I'm a fellow Marylander (Baltimore) getting into dog walking. Using an ATS Legion Cobra Rigger Belt and a strong carabiner, I found this leash looking at the maximum option from a brand I use for my grandfather's husky. Clip all three together, and not only do you have a peer-to-peer dynamic with the dog, as opposed to master/slave, your spine would likely snap before the dog and yourself would become untethered, regardless of hand usage.
I hope it all works as well as the specs and reputations claim.
