I’ve played the snare drum in the New Orleans area since 8th grade, 1981, and it truly is the pulse. So many tones, so many possibilities, so much room for individual expression, so many ways to propel the band and the people. I’ll play mine this afternoon and I’ll love it with the same intensity as when they gave me my first one at Band Camp.
for those saying that he played it too much like a march...its supposed to be like that! The point of second line was to emulate the snare drummer who used to play with the marching parade in new orleans!
That may be, but his groove is all wrong. 2nd line is a shuffle/hip-hop feel that is often explained as "playing between the cracks"! Check out Johnny Vidacovich and Mark Lanter and you'll see what I mean. (And I love Purdie)
Bernard Purdie What can you say that hasn't been said before? Class Dynamics Tasty above all interesting. He has it and he has it together. Why is it I can listen to this man play a drum solo and never get tired of him????? He has what it takes to make you want to dig drums. So Bernard Purdie is more than just great He is the drummer you can not get enough of??? Second Helping of Bernard Purdie Please???
Ray, I was so impressed by how you described Bernard that I contacted him this evening and quoted your comment to him. His reply was "What beautiful words" Thank you! I know he appreciated your thoughts. Thanks
I love listening to B.P. Try to explain how it works. The rhythm, the pulse, the heartbeat of whatever he is demonstrating on these videos. He makes it sound so simple, and then you listen, and it's like a fractal unfolding across time. Tight and boundless and dimensional at the same time.
Bernard was drummer on the studio version of the McCoys hit Hang on Sloopy--legend has it that he actually played the song with one hand to get a more "garage band feel"..mission accomplished
everything you say here man is so right on! I took a basic second line and added in shadow stroking, taps, ghost notes, double open hat time stuff...really cool. took a while to get it perfected...but oh my god does it fit when theres room!
Hey Enforcer, a couple of reasons. You're right about getting a different sound. The back end of the stick produces a fatter sound and since he has such great control, it's not heavier, just fatter. The other reason he told me was that he feels a balance in weight. The left hand is doing less detailed work and he uses the extra weight on the snare while the tip is doing its thing on the cymbals. Thanks for the question
*New Orleans is the birthplace of Syncopation* , period. Listen to Vidacovich lesson and research of scholar Alexander Stewart "Funky Drummer: New Orleans, James Brown and the transformation of rhythm in American popular music" .
Mr. Purdie is a great player, especially soul and funk, but this ain't New Orleans Second Line drumming. Not even close. Sorry. I'm from New Orleans, playing drums for over 50 years and this just isn't it. You need to listen to Herlin Riley, Zig Modeliste, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore or Rick Sebastian, and other native players to hear what second line drumming really sounds like. Zoro is a drummer who plays a great second line groove who I don't think is a New Orleans native, but definitely got the groove correct. There are some subtleties in second line style that make a huge difference in the sound. You will know a great second line drumming when you hear it.
No Fweddy, it ain't the 2nd line beat in a NOLA/Vidacovich/Sebastian style - it is apparently an element or count, a technical exercise Purdie is demonstrating. I don't know the context in which he is demonstrating the piece "on-offer"- clearly in isn't like the others. We don't know why he is doing what he is doing because we listen to it without context. If not, what are the alternatives regarding Mr. Purdie's performance? What do we believe to be true? That Purdie is incapable in some sense? That he can't tell the difference? Perhaps you wish to suggest that Bernard Purdie can't play a traditional trap drum NOLA 2nd line-beat ? Do you really want argue that position out - or perhaps concede that the assertion was ill considered. I'm not rabid about this y'know - but as bloated as his ego is, Bernard does, very obviously, have one of the most illustrious recording careers in the history of recorded music behind him. What choo got?
I really don’t understand this. A well-crafted pop version of traditional NO second line drumming would be something like Richie Hayward in “Fat Man in the Bathtub”. Sometimes Bernard acts so wierd and opinionated and is just off the mark. That being said, he’s still an incredible drummer

Great perspective. I like it!
lightest touch, heavy groove. The perfect balance. Long life to this legend, Mr.Preety Purdie.
Dig those cowboy boots!!! Great sound as always. 🥁
Makes it look so easy. Greatness.
Bruh, this man is BARELY fucking moving hands and touching the snare. Absolute class and style

+drumsticknow mark latner plays it stiff as fuck.
No, no, no............YOU check out Derrick Tabb of Rebirth brass band, HE'S the 'King' of New Orleans brass band secondline snare drumming!
You're delusional, dude.

The guy has his own shuffle. That’s as cool as you can get.
Loved this drummer!

Rudiments simple, not mysterious not unbelievable.
Man this guy just ooozzez coolness
A suit with boots and pure rhythm
Gracias Dan K! Bernard will enjoy your comment :)

If possible I would like to vote Bernard Perdie drum major of the world!😃😄
Bernie is to the pocket as Luke Skywalker is to the death star trench
A drumset interpretation of New Orleans Street Parade rhythms (second line).
Thanks for this!
The GOAT 🥁
Who s the drummer that played in the series, Babylon-Berlin at the jazz club.
My favorite part of this video, outside of the drumming, is Purdie wearing cowboy boots while wearing a suit 😂😂
This is the groove master
freakin cowboy boots....what!

Amazing!!! But what is going on with his tie?
あなたすごいですね!
Why is he holding the drum stick backwards in his left hand? Is that to achieve a different type of sound?

PRETTY BOY PURDIE
Snare is tight

Good Lord, it's a blessing my parents are deader than Buddy Holly and I live alone - because I love just ripping these up.
Surely this is the only black dude to ever wear cowboy boots by choice.

You OBVIOUSLY left out Derrick Tabb, the Grammy winning snare drummer for New Orleans Rebirth brass band! ⚜️⚜️⚜️
PURDIE F#@KN RULES
mmm!..think Steve Gadd has the edge, but they are all a means to an end.
Look at this ridiculous cowboy boots. lol lol Yeaaaaaa haaaaaaaaa
Если не не вижу левой классической руки это не ударник.
If you want to hear how ‘second line’ is supposed to sound take a listen to Johnny Vadacovitch. As much as I admire Mr Purdie this is not it at all.
Umm..there are many variations of second line, ya know.
I really don’t understand this. A well-crafted pop version of traditional NO second line drumming would be something like Richie Hayward in “Fat Man in the Bathtub”. Sometimes Bernard acts so wierd and opinionated and is just off the mark. That being said, he’s still an incredible drummer
So much of this stuff isn't hard, but you still might not sound great or even good playing it.
NOLA beat is much looser than this. If Purdie had a few belts he could nail it. :)
