Exquisite! His velvety legato is unmatched since Kreisler! This is a very difficult piece to play correctly, and he makes it look and sound so effortless! The shifts and intonation are spot on.

I’ve known the Kogan’s most of my life. Pavel, his son, also an amazing violinist-turned-conductor, was principal guest conductor our professional orchestra in Utah for a very long time. Brough Nina to play Saint Saens Piano 2, and his nephew to play Saint Saens Violin 3. Amazing program. Such amazing talent. Loved them so much!!

@@pianofan1000 9 months later.... but his right hand is a "non-standard" bow hold, which isn't necessarily true. But basically, he uses what is known as a Russian bow hold which is higher up on the bow, and you will notice his pinky often comes off the bow, which is usually frowned upon by teachers who prefer students use the "proper" bow hold which is lower on the bow, centered around the frog with the pinky planted on the silver part at the end of the bow with the thumb on the grip. However, there is no "proper" bow hold. Each violinist should use whatever bow hold works best for them and is most comfortable in producing a good sound.

Anyone knows the instrument and strings Kogan was playing in this video? Amazing tone!

It’s probably the ‘Canary Bird’ 1743 del Gesu. Now played by Augustin Dumay. Not 100% sure which strings he used but likely wound gut G, D, & A and a steel E string.
