Zorin does EXACTLY what Linux needs to become mainstream: to copy. It's user-friendly and visually appealing, and it meets the REAL NEEDS of ordinary users, with guided setups and simplified configurations, just as users are used to in proprietary OSs. As long as the open-source community continues to look down on anyone who values usability and accessibility with contempt and snobbery, we will remain chained to proprietary software. Kudos to Zorin

There is a lack of marketing strategy in the open source community, which doesn't even make sense to be a priority but it would be good

Linux is becoming a more competitive space now with so many different distros! As someone who uses Linux, I am glad to see that it is beginning to pick up pace.

the fine part with linux (and in the past, I thought that this is a disadvantage): the distros compete with each other. the goal is not "be better than windows". there are goals beyond that.

Great video!! Many years ago it was you who talked me into my first linux distro, Linux Mint. On my older laptops it worked flawlessly (ThinkPad T420 and T430). When my collection grew and I began to learn, you also talked me into using Zorin the first time (T440p, T460, T480, T480s and P51). Like you I cannot decide. I can however tell you that your videos have made quite an impact on the Linux journey I took. Thank You.

For me Zorin OS pulls slightly ahead because of software availability, Zorin Connect and the UI is a bit more modern. I switched from Windows to Linux Mint (17) 9 years ago for my older laptops, and couldn't have been happier. Recently, the latest versions of LM 21(Cinnamon) were sluggish and less responsive and I decided it was time to tryout a new distro. I love how beautifully polished and responsive Zorin 16.3 (Core) is, and how modern these sweet-rainbow icons look in this environment. I'm glad you added videos such as the 15 things you must do after installing Zorin OS along with your favorite applications and packages videos for other considerations. I think I'm finally ready to convert my 2011 Mac Mini over to Zorin as well, but there's one issue that I almost preventing me from taking the plunge or returning to Linux Mint: how can such a great distro such as Zorin not have the ability to copy/cut and paste? Thought it might be a file manager issue with Nautilus, so I installed Nemo but that didn't help either. I see so many users also have this issue, but no amount of research has led to fixing an issue I never thought at this point would've even ever been a concern: just something you'd expect to just work. I really love your energy, enthusiasm, humor, and wit you bring to all your videos, and look forward to taking your Linux course in the near future since I'm still just a Linux newbie even after 9 years when it comes to the system and terminal commands. Keep up the great content you provide, and thanks!

I'm glad to see this. Zorin isn't compared to Mint as much as it should.
I'm writing down my own experience on both in detail, but what I have to say here is that Zorin 16 is better in general for people coming from windows 10, and Mint from 7.
I do not advice anyone using Zorin lite, though. Unless you really want Zorin, there is very little reason to justify its existence. Mint is way better on this, and if you have an old computer you might want to avoid them both altogether and use Peppermint or even Solus Budgie.

I've been using GNU/Linux for over five years now and still use Linux Mint (both the XCFE and Cinnamon editions) every single day. I've streamlined my workflow with the necessary apps and settings, and if I ever need to try a new distribution I always stick to either the XFCE or Cinnamon desktop environment, then I can easily transfer my configuration files and get started right away. Now I can't even imagine switching to Windows for production use. The keyboard shortcuts and custom-made bash scripts are irreplaceable on Windows.

But since about two year now, Zorin is my top favorite, driving both my laptop and gaming rig. It's stable and conservative with updates. For things where I do want the latest and greatest (such as browsers, graphics card drivers, blender, ...) I add PPAs to the system. I'm also fond of the desktop. I use the dark theme, which looks fantastic and is easy on the eyes. I like that the quick launch bar is normally hidden, leaving more space on the desktop and uncluttering it.

  • @timnowak8573
    @timnowak8573 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Linux Mint is the best system for me. This is due to stability, no bug problems or various problems after system updates.
An additional advantage is the included linux mint apps, I mean. Bulky, Hypnotix, Mint Install, Mint Stick, Sticky Notes, Thingy, Warpinator, Web-App Manager etc. In addition, flatpak support has been added to the update manager. So when you update the system flatpack apps update is a big advantage.
ZorinOs, on the other hand, has the advantage that it looks very good immediately after installation. Linux mint also looks good, but not as good as Zorin. However, you can improve the look easily by changing the system theme, icons and cursors.
I completely disagree with the downside that Mint doesn't support the Snap app. I believe that Canonical is trying to force the type of applications with which there are problems. In the form of slow work, problems that they do not support the system theme, etc.
Additionally, now Canonical is blocking Flatpack support out of the box in Ubuntu and official flavors. This is a big minus for me, and a firm word no to such a policy. .By the way, they're starting to remind me of Microsoft with their recent activities, in imposing something that people don't want. For instance forcing a Microsoft Account, you won't be able to use a local account without hacks on Windows.
I have no problems with applications on Mint, I have access to a large database of applications in DEB, Flatpack and AppImage versions. This is enough for me, the only downside is the older version of the linux kernel, mesa etc. Other than that, nothing to complain about. Besides, you can always use DistroBox and use applications available for Arch or Fedora :).

