  • If anyone ever looked like a sprint-car driver it was Sammy Sessions.
A raw-boned native of Michigan with a flat-top haircut and a nose for adventure, Sessions started out in stock cars and supermodifieds before heading for USAC in the mid-60s.
He was instantly successful in that rough-and-tumble era and his prowess on dirt and pavement earned him a ride for Indianapolis. Sessions qualified for six consecutive Indy 500s (1968-73), where he finished fourth in 1972, and his final start came in 1975.
The USAC sprint champ in 1972, Sammy raced snowmobiles in the winter to make ends meet and he lost his life on one in 1977 where it was believed he suffered a heart attack before crashing.

Sam grew up with my dad. I remember my dad being really messed up, when he died. RIP big man!

I remember Sammy very well. You are right Robin in that he was a very shy individual but boy could he drive a sprinter! He was smooth at the Speedway and I remember when he garnered a fourth place finish for Gene White in 1972. Lloyd Ruby and Cale Yarborough also finished in the top ten for Gene White's team and so what a fantastic year it was for them.

At the time he died they always said because of a snowmobile race crash, I never knew it was a heart attack during that race, RIP Sammy

Nice story; hey Robin, how about one on Danny Ongias? He has such a wild background and drove everything.

Honest question here... I’m a Hoosier my entire life and watched midgets & sprints growing up...
Why is there such a disconnect between the 500, IMS, and racing between SW Indiana and central Indiana?
