I just retired from the military after 25 years and now teach College. I’m floored by how weak the young men are.

I am almost 70 now, born in 1952, and and a proud Canadian. My father and uncle, who were in their early 20's at the time, volunteered to go to war with Britain in 1939. My father fought in the Italian Campaign, from North Africa to Sicily, and up through Italy to Amsterdam - he was one of those handsome soldiers on the jeeps at the Amsterdam liberation parade. He was a Radio Operator on the Front Lines, with the Scouts in the Canadian First Division. My Uncle landed on Juno Beach in Normandy, was wounded and continued to fight. They somehow survived, lived into old age and strangely talked very little about The War until they were in their 70's. Both were permanently injured, but were proud to have been able to contribute to the fight for Freedom. In the 90's me and my siblings started asking my Father and Uncle why they did not tell us about The War, what they did and saw and they reluctantly told us everything. It was horrific and shocking - not the Hollywood movies and Documentaries that we were served up. We asked why they did not tell us before and they answered that they wanted us, the next generation, to be unburdened with the horrors of the past (they also endured the Great Depression in the 30's) and to start afresh. This was an unspoken agenda by all of the Western countries, to protect us. They meant well, but had no idea that in the 1960's and beyond that the youth would become so weak and entitled as to want to destroy the foundations of the civilization that their elders fought so bravely for. Over the years I met many people in my private and professional life who fled, often with the threat of execution, from regions such as the former Soviet Union, Communist China, the Middle-East and South and Central America . Canada has been a refuge, just like the United States, for people seeking freedom. After discussing this particular issue with these grateful immigrants they all replied that we SHOULD have been told the TRUTH, not the sweet, lovely version that we were presented with to keep us innocent. They insisted that it is important to tell the real story to children no matter how terrible it is and I now agree with them. My parent's generation had noble intentions, but in the long run it left the future generations to become lazy, entitled beings who expect to live a lovely dream of being treated wonderfully. Over time this turned potentially strong people into frightened weaklings. This, to me is one key as to why we are as a society too weak to stand up to anything, no matter how ridiculous. I miss my Dad, James Curtis and my Uncle, Frank Curtis, so much, and am very proud of their courage. In a strange way I glad that they did not live to see what they fought for to become a potentially dreadful future, and with almost nobody to fight for us. By the way, I adore Trump and do not care about his abrasive personality - I worked 40+ years in Engineering and am married to an Engineer, so I understand and appreciate strong, practical men! I hope and pray that Trump can help to fix this, whatever his role. He is a fighter, in the same league as Sir Winston Churchill. Hard times bring forth strong leaders.
