Finally a good Gen 3 run from a top level Pokemon runner. Gonna be a great watch! Now I hope you consider doing Gen 4, 5 or 6 some time in the future as well (if any of them present consistent skips and useful tricks). Hope to see you at AGDQ, Werster!
I think they only check for badge 6 because every other badge gets you a (normally) required HM move unlocked so there is no need to check for badge 7 for example because you (normally) need to use whirlpool in the game to progress with plot
Since this was sorta recently discovered, TAS members are trying to figure out how this works and how to make a super speedplay out of this. It may take a while.
The proceeding way for a TAS is now known : you just do the same thing, but with fewer corruptions. To obtain Ever Grande Fly Location + IFG in 1 corruption, you would need to have a Swampert / Castform with specific data. Else, it would take 2 corruptions. You can also teleport to Hall of Fame with Arbitrary code execution, but I think that catching, renaming, and obtaining a Glitch Pokemon would be a bit longer than getting through Victory Road + League with IFG. But Arbitrary code Execution hasn't been totally researched, so it may be possible to execute longer codes for a 100% run.
Well, thanks. I read and researched anything I could about Pomeg Glitch, so what I need to do now is to write all the different uses and techniques revolving around Pomeg Glitch, and there is a lot of them. (Obtaining any Pokemon; Glitch Pokemon; Glitch Moves; any Item and Glitch Items; Obtaining any Pokemon with any move and nearly perfect IVs or more than 510 EVs; viewing the content of an Egg; training an Egg; completing Pokedex quickly; beating Battle Frontier easily; unlocking Southern Island; making a speedrun; obtaining event decorations; obtaining ultra-powerful Pokeblocks; duplicating Items; cool graphical glitches; skipping parts of the story; ShinyHunting for Celebi,Mew, or other legendaries; Arbitrary code Execution; getting back to St.Anne; accessing DayCare garden; exporting all the glitch stuff to 4th and 5th gen). New little uses may be found, but these are the main applications of Pomeg Glitch. And apart from Code Execution, everything isn't really complicated or risky to perform. (There are protocols to follow, but they are the fastest and most efficient way to do things while not making unecessary or detrimental corruptions). That's why this is by far the most powerful glitch in Pokemon games. And for the writing, I also have tons of things to write for every technique, and not much free time, so I don't know when I'll be done with it.
Where do you get your Pokemon ROMs for practice and speedrunning? Coolrom appears to have dropped its Pokemon downloadable ROMs, so do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
The rom i downloaded, and works, was one by Trashman or something, but really you can just look up other TH-cam videos on what to download and it'll most likely work
There are, but they are a bit far away from the route than the others. Also, the Ninja trainer is useful to fight since his Koffing can quickly poison Swampert in order to bring him down to 1 HP.
You need Fly to unlock Repeat Balls + catch Wingulls. Also, I'm not sure that there's a quick way allowing you to know you unlocked Ever Grande Fly Location without using Fly Map. An alternative way would take time, and this time loss + other time losses for buying items or things like this wouldn't make it viable. In TAS, it would, since you can obtain EGFL + IFG in 1/2 corruptions, but here, (check time loss)x(number of attempts) can take too much time (the time saved would be around 1 min). Thus, I would say no. (for now). EDIT : I found a quick way to know if EGFL was corrupted, so this strat might save a bit of time. It will depend on the time loss for buying stuff without Fly. (so maybe 10-20 secs max with luck)
I'm surprised that after all the setup, the skip glitches only cut 30 minutes from the final time. Granted, you need to get through 60% of the run to access the glitch, but it would have been nice to have another game where the real time record was faster than the TAS record, at least for a little while. Oh well. Hoping it somehow happens for R/B glitchless (TAS record is 1:50 with Blastoise; once someone hits 1:49 with Nidoking they'll have beaten the glitchless TAS record).
It's not only 30 minutes, but 40 minutes shaved off the glitchless speedrun. Thus, with a better start, and the same amount of luck during the glitch (or even more, with for example a better IFG), you could approach a gain of 45-50 minutes. And considering that the setup took like 15 minutes, the glitch saved 1 hour over the glitchless run (but since the preparation time is quite long, you have to deal with it).
