  • In this video I try to give a brief overview about how Christopher Nolan shot his debut feature film "Following" on a tight budget. If you want to learn more about how he pulled this off, there is a great Vice interview with him and his Director's commentary on the Criterion edition of Following is enlightening.

Great video! There aren't many videos about his debut film, and this is one of the best I've seen so far, you've earned yourself a new sub!

Ah thanks!!! My next one will probably be about Metropolitan. It's another great indie from the 90's even if the director, Whit Stillman, isn't as well known as Nolan.

@@TheKinoCorner hey I’m not sure if you’ll see this but I left a comment on your recent video asking if you could make a video on how to analyze a film via its techniques and how we can take that analysis or\and notes and turn it into a video essay.

I mean the movie is not better than his other movies (as some people say it is) but compared to other no-budget movies, it's a great one. You can see how Nolan is trying to find his creative voice in this movie but hasn't quite nailed it yet. In his follow up movie, Memento, you can see how he was more prepared.

Great video. Lots of information I couldn’t find online. One thing I didn’t understand are the „dry takes“. So they filmed the scene with audio only and then filmed the scene again? And in the editing he added the sound only to the entire scene? What if a line or something doesn’t quite fit into the movements of the actors mouth?
And didn’t Nolan say he did sound only takes to „warm“ the actors up, but I thought he recorded them after a scene was filmed on camera?..
    Am I confusing smth..

I also felt the young man’s character arc was akin to Two Face’s. He transformed from being just an innocent shadower into a man addicted with both stalking and burgling

Can you go more in-depth on how he went about matching these dry audio takes? I'm very interested to hear about that and how that process works.

05:13 - to circumvent the permit system? can you clarify how using a certain type of camera helped them circumvent the system?

I'd imagine it's because the bolex doesn't use an external magazine and it's smaller than the arriflex, meaning it's less likely to be seen by police, and even looks like an amateur production, and so they wouldn't be asked for a permit.

If you still care: I don't know about the UK, but in Germany you are allowed to shoot on the streets, if you don't bring anything that has to "stand" on it. If you only have a camera and go handheld, you can do that - but if you have lights with stands, at dolly or really anything that needs to be set up you need a permit.
