Remembered my younger days where I never used to miss MMIyer's concerts. You have done a great job by choosing his presentation for explanation of creativity.
The unforgettable Madurai Mani !I had the good fortune of listening to him .kalpanaswaram flowing like a waterfall, raga and neraval like a placid river---he'd make the people forget themselves !Apart from his ingenuity,I think it was his swanubhuthi which made his music special !He used to enjoy, and deliver throughout the concert ¡👍😀
It is great pleasure to get the expertise from the contemporary super star of contemporary super star of Carnatic music about the all time great Madurai Mani Iyer.. There can be no comparison to the genius MMI. I would like to know Sanjay's opinion of MMI's Sukhi yevaro in Kaanada sung by this grand master . I would have heard this keerthanai atleast 10 times in live concert with accompaniment from Chowdiah , Sethu Ramiah, Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai, Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai, Lalkudi, MSG, TNK.& many more in violin & Palakad Mani Iyer., Raghu, Suppuddu, Umyalppuram Sivaraman, Vellore Ramabadran in Mridangam - What a wonderful experience ..I as a Rasika don't know about the technicalities of music except identifing the raagas almost95% .I was a Mad rasika of genius MMI atleast would have listen to his concert 100 times live . therefore Would like to know the opinion of my present day idol Sanjaya.after his listening MMI's Sukhi Evaro.
Used to hear MMIyer at kapali temple as a ten year old and now listening to you about these stalwarts with the intricacies explained how great they were makes listening to them a joy again after so many years. This is from a novice and an ordinary fan of carnatic music. Please keep doing this for the benefit of classical Carnatic godly music. 🙏
My journey in Carnatic music also started with listening to MMI at Kapali temple in 1950 as a 8 year old (Sarasa Samadhana in particular) ..today I was listening to the Ethanaiyo piravi nerval and thought May God let him take some more piravis as long as Carnatic music is alive ! (or play a role in keeping it alive)

'Thookiya Thiruvadi' - great composition of Kaviyogi Shuddhananda Bharati. Sri Madurai Mani Iyer is a master by himself has given a matchless piece of this 'niraval' in this song. I have heard this song in Sri. Madurai Mani Iyer's magical voice many a times. Young musicians should learn and adopt such innovative ways of singing compositions of such Divine composers.
Most of us listen to good music but without understanding or being unable to appreciate or analyse the finer points. Sanjay with his fine expression both musical and verbal makes us understand Karnatak music in all its glory. He is unique.
Great explanation 👌 & Sri Mani Iyer is always makes the listeners spellbound while singing neraval, for example neraval at hitavu matalento in sarasa sama dhana in raga Kaapi Narayani.
An interesting and informative insight into creativity with an apt illustration of a rendering by MMI . Likewise , in MMI ‘s nephew TVS’s rendering of “ Inda Paranmugam “ he takes up “ nee our silaiyo “ for similar treatment. Would like to hear from SS his take on this . Tx RCN
This is from a concert at Tamil Isai Sangam in late fifties. Violin Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai Mridangam Palani Subramania pillai Ghatam Alangudi Ramachandran. AIR relayed excerpts from concerts live those days.
very good Sanjay. I recall those days , say more than 5 decades ago, when MMI used to sing for four /five years of sublime music. In those days the Govt. transport was not available after 9 pm. We used to walk back to our homes , say about 5/6 miles talking about it, ( analysing is too big a word for us, novices )
Sanjai Subrahmaniyamji! Sincere appreciation for your effort to promote such useful discussion. Please make a brief mention about the composer of the keerthana during the course of your analysis. Thank you.
but if you hear, his different rendition of thukiya thiruvadi, it may sound same. some differences might be there here and there... I am not pin pointing mmi, its the case for all most all musicians in any school of music.... they are kind of restricted in their style and approaches....
It is a cry from his heart. Each of those neraval patterns are his tears. Astounding.
Excellent no equal to this.
