  • A short documentary comparing two very different composers from the 1960's namely Dudley Moore and Peter Maxwell Davies -
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies CH CBE 1934 - 2016. An English composer and conductor, who in 2004 was made Master of the Queen's Music.
As a student at both the University of Manchester and the Royal Manchester College of Music, Davies formed a group dedicated to contemporary music called the New Music Manchester with fellow students Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon. Davies's compositions include eight works for the stage-from the monodrama Eight Songs for a Mad King, which shocked the audience in 1969, to Kommilitonen!, first performed in 2011-and ten symphonies, written between 1973 and 2013.
As a conductor, Davies was artistic director of the Dartington International Summer School from 1979 to 1984 and associate conductor/composer with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1992 to 2002, holding the latter position with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as well.
Dudley Stuart John Moore CBE. 1935 - 2002. An English actor, comedian, musician and composer. Moore first came to prominence in the UK as a leading figure in the British satire boom of the 1960s. He was one of the four writer-performers in the comedy revue Beyond the Fringe from 1960 that created a boom in satirical comedy, and with one member of that team, Peter Cook, collaborated on the BBC television series Not Only... But Also. The double act worked on other projects until the mid-1970s, by which time Moore had settled in Los Angeles to concentrate on his film acting.

A look back to 1960's London and the early life of Dudley Moore as a jobbing musician performing nightly in various jazz and cabaret clubs while living in a cluttered tiny flat like an impoverished student. His rise to fame came with Beyond the Fringe and the subsequent television success of 'Not Only ... But Also' with Peter Cook. The film includes an eclectic mix of Dudley's amazing musicianship combined with his wicked sense of humour.

A modest, likable musical & multi-talented master indeed.

Film made in 1961. The first musical example from Dudley Moore was used as the sig tune for the long running Radio 4 series Quote Unquote and is entitled "Dudley's Dell"

Thank you for this informative comment. Yes, I used to listen to Quote Unquote back in the days we had better on-air radio content, but never realized that sig' was 'Dudley's Dell' x

@@feline1104 It was issued on a Decca single in 1966, and has been reissued just once on a deleted CD (Harkit Records no longer exists due to the death of it's owner a few years ago). The rest of the trio were the late Pete McGurk on bass and Chris Karan (drums), happily still with us at 85. Here it is in full: th-cam.com/video/0q1471UflmQ/w-d-xo.html
