    When I was in High School, I was a student helper for an elementary school, and was often tasked with helping tutor a young mentally disabled kid, and we bonded over wrestling. The kids absolute favorite, no joke, was Eugene. He would often do terrible impressions just like Eugene would and everything. On the last day of my student helper duties, I brought the kid a Eugene shirt and it made his day. Kid genuinely didn't see Eugene as a character that made fun of people like him, he literally looked at Eugene as a relatable hero.

    There was also an issue of Sgt. Slaughter and his promos out of the ring. He made in depth speeches about being a soldier in Vietnam, about comrades, and the loss of life. The man behind Sgt. Slaughter had never actually been a soldier and a lot of Veterans found it offensive.

      I mean.. It's acting? No different than the actors in FMJ & platoon playing Vietnam soldiers, or Tom Hanks in private Ryan. True, since it was under the guise of kayfabe it's a little more iffy but honestly I don't think it's a big deal or some stolen valor. Finding that offensive but not all the insane racial stereotypes of the time is pretty bleak for our society hahaha. Although Guerrero's white power character would probably be super over nowadays and that's kind of depressing

    Hassan was a great heel, very sympathetic during his days on RAW. Come SmackDown, it was the death knell for his character, and Capani's career. He never was able to recover career-wise, and it sucked. He was a great wrestler, and in a better storyline, could've easily been a great top heel in the WWE. Alas, that one incident killed everything he had going.

      Yep a lot of people forget about that tbh. That was one of the most controversial things about the "Sgt. Slaughter" character. Not to mention the fact that Remus tended to talk about military service while speaking out of character which is a BIG no no. People mostly think about the whole Iraqi sempathizer angle, but forget that the whole character itself caused a huge buzz in the military community and the world as a whole because of the fact that him pretending to be a Sgt. in the Marine Corps, even if it is a character. Honestly if I was WWE I would have at least went with something besides Marine Corps Sgt...I mean no military branch takes kindly to Stolen Valor, but Marines will fuck your world up for it. If I remember correctly, didn't Remus even get beaten up by real Marines for his character?

      @duogemstone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You know I would agree with the whole stolen valor thing if he wasn't always in char to some degree, I honestly can say I've never seen a interview where he's like hey I'm Rudolph Remus and I am a marine, I think theres not even a hand full of interviews where he isn't called slaughter every now and then someone might call him remus and then right back to slaughter. Quite frankly alot of old timers still somewhat keep to kayfabe for better or worse (take flair dude is broke broke but I highly doubt you'll ever see in public slumming it so to speak, or sheik who by all accounts is a great guy but you put a camera on him and he goes into heel mode on autopilot, or hogan who is pretty much always in kayfabe and many many more) so I think it's less stolen valor and more just a old man holding on to kayfabe the best he can because that's all he knows (I can almost guarantee the only people who get to see Rudolph Remus aka the real him are family and close friends)

      Just went through the first 40 or so comments down from yours and only saw one mentioning SJW's or snowflakes. Virtue signalling when there's no call for it? That's new.
      But yeah, whether it's a random TH-cam list or a wrestling storyline from 2 years ago, if you're offended, you're a snowflake. Simple.

    • @MichaelaMyers505
      @MichaelaMyers505 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is nobody here complaining about snowflakes. I mean, I see what you are TRYING to do but it's not really working. Even if there were people complaining about snowflakes it wouldn't even be comparable as their reasons for being upset are different.
      Snowflakes are upset because they think that the world revolves them and their feelings and that everyone should adhere to their strict idea of what is socially acceptable but there are no real consequences other than hurt feelings whereas those who are upset by those who are easily offended are so because there are potentially worse consequences that may affect them directly and unfairly, such as their favourite shows, music or moves being cancelled or taken away from them.
      Snowflakes have the option of simply avoiding what offends them but they so often choose not to. Nobody is forcing them to experience the things they are offended by but they are forcing everyone else who aren't offended to miss out on experiencing it. If it was the other way round that would be considered a violation on one's human rights.
      The potential consequences are essentially akin to that of an authoritarian dictatorship (See North Korea where simply making fun of their leader results in severe legal consequences). This is why Freedom of speech exists, to protect everyone and give everyone a choice in how they want to live. There is no right or wrong way to feel about a movie, music, TV show etc but there is a right and a wrong way to react to it and if it causes you to react in a way that imposes on others or infringes on their freedom or rights then you are objectively wrong.
      If your response to a joke is to be upset or offended that is your right and I will never personally tell you that you are wrong for that but if you take action to either shame those who do find it funny or go a step further and attempt to get those who laugh at the joke in legal trouble or get the source of the joke cancelled then that is different. But it certainly is not a case of both parties being "Triggered" by the other.

