    If I remember correctly, the reason Bhaal plays such a pivotal role is because even though he came in third during the tests, he was in fact given the power over death (not the dead). Thus, he could deny Bane the deaths Bane required to enact his tyranny or deny to Myrkul the dead required to feed his armies. I think there's lore about him one-upping them after the contest, pointing this out to them when they crowed about beating him. In fact, I think it's lore that's written in things you find in one or both of the first two BG games. If you want good lore for them, read the Forgotten Realms "Avatar Series" (one of the ones they did with different authors for each book). It tells the story of their machinations from the perspective of following the group of Cyric, Kelemvor, Midnight and Adon when they were still mortal....and how some of them ascended to the pantheon of gods that exists now....and all about the plot with the tablets. Elminster's there too!

    This was very helpful. I remember the Time of Troubles, but the never-ending soap opera of Faerun's deities is one of the reasons I stopped paying attention to the setting not long after. At least knowing that much about the setting set me up to play BG1/2 without being confused. Finding Bane, Bhaal and Myrkhul living as mortals would be very confusing for me.

    • @thinking-ape6483
      @thinking-ape6483 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as i remember the story of BG1+2 in the time of the gods walking as avatars between humans several gods were slain by powerful mortals and Bhaal foresaw his death and thats why he created offspring, so his essence would be spread and the death of mortals by them would fuel their essence and when they finally die by their fellow brothers and sisters this soul would be banished and collected in Bhaals realm and the plan was for Bhaals Head Priestess to reawaken him, but Amelyssan/Melissan betrayed her God and wanted the essence for herself, thats why she orchestrated the huge war at the end of "Throne of Bhaal" by scheming and manipulating all of the mightiest Bhaal Spawn to fight each other for the Throne, while she pretended to be a saviour for all the weak offspring, trying to keep them save, but actually she collected them all in one spot to be sacrificed. And the protagonist in the end has the decision to either become the new God of Murder or to decline this option, which would mean in BG3 we will face our old protagonist as the new God of Murder or there must have been another explanation how Bhaal came back from the dead and forgotten Gods.

    • @raifthemad
      @raifthemad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had the choice to assimilate rest of Baal's essence and become a god. It was never stated, that they'd be the god of murder, or even tied to any alignment or any such thing when they did so. I always figured, that they'd have to figure their portfolio out for themselves, what they wanted to be a god of.

    • @Belphoron
      @Belphoron ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raifthemad it was a fluke. Amelissan as the Head Priestess scammed the Bhaalspawn into believing that the last Highlander will become the new God of Murder(the energy connected to Bhaal wouldnt let you change your Domain imo) but actually the whole Murder-ing of victims and the death of Bhaalspawn essence was planned to resurrect the God of Murder himself in the end. But Amelissan played not only all the Bhaalspawn against each other but also betrayed Bhaal by planning to use the essence for herself to become a Godess.

  • @Goddamnitiwantaname
    @Goddamnitiwantaname 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember the lore differently. All of them died, sure. But Bhaal had his Bhaalspawn plan to bring him back which ultimately failed due to his High Pristess betraying him. Myrkul ingrained himself so much into the mind of people that they would never forget him, allowing him to "survive" in the Astral Plane running on fumes. And Bane, after getting killed by Torm, actually made it back, bursting forth from his own son, taking control over his former domain.
    I never heard of the story that was told in this video.

    • @LordMortanius
      @LordMortanius 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Myrkul actually survives in the Crown of Horns.
      Also, WotC laughs at consistency and does whatever they want, so don't worry about it.

    Considering in the current FR world state in DnD 5e, canonically, Gorions Ward rejected godhood. And eventually died as one of if not the last Bhaalspawn and Bhaal did indeed return. (not sure if Larian is going off that) Assuming of course the world state hasn't changed since 5e's release. Indeed I could very well be wrong. Heck even Bane is alive again in 5e. Small Question.
    How did the Dead Three Return to life?
    I know Bane had a helmet containing his essence.
    And Bhaal had the Bhaalspawn.
    But it sounds like Bhaal managed to come back without the Bhaalspawn.
    Or is this relating to that one Codex that had the last 2 Bhaalspawn killing each other?

