Car Type: New York City Subway R142, R160 (R160A, R160B)
(All files in this video are from R160A.)
    Traction: Alstom ONIX 2-Level IGBT-VVVF
    PWM Pattern: Asynchronous
    (380 Hz → 665 Hz → 1290 Hz) → (1430 Hz ⇔ 1235 Hz)
    Sound Characteristics:
At least in the speed range I recorded, asynchronous PWM is used all the time. The carrier frequency changes like 380 Hz → 665 Hz → 1290 Hz in the beginning, and after that it switches between 1430 Hz ⇔ 1235 Hz according to the train speed.
When decelerating, this pattern is turned upside down. However, since it switches to the air brake completely before stopping, the sound of 380 Hz cannot be heard so often (this case is shown in the second file in this video).
Similar Alstom IGBT traction, whose carrier frequency changes discretely during the asynchronous PWM, is used for the Washington Metro 2000/3000/6000 series and the Walsaw Metro Metropolis fleets (Walsaw cars also seem to have similar frequency values).
I wonder why this pattern is adopted, and still have no idea what happens in the higher speed range.
The AC traction PWM sound shown in this video is recorded by a sensor which is placed on the floor of a train car near its traction motor. This sensor is made by myself just using a 100mH inductor.
Due to the resolution of the spectrogram software, the frequency displayed in this video may include some error. Thank you for your understanding.
This sound is recorded in March 2019.
I wish the day to record this crazy sound will come again.
Sorry, I am NOT taking requests for recordings.

When I remeasured the part marked 1235 Hz in the video, it seemed to be about 1240 Hz to 1245 Hz.
    動画内で1235Hzと記した箇所について、もう一度測定し直したところ1240Hz~1245Hz程度のようでした。

1240-1245Hz didn't work for me on OTOTETSU; too high pitched. So I think 1235 Hz is actually right.

I always thought these VF drives sounded so weird... I couldn't understand why they seemed to jump around between pitches, and I've never heard anything like that before! It would be cool to do the VF drive on the R160 with the Siemens propulsion - that one sounds more like a traditional IGBT drive. Cool video!

Thanks! I still don't have any idea why Alstom set these values for the carrier freq. of this train.

it also seems odd that the pulse mode is 100% asynchronous, could the frequency jumps have something to do with avoiding resonance/emi? also i'm sure if we knew the properties of the traction motors it would make more sense. i love this pattern though, and wish we had more information on it

This seems to be characteristic of Alstom drives of this period. The DC metro has a similar sound with their Alstom drives.

Ha ha Warsaw metro Alstom metropolis 98B also has those same motors. Those trains were being designed at the same time as the R142 was being developed. A variant of those traction motors was later developed for use on the 6000 series trains of the Washington metro, which are set to be retired once the 8000 series trains are delivered.

Can you actually do a recording with the inductor directly off an R142 please? While the R160A and R142 sound similar, there are some noticeable differences with how long the 1,290, 1,430 and 1,235Hz sound is on the R142 compared to the R160A and I think that’s worth noting in a future video

    • @ebaraexpress7260
      @ebaraexpress7260  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I also have R142 recordings, but the switching timing of 1290→1430Hz and 1430Hz→1235Hz (which in the 1st time they appear in the lower speed) are same as R160, regarding the inverter output frequency. However, one file I have had a different behavior; it seems like when the acceleration is low and there are several interruptions (coasting) occuring in the 1290Hz phase, this phase is extended for a higher speed range and skips the 1st 1430Hz and 1235Hz phase. Thanks for the suggestion that let me look back my data!

The trains in Warsaw have the air brake triggered at 1290 Hz, not 665 Hz as in New York. The motor deceleration sound goes to 600 Hz.

That's because the sound caused by the PWM is almost erased by the motor's roaring sound in the higher speed range.
However, if you record them by using an inductor, you can get this full PWM sound.

I wonder why the carrier frequency does change so slowly. A technique which can help a lot to lower percieved noise is to change the carrier frequency a lot of times per second between two frequencies located in a different third of octave, in such a way the human hearing cannot "tune" on it which lowers the disconfort. However, doing it once every few seconds does not have any interest IMO. Would someone know what is the reason behind this solution ?
