From Marilyn in England Thankyou SO much for your excellent and very friendly video introducing me to the Mahl stick. I am a painter and have developed quite a tremor in my hands which has really been upsetting me. I am so looking forward to using the Mahl stick, you have saved me from much unhappiness!
Pain and simple, very easy to follow. Never learned about a Mahl stick until Jan 3, 2021 with an Artist zoom get-to-gather. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
This is so frustrating. I took several art classes when I was young and nobody ever told me about this tool. Unfortunately I have essential tremors and have always had an unsteady hand. Now I'm getting into painting as an older woman (getting stubborn in my old age) and here I find out that I've never had to have a surgeon's hand. smh Sincerely, thank you for this tip.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Oh, I will! You aren't going to believe this, but just about an hour ago I stumbled across a piece of suede in my stash to use for my stick. AND I sent my kid your video to convince her to try drawing and painting this evening. She has essential tremors, but now she's considering making at attempt. For a disabled person, that's a leap! Thank you for sharing. It makes a difference in people's lives.
I have been using an old steel telescoping car antenna for portrait work for many years now. In the shortest position, it lays conveniently on the bottom easel support when not in use, and, of course is adjustable to lay the skinny end over the edge of the canvas. It does bend a little but that has never bothered me because It provides plenty of support. I saw one artist on TH-cam using a walking cane. He hung the top curve over the top edge of his canvas. thought that was pretty cool, but I haven't tried it yet.
Thanks for sharing your car antenna idea, James. We'll all be heading out to the salvage lots. Richard Schmid is the artist who uses a walking cane as his mahl stick. Others imitate him on that, but as far as I know, it was his original idea.
+In the Studio Art Instruction. You're welcome. I hope you can find a steel antenna, I can't remember when I last saw one in my driveway ... : ) A tip if you do, however. The end you hold could be sharp. What I did was to file it a little and install a rubber cap on it.
+In the Studio Art Instruction PS, I just watched you're video again and noticed how you use you're store bought Mahl Stick. I like the way you have set up you're palette to rest it on, and using it to draw straight lines when needed. The car antenna won't work for drawing straight lines......... : (
Thank you for the tip^-^/ I just didn't know how to even begin 😅😅 Awesome video it was really helpful and gave me ideas for a pencil mahl stick thing😁👍

Thanks for that little insight. Funny how words evolve and take on various spellings. There is a less common spelling, too--maulstick. The spelling we use is the one that has become most common in the art world.
You’re a lovely person, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
I have been painting for years, and never learned about a mahl stick or knew what one was. WOW! Very helpful, thanks so much! xo
It's a pleasure.
I love your explanation! Very comforting to see how simple this is. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Have fun with it.
Wow! They should teach this in class! Never heard of this stick! It seems to be extremely helpful indeed! Thank you!
Julie, it's a fabulous tool and has been used by painters for centuries.

Wonderful!
You have demonstrated how to use this very clearly. ...Thank you!!!
Very insightful, for some reason I had overlooked this tool all my life. Thank you!
😊

Try a mahl stick. I think you will find it a wonderful tool.
Thank you, Dianne. I've enjoyed your videos beyond description. I've seen a mahl stick with a metal hook in the end of a flat 1" thick piece of wood.
Yeah, there are multiple variations on the mahl stick. Richard Schmid uses a walking cane.
Thank you! What a great idea. I wish I had one years ago. Going to buy or make one soon hopefully 🙂
Just about any kind of stick will do. Richard Schmid uses a walking cane.
Thank you for showing us how to use a mahl stick and give us tips on making one ourselves. 👩🎨 🌻
You’re welcome 😊

Fantastic!!! I didn't know about this! Oh goodness this is going to help me so much! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Yes ma'am thank you very nice demonstration.
My pleasure 😊
I forget what size dowel but I use the rubber pieces used on canes or crutches. 5/8 or 3/4 I believe. I'm not a real painter. But I like to try...lol
The size of the dowel doesn't matter so much as that it is sturdy.
You are SO cute! Thank you for demonstrating and explaining the mahl stick so well! Now I feel like I can move forward! 🤩
Thanks, Roger. Enjoy your mahl stick.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ll have to get one of these for sure.
You can actually make one.
This would be get for sketching as well! I always end up smudging the graphite with my hand
You are right. Thanks for adding that.
Thank you, and your apple painting is lovely!
Thanks!
Excellent 👍💕. Thank you!!
Our pleasure!
You are really the best! Many thanks
Thanks. My pleasure.
If you're painting right now and don't have a mahl stick try using your longest paintbrush if you're working on a small enough canvas!
Good tip. Thanks.
Wonderful explanation
Thank you.

Superb video
Thanks.
Thanks! I was wondering what the heck these were called 😆
Now you know 😆!
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction and now I was able to buy one Dianne. I guess I could have made one, but found a good deal for a nice wood one.
Lovely! Thank you :)
Thanks! My pleasure.
Je viens de vous découvrir, je vous adore. J'apprend beaucoup de chose même si je suis francophone
Je t'en prie. Je suis content que tu ai es trouvé ma chaîne.
Great and a DYOT too. Thanks
😊
Hi, it is not very important, but: The word stems from the German word "Malstock" (painting stick), so there is no "h" in it.
Thanks for that little insight. Funny how words evolve and take on various spellings. There is a less common spelling, too--maulstick. The spelling we use is the one that has become most common in the art world.
Just use a telescopic fishing rod from yardsale.
That, too!
Round walking cane is where it's at
😊
Check out a small Rubber Ball, I use mine for lettering
Mmmmmmm.
