    Thanks rob for this video. just what i needed. today i have to empty my 200 lt moving bed bio filter. im hoping i can get away with not bailing out the 100lts of K2. im thinking of blocking my drain valve at the bottom of the Moving bio filter as i havent used it in 2 yrs its been running, i figere with all the media moving it should lift the sediment anyway. your thoughts? thanks again

    I have used liquid seaweed fertilizer, Seasol, in my little system. Safe for the fish and the plants loved it!

      Have used it here as well. I now use a powdered kelp as it has a bit more potassium from what I have seen.
      Cheers Kristal & happy growing. 🌱🌱🍅

    Should the hole saw be one size smaller?

    I'm currently attempting to do the same. I'm dosing the same thing I feed my planted aquariums. Look up ei dosing. It's just adding the pure H2So4 so idk about organic but it's not impure or harmful to the fish.

      Cheers for that. I think most of the nutrients needed will be in the Charlie Carp but am open to other suggestions.

    Add a couple of goldfish to the sump tank I did that when I took my tank offline goldfish have been living in there for 2 years now they might get fed once a week and they're doing fine eating the algae, the sump tank is a little bit sun exposed, but it's just enough to keep the whole system ticking over

      That thought has crossed my mind as well Nathan. Will only be fishless for a few months at the most so might just stick with the emulsion.
      Cheers mate

    Did you run out of bubble gum and baling wire again, Rob? Are those seals silicone compatible. A quick bead around may just do the trick.

      😄Yep 😞
      I don't like to use the silicone on joints where there's movement. Have found that it doesn't hold on to well to the plastics under stress.
      Cheers Harry & have a top one sir.

    Hello Rob how's it going ? My name is Gabriel. And I have been a big fan of you for a long time. And now I see you have the "black turmeric" or curcuma caesia. I have been growing this type of turmeric for a long time now. But I only found information on how to use as a medicine. Would you be able to tell me if I can eat it ??? I am Chef here in Brazil. And I plant a lot of different types of weird plants. Cos I love it. And I really would like to eat my black turmeric. But I do not know if it is safe! I have used in many other ways. To cure migraines are the "bomb". If you can answer me that I would be more than happy. Thanks for teaching me so much! I admire you! Keep doing what you're doing. YF. Gabriel Flores

      Hi Gabriel.
      I don't know a great deal about it myself only that it is used as a medicinal & not a culinary plant due to it's bitter flavour. I think I'll be using it for my own & our dogs joint issues but may add some to meals depending on what I think of the flavour.
      Sorry I don't k=have a lot of information to share with you about it.
      Cheers.

    Uniseal vs Bulkhead fitting for quality / robustness? You can buy them at a very similar price, so...

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I worked it out for a chap this morning Steve.
      For a bulkhead & screw fittings it cost $17+ & uniseal $4.45 here in Australia.
      I haven't had any uniseals fail that have been installed correctly & have had no reports of failure from folks I've dealt with. This is a fix for a dodgy drilled hole as I mentioned in the clip. 😉
      Basically folks need to do what you think works best for them & their fish.
      Cheers.

      Would be interesting to know how low you could get the cost down buying BULK bulkhead fittings lol

      Quite a bit if I wanted to re sell them but a bit hard for someone that just needs 1 or 2.

      @@RobsAquaponics how to install correctly Uniseal?

  • @augggie

    Why would you use UniSeals if you can reach in you container to use a nut?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because they work well if installed properly. 😉

    I’ve tried this 4-5 times on a 1/2 inch size uniseal and it leaks more with the Teflon tape?? Not sure why these things leak. Drilled backwards with the hole saw, cleaned it up nice and carefully; they just keep dripping. Wouldn’t typically be too concerned as it’s not a crazy leak, but the system I’m working on is inside.

      Whats the OD of the pipe you're using in it AA?

    • @AbosoluteAltitudes
      @AbosoluteAltitudes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s schedule 40 pvc so should be .840 inches.is there something better? Just trying to add a swirl filter to my small indoor system.

      Could it be possible for something to be too thin of a material to use s uniseal? Or does the curved surface make a big difference? I’m using a 5g bucket

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The curve of a bucket would be fine for a uniseal of that size & 0.84" is the right size for the ½" uniseal. 👍
      I have used them in a few thin walled buckets & found they work fine for a while but nearly always end up splitting around the hole after a few months.
      Only think I can think of is if there was a small nick in the plastic it may of expanded with the pressure of the rubber forcing outwards AA.
      Sorry to hear it's being a pain in the rear mate.

    • @AbosoluteAltitudes
      @AbosoluteAltitudes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, was just seeking a solution. I did split my bucket messing with it, so maybe I’ll pick up a new bucket and try it again. Thanks for the tips, tricks, and the walk through of your systems. It has been very helpful in getting me started!

    why don" you use silastic, it works in wet and can hold a 2 metre head of water pressure , i have stopped rusty leaking tanks that way.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found that it doesn't always seal well on HDPE plastic. Using the tape allows for more flexibility when putting the pump on & off.
      Cheers

    Why not use food and fish safe silicone

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As these 2 valves are connected to frequently I don't think the silicone would last that long Jessie. All the other uniseals I've had to do the same fix on that just have a pipe running through them are all fine BTW. 👍
      Cheers

    go up to the next size hole/uniseal....

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again Jeff. 😉
      No need to as this filter will be comming out & don't see the point in the extra expense. Have had no issues with the uniseals in any of the other holes that were stretched, only ones that get pumps or hoses connected and disconnect to them frequently.
      Since replying to your other post I had a mate recommend silicone tape & by the look of it it's a lot more durable than the Teflon so will try that on the next one I fix.
      Cheers mate
