  • In the 19th century, Norway began to resemble the country we have today. The bourgeoisie grew, the cities grew, the working class grew larger, industrialization increased. New groups took part in the social debate, and the country was linked more closely to land and water.
Literature always reflects the time in which it is written. In literature, the 19th century had begun with romanticism, where the brilliant author was supposed to convey his unique insights. When modernity pushed in beyond the 19th century, this changed. Norway was at full speed to become a modern society, with major changes and new challenges. Realism arose as a direction in literature: the authors were now to enter their time and put the problems under debate.
