    I had one of these in Australia during the early 90’s.
    I swapped it and a few years later the government clamped down on semi automatic weapons.
    Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺.✊

    After AAA bought them out they made a slightly different gun in Tasmania. It had roll pin on upper lower join. Sadly, it wore the lower away if you removed it lots.
    Only other issue was spring on cocking lever. If you locked weapon open by that for prolonged inspection on range to clear it, the spring became compressed.
    A lot of the later versions showed up in Solomon Islands and Bouganville Island conflicts to. Ran fine in the jungle, and they ran fine in temperate regions and out the back of Hay NSW in all but desert environment lots od sand red dusty dirt. Great kit.

    I remember this rifle on the the 6 o’clock news here in Australia 40 years ago. When it was a contender to replace the SLRLIA1. Years later the F88 was selected and made here under license.

    When I saw this on Gunbroker, I knew I had to jump on the opportunity to own one of these given their status. I think I got it for around $1,500 which I was initially a bit hesitant on, but considering I see rifles such as the AR-180 being sold online for roughly the same price and this has infinitely more collectors' value, the doubts slipped away.
    I'm glad that I was able to own a piece of history such as this and I'm glad that you found some use for the old girl. It's important to keep the history of these more obscure designs alive to know where they came from and how they inspired designs today. I really do not see myself shooting this all too much, if something breaks then I'd be absolutely screwed.
    Thank you for the video. Loved it as usual with the rest of the content you come out with.

    Wow pretty cool from my next door folks in oz,They have had a big tradition of engineers in Australia as also here in New Zealand cause if you could not buy something you need due to being at the bottom of the world you had to manufacture it from scratch,well done .

    On my SAR, it had a charge handle retaining cut out so you could hold the breech open. Also the carry handle was done away with. A dovetail shaped scope mounting rail was welded on. This ran from the rear sight to the back of the forward polymer guard. It was manufactured in Kempton, Tasmania. Still have the manual for it. I live in Tasmania and was forced to hand it back after PA.

    Would've never thought it was made from 16 gauge steel, that's thicker than RPK receiver!

    I honestly don't understand why this hasn't been produced in 80% form. The design is perfect for it. Would be really cheap and anyone already building their own AK's already have the tools needed. Setting up the gas block to use AR15 barrels might not work.
    Now the bolt design is BRILLIANT. Something tells me that it won't shearlocking lugs like the AR15 bolt head does and the AR community should really look into adapting it.

    • @lowellhouser7731
      @lowellhouser7731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Everyone thinks that the AK is cheap to manufacture but it's really not. This thing is all right angles. Makes everything easier.

    • @Satchmoeddie
      @Satchmoeddie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lowellhouser7731 Why not just MAKE IT 100%? A think anyone with a box & pan brake, shear, a drill press and spot welder could make the receivers.

    • @lowellhouser7731
      @lowellhouser7731 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Satchmoeddie Yes, exactly. Some sort of complete parts kit with receiver flat. That way the manufacturer doesn't need to deal with all the insurance, paperwork, etc, or the added expense of assembly and could pass along the savings. It would be a cheap 5.56 to go along with the cheap AK parts-kit guns. A little niche item for hobby builders.

    The trigger and secondary sear can be replaced with AR15 parts but the pin size on the Leader is larger. I don't have the exact dimensions any more. The AR15 trigger and secondary sear can be drilled to size and re-annealed by a good gunsmith. (Proper annealing is critical.) The original Leader T2 trigger metal is soft and starts to creep and get rough after a few thousand rounds. The AR 15 trigger made it a much better shooting rifle.

  • @hendrickotto103
    @hendrickotto103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    THX Chris, the (reminds me of Sako's) triangular bolt might just provide a larger total lug bearing surface than ar-type, as well... Not a bad design with in-built first cartridge clearance.

  • @ABowlofPho
    @ABowlofPho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I dont think people are going to have as hard of a time finding one of these to own, St George Arms just announced that they will be doing a run of American made T2 rifles.

    • @Ben_not_10
      @Ben_not_10 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Um no. Heck no. $1250 for that thing and they’re only makin 250 of them. For that price for a custom built gun I can go and purchase a Fulton Armory ar 15 a2 or if I want factory, buy a colt ar15 a4. Now we’re talking if I wanted something better at the same price. The T2 is at best a novelty gun until someone puts time into modernizing it and putting into mass production in a way that gets the price lower than that of a standard m4orgery.

    • @ABowlofPho
      @ABowlofPho 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ben_not_10 Unfortunately, someone DID try making a modernized version of the T2 that was a relatively affordable price. And that was the Masterpiece Arms MPAR, which turned out to be a dumpster fire of a gun from what I've heard from a lot of people.

    • @JehanneDeLys
      @JehanneDeLys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same designer, mate! The original design of the Bushmaster M17-S was by St. George in Australia (called the ART30 for Armtech Ltd. & then sold to Bushmaster)

    • @JehanneDeLys
      @JehanneDeLys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, the Bushmaster M17-S used an 8-lug bolt & was originally designed by St. George in Australia (also with an 8-lug). The K&M Arms rifle is a derivative of the Bushmaster but uses the triangular bolt - the other firearm manufacturers who have adopted St. George's triangular bolt design are Barrett, Serbu & Benelli.

    I wouldn't call the F90 AUSTEYR dated in anyway it's a very modernized light weight weapon. Even the the "new" MARS-L used in NZ is just a repackaged AR and last I check the AUG is a newer design then the Stoner.

    • @TCFan30
      @TCFan30 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most decisions are made by seat shiners in Canberra, hence why we don't get the most optimal choices. The only main upside to using the same design is to minimise training time for troops and importation costs due to licensed manufacturing. That aside we're still waiting for a sideram replacement for the very antiquated and rather very laughable 9mm HP pistol. The top brass stated 5 years or so ago that they wouldn't approve the Glocks unless they had external safety catches fitted - this is the mentality we're dealing with here 😅🙄

    I'm not much more than a layman in firearms, but it really does seem to me that there is only three types of modern select-fire military rifles: Ones derived from the AR-18, copies or derivatives of AK-47, and AR-15s/AR-10s.
    If it ain't broke, don't fix it.. I guess...

    I have shot Caracal's pistols. PASS! IWI? Meh. The AFT takes all the fun out of the Tavor, Uzi, and pretty much everything. The Steyr AUG is still a great bullpup, but again that pesky ATF. The ATF making good guns bad and bad guns worse, since 1972., or under the ATU, making fun guns expensive since 1936.