***** Several, in sequence, but essentially it was initially the Pomeg Glitch allowing a Pokemon to reach 0 HP without fainting, thus allowing the player to have 0 active Pokemon in their party without blacking out, thus allowing the player to send out Pokemon #0 (?????????? or Decamark) in an invalid slot, thus allowing the player to scroll past the sixth slot in the party screen, thus corrupting a lot of memory and eventually enabling the player to Fly to Ever Grande City as well as have a corrupted Pokemon (Bad Egg) with a corrupted moveset, one of whose moves has a glitch effect that corrupts the battle and changes it to a wild battle (even if it was a Trainer battle), thus allowing a player to end the battle by fleeing, which the game mistakes for the player winning (as a 'Trainer' battle ended without the player blacking out).
No, you need to do the pomeg berry glitch after either hp ev training it or using a hp up, then get it to 1hp, and use a pomeg berry, which lowers the hp ev's and puts it at 0 hp. Look up the glitch, though werster explains it in this vid alright. You can flee/tail/doll/run from trainer battles after doing the glitch.
The player interacts with the guards, triggering the event at offset 0x229636. The game then show the following conversation: "Beyond this point, only those TRAINERS who have collected all the GYM BADGES are permitted to enter. TRAINER, let us confirm that you have all the GYM BADGES." The trainer did not obtain the sixth badge. The game checks if the flag 0x86C is set. As it is not, it shows the following conversation: "You haven't obtained all the BADGES. If you're bound for the POKéMON LEAGUE, you must return with them." The conversation ends, and the guard events will stay where they are, until you find the sixth badge.
***** From no site. I open the ROM with Advanced Map, got the offset of the Ever grande guard event, disassembled it with XSE, and analized it, in 5 minutes.
george franklenson Depends on Mudkip's nature, but it is pretty much impossible to find a mudkip with a perfect IVs, let alone a good nature as well. Get IV breeding, friend.
FishamanP That doesn't sound correct. He doesn't need more HP EVs in the run at all. All he needs to do is beat Winona, bring Swampert down to 1 HP, use the Pomeg on him, and pray he gets to Ever Grande. I don't see where the HP Up plays a role after he went out of his way late in the run to go get it. On a different note, would it be faster (but riskier) to have zigzagoon be poisoned instead of Swampert? You wouldn't have to reteach the HMs that way right?
It doesn't seem to be unimprovable. IFG was great but I don't think the chances to get it first time are so low. Correct me if I'm a bitch. EDIT: Ever Grande teleport was great too.
You have 11.19% chances of getting Ever Grande Fly location in 4 attempts with a reset in the middle. For IFG, you can obtain a convenient one with different ways (Water Gun and Wing Attack can each produce an IFG for example), so the chances to get a Bad Egg with one of them is high. So just consider that for Pomeg Glitch, werster had roughly 1/10 chance to be this quick (or faster). It's improvable, but lots of luck are needed.
No, but if you choose female, the rival leads with slugma, and if you choose male, the rival leads with wingull. Slugma is easier to setup on than Wingull, because wingull could ruin everything with growl.
Theoretically, yes. But it's far more boring to read "A recieved a Rare Candy," than to read "I received a Rare Candy." That's basically werster's philosophy on why he does that.
I know there was a discussion somewhere about why he picks May over Brendan, but... I frankly don't understand. Because the name is written every single time Brendan speaks, it takes 4 more letters every rival fight.
Maurice Chagall There's a lot of things I would never have noticed in many games if I had not seen speedruns of them. But hey, that's one of the reasons we watch them right?
Iirc, Brendan 3 starts with a Slugma, while May 3 starts with Wingull. Slugma is easier to set up against, since Wingull knows growl. That difference makes rival 3 a lot easier to beat.
+Javier Foo Any% is a common category where one has to complete a game to the ending, but doesn't have to collect everything (said 'thing' varies) during the run.
Why do people do Pokemon speed runs? Theres too much RNG for it to be that competitive I mean like... Random encounters and crits... number of turns a pokemon stays asleep, confusion like idk. Still fun to watch I guess
while i get that his comment is about 2 years old, the reason is that being able to react to various RNG things takes quite a bit of skill, and some people just enjoy the pain tl dr, they like it