The only way a company can claim to be in support of persons with disabilities is if they provide work opportunities for them. All I see in Eugene's character is a mockery of real life struggles.

    Eugene actually wasn't bad, I thought it worked well, especially the buff of him having a photographic memory and being able to replicate big moves based on sight alone. Photographic Memory is an actual skill that people on the Spectrum have in some cases. though they made him a bit too awkward for my taste. And if anything, Eugene would have made a good recurring character in the video games only if all else failed due to him being a Mimic Fighter, which every good fighting game has.

  • @SeasideDetective2

    The problem with Chavo's "Kerwin White" gimmick was that, well, no one with even a fraction of a brain could possibly take it seriously. Of course, it was supposed to be funny, so there was no chance of anyone LITERALLY taking it seriously. But what I mean is that the gimmick would have been much more interesting if Chavo had made the character believable. I mean, looking at him, bleached hair or no bleached hair, that was still a Chicano. If he had affected a pitch-perfect upper-middle-class accent (which wouldn't have been impossible, since the Guerreros' real-life voices sound sufficiently American) and powdered his face to a Michael Jackson level of whiteness, the gimmick would have been a lot more bizarre, but at least it would have been different enough from the real Chavo to justify its existence. Instead, what we got was an obvious Mexican-American with dyed hair doing a voice that sounded like the stereotype of what Latin Americans apparently think "Anglo" voices sound like. "Kerwin White" came off more as a posh homosexual caricature than a white American.

On the *other* hand, I DO remember Muhammad Hassan, and my wrasslin' buddies and I looking at him and openly saying "...jesus, are they really trying to push this? Like, *now*? If WWE was around in the 40's, would they have had a rassler named 'Adam Hitlan' that threw shade at Macho Man all the time?"
    I mean, we openly ROOTED for Eugene, 'cause y'know, "He's....erm....SPECIAL. But dagnabbit, kid's got some pizazz, and knows his in-ring work, so I wanna see him succeed!" But Hussan....c'mon, man. Bridge too far, all that. "Oh, so he's....uh....goddamn, son, this is painful."
    ...
    To be fair, though, Vince *instantly* green-lit a guy who could (purportedly) vomit on-command,, not to MENTION the (supposed...?) incest angle between Steph and Shane, so....I mostly have no words to describe what he *wants* to do. Mostly just sounds. (And those sounds are eerily similar to those "on-command" vomits that Vince wanted to see, in-ring. Vince is a 14-year-old boy, in the body of a 76-year-old billionaire, PLEASE figure out how to get him to spend his billions on...less stupid stuff.)
    Gawd, Trips, save us. I don't care *what* you gotta do to bring Samoa Joe back into the fold, at LEAST for developmental and/or plots, just do it. You both see the true workers, and y'all can conVINCE (ha!) him to NOT lean into the puerlie shit. So please, go do that. Less "The Boogeyman", more "Workers that can do 20-30 minute matches with actual storytelling, without having to rely on gimmicks to sell the product".

    I remember Akeem/One Man Gang &, to be honest, I thought WWE should've stuck w/OMG. He was legit in the ring & a great heel.
    Now, full disclosure, I thought the Akeem character was more stupid than offensive. Maybe it's because I'm white. Maybe because Akeem's antics were so over-the-top bad. The bookers were at least smart enough to have him as a hopelessly terrible "African American". It's hard to hate a tone-deaf goof who spoke crappy jive & had absolutely no rhythm. But also bear in mind that it took me years to finally see the "Deepest Darkest 'African' ghetto" promo & NOW I get why folks hated the character. If the Godfather of Style WAS the idiot who pitched the gimmick, shame on him. If he was strongarmed by Vince to sell it, shame on Vince. If OMG TRULY thought this would be his ticket into the top tier, well, what can I say? He was an idiot.
