital. the couch jolted to one side and everything shook. after that earthquake i felt constant shaking from an earthquake swarm 35km away and the weirdest part about earthquakes is the sound. its hard to describe but its super loud
I hear that alarm every day in Hamburg- Germany! idk why but its still creeping me out
Paul Giamatti.Legend. 🌟
Dear Sebastian Screen, thank you for this meal in front of me and this entertainment to go with it- much appreciated
“Mate! That’s no joke”
Seb I’m crying laughing😭
Watching this movie that was about the quakes in California at the moment California is now on fire is crazy. They be going through so much
I love natural disaster movies so much
Ooh I remember watching this so many times because we’d moved recently and there was no WiFi so I only had what was downloaded on my laptop 😭😭 to this day I always skip tht Taylor song if I hear it in a car
I remember going to the cinema to watch this with my mom we both really enjoyed this one
A very good movie! Glad to see you watch it Seb! ☺️
The second was last year, it wasn't a powerful earthquake but I was at the dentist and being on the 4th floor it caused a lot of shaking.
bruh, that beginning scene just mad, no one could survive that much crash
@sebscreen so for the short story, their kid drowned and the rock blamed himself for not be able to save their daughter. which torn their family apart. also the movie is set in California. an alot of people believe something like this cant happen. but it would be like, if Great Britain got hit by a earthquake, and half of it just sunk in the ocean.
13:50 “the British are coming” 😭
