This is a very interesting and thought-provoking presentation. Thanks for taking the effort.
Having spent quite some years exploring the on-line world in the service of stamp collecting I would say don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think the value of current digital media is obvious but not the whole story for the future of philately. The social side of joining a club and the transience of digital media need to be acknowledged and part of the mix for the future. The traditional way of running a club and sharing information are very much a function of a certain generation so moving to new media makes a lot of sense in terms of communicating with new generations of collectors. The down side is we all rely on the work of our preceding generations for our knowledge. So, if someone spends 30 years researching their specialty and posts all this knowledge on a website, Facebook or other media, we are likely to loose this at some stage. Who is going to fund and maintain for example Stampboards 30 years from now. How will all that information be retained? Digital media does not have a long and secure lifespan. A library will retain a philatelic book in print for 100 years or more.
I suggest the strategy for the future needs to embrace the best of the traditional world as well and the opportunities of the constantly changing digital world.

Thanks for your insights! In regards to loss of knowledge, it is always important that societies maintain their journals, newsletters etc for future generations. Saying that, a lot of information in printed format is hard to obtain or rather expensive once it moves out of circulation. Also, a lot of knowledgeable collectors die without passing on any of their knowledge. The Christchurch Philatelic Society in NZ has already begun the process of documenting and retaining digital newsletters and other media. I am sure the APS is too. Traditional vs Modern is not a black and white subject and there are definitely grey areas. However, we have as a community focused too heavily on the traditional and we need to balance this out. Its exciting times with new challenges!

Very interesting discussion, everyone, thank you. I'm a beginning collector (although born in 1969, consider myself a Modern Traditionalist) and not involved with a group in any way, but even as an individual who might be interested in growing their philatelic profile, as it were, on their social media account(s), this was quite informative.

A very interesting broadcast. I am. Classical collector, however embrace the modernists.
Meaning, I do like stamp clubs and stampshows, however do follow a lot of the social media on stamp collecting as well.
The clubs of tomorrow will be digital and free of charge to become a member. The content is not made by a webmaster, every member can put stories up which will be published regularly by the webmaster.
This way it can be an active website and it is owned by it’s members.
Also non philatelists might join, e.g. scientists who see a discussion on stamps in their science expertise field and want to comment, or historians explaining the windmills were key in forming the Netherlands (see The final story of exploring stamps for this season)That might bring new collectors to the hobby.
My main message is, we have to open the content of websites to contributers to keep sites interesting by changing content on an constant basis.

Just like you, I move between different media types. We are already seeing some clubs go free. The Korea Stamp Society (KSS), a couple of years ago, was about to close. Instead, a couple of their remaining members dedicated themselves to reinvent by dropping traditional members. They are now a 100%-free stamp club with a free digital newsletter. Les Congolatres and Les Belgolatres also offer free newsletters. At the Rhodesian Study Circle our content comes from both collectors and non-collectors - everyone contributing to that online 'stamp album' that represents who we are. I didn't put it in my presentation, but locking down a website as a 'members benefit' is one of the worst things you can do, in my opinion. I don't go to a shop and buy something without seeing it first! ;)

Oops! - KSS dropped traditional membership styles - not members lol

How the Royal Philatelic Society here in the UK could do with watching this, how do people think that children are going to become involved when a website throws obstacles such as printing off forms and no special section for junior learning as mentioned here.

Interesting. the RPS in London was raised in this video too.

@@jimmyg. Thank you for the reply, if you look at the RPS website the drop down menus are instigated by clicking on a image, not one image mentions membership, or how to join or a junior section. Considering this is the daddy of all philatelic societies you would think they would want to get youngsters involved. I am 65 years of age and I find there website odd and I am only slightly tech savvy. I have more to say but there is not enough space on here to sound off.

@@peterlittle6651 I just had a look at their website and I totally agree with you. Absolutely nothing about how to join (and they aren't the only ones, to be fair)! The problem with using 'Royal' in a title is it will split demographics straight down the middle - those that see Royal as a status and, perhaps more modern collectors will see it as wealthy privilege (alienating). So not having a clear path to joining is a club-killer.

@@jimmyg. Hi James thanks I will not be able to make a difference to their relationship with the public but will see if I can raise the profile here in the UK with my own blog for newcomers to the hobby like myself.

Hi D M! Do you mean like a website where you can catalogue your own collection? Or do you mean creating your own website?

    • @jimmyg.

If you are after just software to catalogue your collection, check under Software on this link: www.rhodesianstudycircle.org.uk/collect/online-resources/

What do I do instead of a "contact us" page, for others to contact? You mention that it creates spam

If you are unable to create a Contact Us form on your site, I would recommend creating an email address that is different to your personal address. This way your personal account won't be subject to hacking attempts etc.

Color me a tradionalist. Weather you are old or young. Doesn't matter if you were born before 1970 or after. There is nothing like walking into a 'brick & morter' establishment and interacting with other philatalists and looking at actual stamps, and browsing through an actual catalog that you can feel with your own hands. Please, don't even compare that sensation to anything less. Buying stamps on ebay, Hip Stamps and others is quite a drag. And speaking of digitalized catalogs, I have a 2014 British Commonwelth and it sucks when compared to the real thing. I'm afraid we have become so isolated and are becoming less and less socialble. This is not natural. But being a pragmadic man, I have adapted to the changing times. So I welcome all forms of media and platforms. But I don't have to like it!

An "aspiring old white man" Scott English, what in the hell does that have to do with anything? Why bring race into this conversation?
