Hi, there is a thin wire in the middle of the street which lead a small magnet under the front of every car. The car itself includes the battery, engine and the processor. Each car includes front lights, back lights and of course for a fire truck - lots of flashing lights. The sound you can hear is not from the cars but from different speakers under the layout which knows what car makes what different sound. If the battery of a car is low, it drives to a charging station under the layout. The mirrors of each car are curved wires and the contacts for the battery.
The German producer 'FALLER' was the first (or one of the firsts?) developer of the 'Car System'. The guys of 'Miniatur Wunderland' perfect this invention. Search for 'FALLER car system' and you'll find trucks and accessories to build it at home. Good luck. :-)
