People need to use caution and do a lot of research for 'after market' intake manifold torque specs to a 4.3. My model year is 1998 and my bolts are vertical and my bolts are different than the ones shown in this video. My torque specs for my 8 bolts are as follows> FIRST PASS 3 NM>>SECOND PASS 12 NM>> THIRD PASS 15 NM or 11 FOOT POUNDS !!! To many sites I'm seeing that folks are complaining of broken bolts during torquing!!!!!! BOLT SIZES ARE DIFFERENT! I've read that intake gaskets were made to accept the lower torque values. That is why they use a rubber gasket insert on these gaskets. But, knowing me, I will usually gamble on going an extra ft. lb. or two for good measure!! Use Aviation thread sealant on your bolts because they do go all the way through to the oil areas. It wouldn't hurt to put a dab under the head of the bolt to get the bolts to turn truer without binding and throwing your torque off.
Levi Perry Overall, the 4.3 is a solid engine. A 4.3 is a 5.7 (350) with two cylinders chopped off. The bore and stroke is the same on both. The earlier 4.3 with a throttle body injection (same as mine), has some issues with sensors and EGR etc. but later years with the spider injection are more reliable and even better with a multi-port injection. My opinion, 4.3 is good, solid and reliable but not the best thing for fuel mileage. Still considering, it is a big V6, mileage is really not bad, considering.

never use emery cloth or sandpaper to clean the surface it takes off more than you think. dont use the gasket removl pads for die grinders either. ive had to take .020 off of cast iron heads because people used them. use a wire brush in a dremel. a finer wired one or a piece of scotch brite by hand. the holes on a sbc are plugged in the front to route coolant to the rear of the engine otherwise it will only circulate i the front of the motor due to where the thermostat housing is.
Never sand on aluminum with Emory cloth. Always use aluminum oxide sandpaper to avoid causing Galvanic corrosion. Emory cloth is for use on Iron/steel only. Also, aluminum is soft so always use a small piece of wood for a sanding block to maintain flatness. Wow, you don't know much about torquing. Anyone doing this, use the specified torque sequence for your year and type motor, there are differences, even between 4.3's. Don't swing away with a torque wrench, slow and steady pull is necessary to get accurate torque. Get the right specs/manual and follow it. This is not the place to wing it. Also, plumbing thread paste is generally not for high temp uses. Use only automotive engineered sealants, anti-seize, thread lockers as needed.
@@x-man5056 Thanks for your comment. I have always used emery cloth to prep most any surface. I might need to reconsider this and yes, I should use something to keep the surface flat but I did mention that I was not using a lot of pressure when sanding.
Great job on the rod bearing replacement in your previous video. I would have changed the mains also though. On the intake video placing thread lock on the bolts is BAD. When you compress water or oil or any substance in a bolt hole it has to go somewhere and if it doesn't it will CRACK cast iron or any metal (engineer here). And even though I do not know what the exact torque is on the intake bolts I know by watching the video that they are TOO tight. I am a metals engineer as well as 44 yrs mechanic
If I were putting this into something newer, I probably would have change the mains too. I'm not using thread lock on the intake. It is a sealer to prevent leaking from the bolt holes.
I don't believe that you are who you say, first it's call a hydraulic lock and 2nd there is room enough for "some" sealer and in many application you DO need to put some sealer.Oh and the right torque is 35 ft-lbs ... make your research before you complain, your post will bring peoples in a wrong information.
For some reason, the plug redirects the coolant to areas of the engine that might be prone to overheat. ot all engines use this. If they are included in a gasket set, it should have a list of years that require the plug in.
You put MPFI heads onto a TBI engine with a TBI intake it looks like? maybe i'm crazy but how in the world did you pull that one off and how much modification did it take.
+MudRFunR I have the same engine had Me scratching my head for a min I still don't know why they named everything vortec from what I understand vortex heads didn't come out till 96 so why do 88 and up have vortec on the valve covers.
+cameron jashinsky I honestly have no clue why they would call this a Vortec. At first when I bought this, I thought someone had just put Vortec valve covers on it but they are stock.
CPI engines have the same heads , that's what the little brows on the gaskets and heads are for the injectors from the spider.Also have the 12 bolt intake so the right tbi intake will bolt right on. Rated 200 HP. and 260 LB/FT torque. 208 at .050 cam factory. CPI version.
Great video. Does it matter if the blocked ports are in front of the motor? I bought the truck with water in the oil, I thought it was the head gaskets but could that be the problem.

