- This is a medieval ballad that exists in Norway in over 100 text versions, with over 25 melodies. It tells of a young girl (Little Kjersti) who is taken by "Bergekongen", the King of the Mountain -- sometimes "Alvekongen", the Elf King -- into his mountain. In other words she is "bergtatt" (literally mountain-taken). As shown in the illustration by Gerhard Munthe, Liti Kjersti is given a drink that makes her forget her past life -- when questioned by the King of the Mountain after she has drunk the draught, she replies: "in the mountain I was born..." and so on.
