    The real purpose of TURBO on the old x86 machines was essentially "backwards compatibility" to put it in I guess modern laymens terms. Most people have no clue what it is (Even my CIS Hardware college professor years ago couldn't explain it. But then again he was fucking useless). It technically makes the machine slower.

      @JamesBalazs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Some DOS games/programs designed for specific systems with specific clock speeds run at odd speeds on systems with different clock speeds, as in the game would run at 2x speed as opposed to a higher frame rate. I'm guessing that would be the purpose of the turbo button - changing clock speed so certain software actually works?

      @plaguedoctor3782 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheRebel3000 Yeah, Wing Commander and Wolfenstien 3D are the most famous examples. Both play optimally on a 286/386.
      486 is too fast for both. Unless there's a unofficial patch floating around.

    • @pwnt39
      @pwnt39 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i though it was lowering the CPU's clock speed or disabling cache

      ATCRyderX© kinda like a Intel CPU cost twice as much as arm7 or AMD because you can dumb down i7 to old Pentium.

  • @lepompier132
    @lepompier132 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I may not be the last one to tell you this, but, starting with the 486 cpu, they all needed a heatsink w FAN, because the heat would kill them. Only early video cards that could tolerate a heatsink only. So all of you out there if you want to build an old school DOS PC with a 486 up, don't forget the heatsink w fan.
    One thing I happy, some of these old PC are still in very good working condition. So please enjoy them and keep the Bios battery in good condition and that PC can go on and on.

    • @NTGTechnology
      @NTGTechnology 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't wanna be THAT guy, but a 486 66 MHz or less is fine without any kind of heatsink, let alone a fan. Obviously it's best for longevity to have them, but it's not strictly necessary.
      To be fair, these early 60 and 66 MHz Pentium CPUs were known to have heat related issues, so a fan in the case probably would've been wise.

    Dude, your videos are taking me down memory lane. I remember back in the day with these type cases, you had to set jumpers on the back of the panel for it to display whatever MHz you wanted or needed it to. When we would sell those cases, people really liked the display to light up! Thanks for the videos, keep up the good work!!

    This machine has some SOMA-like feeling to me. An old almost dying hardware that somehow survived the end of the world. It is still somehow alive but will die in a couple of years but there will be no one there to witness its demise. Almost everyone is dead and the souls of not-dead-yet are going to leave the planet in a railgun shell.

    Thank you very much for this great video.
    You mentioned that this machine is intel 586 (which was earlier than pentium). As far as I know there was nothing called intel 586. After 486 intel switched to the pentium trade mark as their 586 class cpu. The other cpu manufacturers debuted 586.
    Could you please elaborate on the system specifications of your machine? I am interested in knowing what cpu exactly is used in the machine.

    I have a K6-II motherboard that serves to run all my legacy applications- like yours, the turbo button doesn't do anything, but the connections are there... for compatibility I suppose?
    Note that my board runs at 400 MHz CPU- I'm not certain, but I believe at such a high speed, the purpose of turbo for legacy compatibility died out.
    Thanks for the update- great video!

    i beleave the hard drive failed due to ether from motherboard for it is damaged or overheating or worse the system could be damaged itself in the point where the harddisk comes in play. its best to try and replace the machine harddisk with a new one and move the files there instead of well... making a new one.

  • @Blurredman
    @Blurredman 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You forgot to mention that the Turbo button does not do what most people think (that being that the PC speeds up using it), but that the contrary is applicable in that the non-use of the Turbo button allows the CPU to be a lower clock in order to run older programmes. It is not meant to speed up the PC, but to return it to normal clock after using a programme that requires a lower clock.

    Correct, when the Pentium's first arrived the Turbo button became obsolete, the only way to achieve 386 and/or 486 speeds in Pentium based CPU's is to disable the CPU caches from the BIOS, or use a program such as Mo Slow, though having a PC from each era is [while not ideal] is the best way.