i got one for you today i hooked up a the sensor thats in front of the engine under the water pump and when i hooked up the battery my truck started by it self what would cause this
I can't see that sensor wire being the cause of your problem. Strange thing happened to me after installing this engine. It was starting fine and all on it's own it just started to crank over. I must have moved some wires cause the small wire at the starter was touching the nut on the cable that comes from the starter. Any chance that you have a wire touching by the starter?
can i say something?i was expecting you will show how to set the torque in detail puting it in front of the camera,,,so people will see how to do it,,,not everybody is smart to do that like you ,,,,you know what i mean? just imagine someone stop to do that process,( repair the engine) because they not sure how to set the torque how should be,,,
Yes I see what you mean. At the time, I hadn't thought of showing the torque wrench setting up close. I could do a video of about this but it may only include the type of torque wrench that I use. There are many different types. I will see what I can do about making a video about this. I might be able to borrow some different types of torque wrenches for a video. I will let you know. CAUTION: Are you sure that you should be using FOOT POUNDS??? My GM/Chevy shop manual shows a sequence of 26 in-lbs,106 in-lbs, 132 in-lbs --- Not foot lbs. Using foot pounds will really do a lot of damage to an amateur mechanic's engine. Whereas 26 ft-lbs is 312 in-lbs (12 x 26 in-lbs=312 in-lbs) Please correct this youtube. In my video, I clearly mention that I researched the torque specs online. When looking them up, I found a huge variation in specs, so my decision was to go by the specs that I use on a small block which is a similar block. Again, I looked up these specs and, again, found places where it says final torque is 35 ft lbs and some that said 12 ft lbs. I feel that I made viewers fully aware of the fact that this was my choice and that I had found variations in the specs. I did everything short of telling them to look up their own specs, which I possibly should have done. This video has been posted for too long to be edited, so correcting anything is impossible.
I don't dispute your references.. I only want to make you aware of the difference between FT. LB verses IN. LB. --- BIG difference 12 in.lb = 1 ft. lb. Now let us take another look at the numbers: 35 ft, lbs. X 12 in. lbs. + 420 in. lbs. ..so to apply 35 ft. lbs. to an item that required 35 in. lbs would do so damage agree??? I'm only trying to help so don't be offended.
@@dannysmith4561 I understand what you are saying. I do know the difference between ft and inch lbs. In the video, I am purposely using 35 ft lbs. As mentioned, this block is not much different than a V8 block. 35 ft lbs is correct on a V8 block, which I am using as a reference for this block as well.

are the heads true vortec heads? I'm asking after seeing the TBI intake which was pre 96 and the 4.3 didn't have true vortec heads till 96.

Why the gasket plug that 1 coolant port? My gasket kit was not like that. 2000 4.3 vortec

I did nothing to this engine. This is the first Vortec. It's a half breed....had me confused too. This is all stock.

That looks a lot different from the Fel Pro intake manifold gasket kit I put in my 97 S10 4.3 last week
The 94 4.3L was kind of an oddball engine. It was the first Vortec but much different from later years.

How hard is it to put a 94 Vortec motor into my 92 S10 which has a TBI?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I do remember that the knock sensors were in different locations.
got a question if you dropped something down the intake from the top of the fuel injection spider is would it just blow out the tale pipe
only if it makes it past the valves without getting cought and causing damage.

I don't know that answer, sorry. Have you tried wikepedia? Sometimes it will give you an better idea of how long a certain style or model was built.

I end up using scuff pads or the green ones for dishes w e. Cleaner vs the scraper and it dryes fast . Kinda wet sanding a car LoL in my case ,