@Shilpa S. Very interesting, I have not yet encountered such a problem personally. I don't know what version of Linux Mint you are using exactly, and what specs your computer has. So I can't give much advice, but I've personally been using a Firefox replacement for a long time. I use Waterfox and Floorp Browser and I'm very happy, both browsers can be downloaded as flatpack apps from flatpak hub. Both browsers are based on Firefox, but they are completely better than it. That's why I suggest you give it a try, maybe they'll be better than Firefox for you. And you won't have any problems.

I have been using Linux for about 20 years and Unix before that, so have used a lot of different desktops. For my use these are the best Linux distributions. On Mint, I had both Flatpacks and Snaps (simple to enable), but I really dislike the way Snaps complicate the management of mounted file systems, so I will be dropping Snaps as soon as practical. I installed Zorin OS Lite yesterday on an old Acer Windows Laptop. Like a breeze… BUT I don’t understand, why it’s possible to scale your screen resolution and if you accidentally do so and only see a quarter of the workspace then there’s really no viable workaround for beginners … very unfortunate glitch

go to display settings and change the resolution to 720p or 1080p depending on your hardware. otherwise everything looks too small or too big

I love your chanel and your videos. Especially this one since I'm trying to find the best Linux distro to recommend to new potential Linux users.
One recommendation I would have is to try and synchronize what you are taking about and what is being shown. It's not rare in this video (and others), to have you speak about Zorin OS while we see images of Mint, or the opposite. An example here is the "personal thoughts" section at 14:00
Like I said it is just a suggestion, and the rest is just fantastic, please keep up the good work 😁!

Been running Mint for over 6 years. Just upgraded to 21.2 and either it's buggy or I don't know what's up. I had trouble installing it on 3 computers, (and I've installed Mint on about 12) then installed 20.0 instead without issue. Also I HATE flatpaks... not only do they take up a huge amount of space but installing Brave via flatpak gave me serious computer issues, even booting problems. First thing I noticed was could not drag/drop files into my email or other online pages. As soon as I trashed the flatpaks it started working again. I will avoid them whenever I can and if a distro seem to have more and more of them I'll switch. Did a live session with Zorin no problem, the only think I don't really like is their paid arrangement for the top of the line version but I guess it's not a deal-breaker.

What a coincidence. I was in a fix which of these two to install today. I ended up burning Zorin first, but when i clicked on Try Zorin, I got a black screen. Rebooted, same result, so i later got Mint and it worked flawlessly, so i guess +1 for Mints stability?!
    My systems a Ryzen 5 3600 and RX 6650xt.

the real problem will be in approximately 2 years, when win 10 drops out of support.
    there will be 4 options:
throw your PC away: not a great one.
remain on win 10: not a great option either.
upgrade with tricks to win 11: still not a good option and it requires some skill.
switch to linux: true, not perfect, it requires some work to learn a new OS. but on the other hand: so is learning win 11 when coming from win 10 or even an earlier version. remember win 8.
so, mint or zorin, that's a really hard question. the better support of windows programs in zorin might take the cake.

I agree but not entirely. The new version of Linux Mint that is about to come out is supposed to have improved theme support, and improved themes. So things can change, Mint can be customized visually. Personally, I used the theme from Zorin Os Lite on Linux Mint XFCE version + used extra fix for flatpack, gnome4 + libedwida apps. This gives me theme consistency everywhere. Zorin OS, on the other hand, has a problem with the consistency theme of the application.

You didn't do your proper homework on Linux Mint :
It's had Warpinator for years now, which does connect your pc to phone and other devices, and Zorin Connect was derived from it. Also : Snaps (not secure, and not always FOSS), can be enabled on Linux Mint (should you really want it). All in all, Linux Mint is the most stable, and doesn't do telemetry, as Zorin (which is proprietary) does.

While i do agree that comparing and rating it will vary for different users, i believe that there should be a rating i e. one should be above. This creates some sort of competition for the one at the top to continue effort to maintain position and one at the bottom to try and catch up. Maybe there is a need to go further in depth to get a demarcation as somewhere one developer may have pour in more effort than the other

The Telemetry is optional. You can choose in the installer whether you want to take part in the census. Telemetry in general is a good thing. It means developers can collect usage data to improve the software.
That being said, I don't trust Deepin.

Zorin uses XFCE not GNOME! Also Zorin has no upgrade path. In order to upgrade between releases you have to reinstall, whereas with Linux Mint you only need to run an update script. That is why I do not run Zorin.

At the end of the day what really matters is the distro's ability to load seamless drivers for hardware, run fast, smoothly, & most of all be able to run Windows XP & Windows 7 compatible software. Countless users have a repository of Windows utilities they still need to run when necessary. This is why its important that these distro's come equip with a reliable Virtual Machine and a seamless well tested version of Wine. Which ever distro can offer these features will be the leader. The cosmetic appearance is NOT as important!