I've been wanting to see a glitch run of this game for ages :D Awesome work!
Great job, man. You have effectively broken the game to new limits.

God, just imagine what the time could be if the run actually went really well.
Try checking for a Tas, maybe you find one of this game, and there you can see just how well exactly things could go :)

Aren't there Pomeg berries in the berry garden before the route with the long grass?
There are, but they are a bit far away from the route than the others. Also, the Ninja trainer is useful to fight since his Koffing can quickly poison Swampert in order to bring him down to 1 HP.
Perhaps there is some way of activating IFG before Winona.
You need Fly to unlock Repeat Balls + catch Wingulls. Also, I'm not sure that there's a quick way allowing you to know you unlocked Ever Grande Fly Location without using Fly Map. Pomeg Berry glitch, what he did corrupted the boxes.
I got a bad egg that made it so that i flee after i exit the fight menu :O
This vid reminds me of when I found a glitch in my fav app to cause my cats to fly.
would the soft sand on slateport beach not be worthwhile or is it too slow to be of any real benefit?

So what exactly do the guards say if you get to the Pokemon League, but don't have Badge 6?
They won't let you through?
Glitcher Red Obviously, but do they have special dialogue in case people manage to make it to E4 way before they're supposed to?
The player interacts with the guards, triggering the event at offset 0x229636. The game then show the following conversation:

Random question, what are perfect iv's on mudkip?
For any pokemon, perfect ivs are 31 on each stat.
what i mean is what do the stats look like if you have perfect IVs on your mudkip
my earlier comment may have been unclear
george franklenson Depends on Mudkip's nature, but it is pretty much impossible to find a mudkip with a perfect IVs, let alone a good nature as well. Get IV breeding, friend.
Klappa
I just can't beat May.. somebody help me ;-;
Wait why did you get the HP Up if you never use/sell it? Is it a safety strat if the pomeg fails the first time?
My guess is that it's a backup strat for if he misses some trainers (= HP EVs) or if his starter faints and misses some more EVs
Kcrackatoa Zigzagoon won't lose any HP from the Pomeg Berry because it doesn't have enough HP EVs.
FishamanP You could use the HP Up on Zigzagoon?.... (and by Zigzagoon, I mean either Zigzagoon or Poochyena, whichever he catches first)
Kcrackatoa Ah I just found out Zigz and Pooch don't learn Strength, which is required on Victory Road. They can't be used then.
Is there even a 100% speedrun of this game? My god how long would that take?
A 100% speed run would involve catching every Pokemon leveling them all up to lvl 100 beating all side missions and so on so it would take a long time
+The Pyro In Ohio Is leveling all Pokemon to 100 really part of the 100% criteria?
It's a side mission isn't it?
Shit, I missed all the emerald runs
It doesn't seem to be unimprovable. IFG was great but I don't think the chances to get it first time are so low.

Oh hey
glitch the tickets in to the game glitch what tickets
Is there any reason to pick a female trainer instead of the male? Is it just so your mom has less tiles to walk when you get the running shoes?
How? Is the team slightly different?
No, but if you choose female, the rival leads with slugma, and if you choose male, the rival leads with wingull. Slugma is easier to setup on than Wingull, because wingull could ruin everything with growl.
Can you play yellow now?
Why do you name yourself I? Why not A?
He names himself I because of lines like ''I used a potion''.
No, because A is a thicker letter than I in the chat. I can be written quicker than A and saves time.
Matthew Peeples no it doestnt. every letter of text, no matter how thick/thin needs 1 frame to display. A or I are equally fast.
What glitch did you use?
Pomeg Berry glitch.
I can't explain 100% of it.
why do you fight brawly 4th?
brawly would have been a bitch to deal with 1st, itd have been super slow and potentially fatal + its on the boat ride path back to norman
GG
can someone fully explain the ifg ??
Werster did in his video series on the subject. Search "werster glitzer hopping" and you should find it
Why did you choose "I" as your name? Wouldn't "A" be faster?
"I" is thinner than "A", which saves more time in speedruns.
If speedruns used instant text, "A" would be much faster, however.
Theoretically, yes.
But it's far more boring to read "A recieved a Rare Candy," than to read "I received a Rare Candy."
That's basically werster's philosophy on why he does that.
Who else wants to see a 'trick house rta'?
Why the girl? Does she cut time?
I know there was a discussion somewhere about why he picks May over Brendan, but... I frankly don't understand. Because the name is written every single time Brendan speaks, it takes 4 more letters every rival fight.

Holy hell. I haven't noticed that and probably wouldn't if you hadn't told me.
