    I love pineapple sage! Fungus gnats went crazy in the pot I brought in this winter, so I will have to buy it again. It is for sure one of my favorites!

    Wonderful beautiful plant, love to smell it, love the flowers, use it in tea. Gets huge in the garden. I grow it as an ornamental alongside my other flowers, but it is an annual for me in 6a. Deer don’t bother it here. I am going to dry the leaves in my dehydrator along with my stevia and try to take cuttings indoors for winter.

      Diane Prostko that is so great. My pineapple sage has come back from roots every year and it’s been trough weekly frozen ground with feet of snow. Pretty amazing. I’ve heard stevia comes back from roots too. I’d love to test this theory as I’ve killed mine every time I try to over winter it.

      Sarah msglato topa that is so amazing. I’ve split my plants up this year since moving it from this pot. I love how it comes back from the roots and I love that it’s so easy to propagate. It’s one of my favorite herbs in my garden and I’m so glad I’ve leaned about it.

      @@TheGardeningArtist yes it is started with one small plant I have a whole trailer now. I used an old trailer (flatbed) I had my husband turn it into a herb bed, filled it with soil and I have a Bed full of mint and pineapple sage. I let it just take over.

    I just bought 2 plants this year because I loved the taste of the leaves! Thought it would be great in salads, in pork chop dishes or chicken.
    Just discovered it grows very quickly with gorgeous red blooms all summer, Can’t wait! I just dead headed it so I could use tomorrow in my salad.
    I was growing it for container, but I will transplant it in my prayer garden and wait for the hummingbirds to come!
    I did think it was crazy when you said they have done experiments on mice for medicinal purposes. Like how do they know a mouse has anxiety or depression? Lol 😂

      Kathy la Dow I know it think it’s funny too. But I feel bad for animals that they test. Perhaps they monitor them and create horrible living situations for them to get an idea of depression from them.

    I bought this on sale and liked it so much I brought the pot in my garage and trimmed it all the way down in the winter. My garage stays above 50 and its already about 12 inches and healthy. I'm hoping to find a sunny wind protected spot to put in the ground here in Chicago and hope it comes back every year. I clipped some branches off and they're rooting in water nicely so I hope to have a backup to keep in a pot incase the outdoor in ground one doesn't tolerate the winter.

      In very cold regions it would be a great idea to plant near your house for warmth and mulch it during the winter months. It doesn’t get as cold where I live compared to where you live so I’m not sure if the roots will survive. It may be a good idea to give it a shot next year but also take some cuttings and root then as a back up to keep over winter in doors. :)

      @@TheGardeningArtist Thanks for those ideas. My yard is shield from the wind by my home. And it's a fairly steep valley that goes on for acres. I have a good spot in mind.

      I went out today and bought 4 more! I am making room for them and the hummingbirds! I am hoping a few might survive this years winter, but at $2.00 a plant it really isn't a huge concern of mine. I want all my native plants along with my Pineapple Sage ready for the summer of fun!

    I just bought this plant about a month ago (June, 2019). It is very stressed at this point and the leaves wilt with hot weather. Once I give it a good drink of water, it comes back. I'm looking to see how it fares through the winter (in Denver, Colorado) and if it flowers in Spring, 2020. We'll see...

    I already have Salvia Black Knight which grows very tall in my garden and this past season (it is winter here in Aotearoa at the moment) a deep red salvia/pineapple sage appeared. I have no idea where it came from but it was very vigorous and flowered spectacularly throughout the late summer, autumn and is still flowering during our winter, as is Black Knight. I have taken cuttings from both varieties that I intend to grow along the fenceline in the back garden to block out the neighbours, Lol, over summer. However, I was wondering, do you cut these very tall varieties of salvia down to the ground or do you give them a partial trim? They are both over six feet tall at the moment...

    • @TheGardeningArtist
      @TheGardeningArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Barohn Jarohn I cut mine all the way down to the ground and it came back from the roots after you see it here after all the leaves died from frost. It did great.

    Any tips regarding trimming and pruning? My pineapple sage grew crazily at the start of summer (southern hemisphere), the leaves are getting palm-sized and they're reaching my waist already.
    Best of luck to your gardening!

    • @TheGardeningArtist

      You can cut them back as much as you like. They will grow back more bushy each time. They grow much like other herbs and will send up new branches at each leaf node.

    Mine doesn't root as easily as you say. I've had them soaking for a week or so and some in starter mix with rooting hormone and still no roots have formed yet. I hope I can get at least one to propagate

      Poly Organza I noticed this year water didn’t work the best for me either. I ended up just putting a whole bunch of cuttings into soul to root. It’s kinda late in the season to do rooting as I did most of mine during the summer months with lots of heat to help them. I also only had flowers the first year on mine. Our area doesn’t get warm enough get the flowers. I wonder if it would do better in a greenhouse, I hope you get some to root for you.

    • @TheGardeningArtist
      @TheGardeningArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard to say for sure. My climate is much different here. You could always try mulching the ground where they grow and test to see if they come back in the spring. I know it gets very cold where you are so chances are it wouldn’t make it. But you could always give it a try.