    • @LightStreak567
      @LightStreak567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was no helmet. After Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul were slain during the Time of Troubles (which happened ten years before the first Baldur's Gate game), Cyric temporarily took most of the powers of the Dead Three, and a small portion of Bane's power went to his son Iyachtu Xvim. Like Bhaal's Bhaalspawn, Bane's son was instrumental in his resurrection, Iyachtu was used as a cocoon for Bane's essence. Bane's resurrection happened in the winter of the year the first Neverwinter Nights game happened.
      Though most of the Bhaalspawn died during the events of the Baldur's Gate games, and the game protagonist and Imoen gave up their essences to become regular mortals, there were two Bhaalspawn remaining that lived for 100 years because of Bhaal's essence on them, Viekang and Abdel. Their deaths brought Bhaal back. Myrkul's method of survival is a plot point in Neverwinter Nights 2 Mask of the Betrayer.

MotB is set two years afterwards in 1374 DR, so your claim that MotB is not canon is wrong. Magic of Faerun's info on Myrkul surviving in the Crown of Horns proves The developers of NWN 2 have been doing their homework on Forgotten Realms lore. The expansion's story exists in FR lore, but Myrkul's fate at the hands of the NWN 2 protagonist when he/she finds the Crown of Horns doesn't matter to the Second Sundering.

    Isn't the lvl 10 low to encounter deities?
    Meet them , ok. But fight them ? I think that would be fitting for a 15 lvl player

      @WolfheartFPS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say yes, but we could encounter these three in more weakened forms. They are mortal now in the time of BG3 and no longer true gods. Maybe with the use of the environment and some NPC help we could take one of them out!

    Nice video man! Looking forward for the video about the history of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I didn't play the games when I was young, and recently I tried to play but the graphics sucks so much and it's AD&D rules 🤣... Too late for me now, should have played ten years earlier 🤣. The history video will come in handy and give me some lore to start the BD 3.
    Thanks, man. Greetings from Brazil

      Thanks for watching. I totally understand. You should have played 20 years earlier! Crazy that Baldur’s Gate 1 came out in 1998 and Baldur’s Gate 2 in 2000! Greetings from New York.

    Didn't Cyric got the power of Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul after the Time of Trouble. Kelemvor get the portfolio of God of Death and Midnight replaced Mystra later after Helm kill Mystra.

    • @LightStreak567
      @LightStreak567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're wrong, but not entirely. Mystra was destroyed by Helm for trying to bypass him on the Celestial Stairway, but eventually a mortal woman named Midnight who was one of Cyric's companions before he betrayed them and ascended to godhood became the new Mystra. Bane was destroyed by Torm, Bhaal was destroyed by Cyric, and Myrkul was destroyed by Midnight herself, the next Mystra.

      Been a few years I didn't read the trilogy of Midnight, Cyric and Kel. I didn't put all the info you added but I still remember most of what you write. I really like forgetting realm book. It was another era when you was playing with real dice, papers, and your player handbook version 2.

    Does that mean that NWN2 Masks of the Betrayer isn't canon ? Or at least the choice of ending Myrkul for good ? Or just that Myrkulites worship an inexisting god ?

    • @LordMortanius

      MotB isn't canon. Myrkul's deific essence survives in the Crowns of Horns, and has done so since 2e.

    I like your videos,really. Very informative and cool to watch &hear but...
    How come that in the video you said that you might do the lore videos on past Baldur's gates just after Baldur's gate 3 is in creation? I mean...if you are a huge fan and a lover of Baldur's gate game, you would have done videos way before any of us knew about Baldur's gate 3. See where I'm going with this?

      Thanks for watching but no I don’t really see where you are going with this haha. Did you know that Baldur’s Gate 1 came out in 1998 and Baldur’s Gate 2 2000? TH-cam wasn’t even close to being around.

      @@WolfheartFPS your profile is 8 years old. Before announcement of BD3 you could have made videos about BD1 and BD2. That is my point. I hope you are not, as some people say, "tryharding" to make content of an exciting game that is to come. Not only that. I would personally appreciate you doing at least lore of the BD1 and BD2 since all i see is that you are a big fan nearly fully placing time and energy in BD3. This is my opinion but for whatever it's worth, i only desire to see someone with your set of skill and knowledge to give us viewer's all the angles, not only BD3. All of this is with respect but that is my opinion.

      @@alexandarblake6191 Are you familiar with how the youtube algorithm works if he had made a baldurs gate 1 and 2 lore video back in the past no one would ever see it, because the search term for baldurs gate 1 and 2 would probably have burried it in all subsequent potential searches like "rpg" etc. it wouldnt have been worth the time for a youtuber to make such a video about games long dead. It makes sense now to extrapolate thier lore to ready people for the history for BG3. Is your you tube identity wrapped up in BG1 and 2 lore videos or something ?
